The latter scenario is a horrible future. -_-

But one with a basis in history, for better or worse. After the Dotcom Crash a lot of people were saying how stupid it was for anyone to think that online shopping could ever match the convenience of bricks and mortar retail. It might have taken twenty years of technological advances and a factor (the COVID pandemic) that no-one could ever have predicted at the turn of the century, but it did happen in the end.

But this is worse. We're talking about maybe millions of art and animation jobs lost to soulless automation that wastes water.

I figured these videos were likely costing a fortune to make, probably even more expensive than the numbers being thrown around. Seedance will run into the same issue ... a bunch of kids making stupid meme videos is all fun and games until you're bleeding billions of dollars to handle that much complex compute/rendering.

Open AI will probably try Sora or something like it again though in the future, they are going to IPO soon and need to get their costs down otherwise the stock will struggle so this might just be temporary.

But now it's a good win for traditional animators/traditional filmmakers.

Cost billions?! But AI was supposed to save CEOs more money by cutting out artists, animators, writers, etc.

It's like saying Nintendo could save people so much money to buy more games by selling the Switch 2 for $100 ... like yeah sure, of course that would be great for the consumer who's in the market for a Switch 2.

That also means Nintendo is the one on the hook for $300 loss/system.

But I said CEOs, not customers.

Wonder if LeWM has anything to do with it. Sora was OpenAI's attempt at world modeling, but autoregressive generative models haven't shown to be as efficient/good as other architectures.

With ~15M parameters trainable on a single GPU in a few hours, LeWM plans up to 48× faster than foundation-model-based world models while remaining competitive across diverse 2D and 3D control tasks. Beyond control, we show that LeWM's latent space encodes meaningful physical structure through probing of physical quantities. Surprise evaluation confirms that the model reliably detects physically implausible events.

Good, fuck AI slop and fuck OpenAI.

why should it shut down? all that needs to be done is to sell the company and cash out from the hard work
