Doesn't take away from the problems of AI NOW. Elon and other AI bro boneheads like him have been poisoning small towns with their data centres, figuratively AND literally.

So in the example you provided, the area affected is in a state where the population has historically voted to have no to few environmental regulations, and already had issues with pollution before the data centers came in, since well, it industrialized. The majority (white) population has voted this way because they know these environmental harms will mostly affect working class, non-white Americans in segregated areas. But the production and harms have pre-dated AI by centuries, and the solution must encompass more than just addressing AI. It's a political and social problem.

"Construction underway for billionaire Elon Musk’s xAI supercomputer is in a predominantly Black Memphis neighborhood already affected negatively by environmental pollution. (Photo: Karen Pulfer Focht for Tennessee Lookout)"

In other jurisdictions, where environment regulations are far stricter typically these investments are (often required to be) coupled with carbon-neutral or carbon-negative initiatives (1,2.)

And these competitors are out-competing Elon, because they have what his company doesn't have - high-quality talent where as he has indentured  servants who work for him for their H1B visas.

Since we were talking about an AI produced by Google that is helping both humans and animals, let's also note that they have been pushing for efficient compute for a while. For example, it was only a few days ago that they released a paper on how to reduce memory consumption of current systems by about 6 times, something they could have guarded and kept as a competitive edge.

There is also the matter that "AI is making Renewable Energy smarter" as noted by the Reneweable Energy Institute.

"AI enhances every stage of the value chain, optimising forecasting of solar and wind output, enabling predictive maintenance to minimise downtime and enabling smart grid management to balance supply and demand efficiently"

Edit: Not sure why this post got screwed up in its formatting, but you can quote it to read it.

I read it, but it still sounds absolutely stupid. AI is destroying the economy, destroying the ecology, causing wrongful arrests, and has been used in war crimes.

Non of you who are pro-AI will sway me towards this unnecessary and heartless technology that is destroying the world as we speak.

Anyone who says AI is good for anything at all is as blind as today's CEOs.

A statement like this doesn't mean much coming from somebody who doesn't know the difference between "sentient" and "sapient" and thinks that if one believes non-human animals are "sentient" that also means they think it is okay for humans to fuck them.

No, I was inferring that you would glorify fucking animals because they're sentient. Excuse me for not knowing the difference between two words that mean basically the same thing. If we're reducing ourselves to petty accusations, then how about I accuse you and others like you of wanting the economy to crash or wanting more war crimes? After all, that's what will happen because of your precious AI.

End of discussion, now get out of my thread, and never speak to me again so I can do the same with you.

"Glorify" is an odd word, but yes I think it is ethical to value sentient life over non-sentient life (pragmatically, with some ecological limits) and non-life and it is inter-subjectively good to aim to reduce pain felt by it.

The words don't "mean basically the same thing." You still don't understand them if you think that.

I can post in a public thread. You don't own it. It's not yours. You're the one who replied to me originally, the one incapable of having a good faith conversation on this topic (across many threads, not just the one you think you own), and the one who starts throwing around inflammatory statements like "And if animals are truly sentient, what are you gonna say is ok next, bestiality?" and "I read it, but it still sounds absolutely stupid."

If you don't want me to reply, then don't reply to me then.

Saying something like that requires at best extreme ignorance over this topic or in your case extreme foolishness over it cause you have literally been shown a bunch of examples of things it's good for including earlier today yet are still saying that despite you knowing that's blatantly false. Having big problems with AI makes sense and thinking it's more bad than good is a fair position to have but the way you've been acting over this topic is ridiculous. You've clearly bought into a moral panic over it and are unable to think reasonably about it as a result.

Only stopped by to point out another argument against data centres; the noise drives away wildlife, which are already running out of places to live.

AI isn't helping animals at all, it's just helping greedy CEOs who are already overpaid, while the rest of us can't afford our own homes. This will lead to economic collapse, and it's time the predatory billionaires suffered actual consequences.
