I loved FF16, but I wonder if Square will have the humility enough to see what this game did and perhaps change course. With that small of a budget and their resources, we could see an entire FF trilogy in a single gen again.

I'll be very blunt: Square simply doesn't have the talent to create something on the level of Expedition 33

Square has many teams capable of producing turn-based games with a budget similar to E33s. In fact, they release quite a few turn-based titles but none of them are that good. Even their HD-2D series, which I like a lot, has its issues

Octopath, for instance, has very solid tactical combat and a great job system. As far as turn-based tactical gameplay goes, it's one of the finest systems we have on the market right now... but it also suffers from a somewhat repetitive gameplay loop (and some outdated design choices, like random encounters), and it’s extremely grindy. The story is also disjointed because of the game's structure several character arcs that barely come together

Death Stranding won more GOTY awards than Sekiro?...

Edit: Interesting how Geoff Keghlely gets shat on for being a Kojima and Sony shill, when "his" awards show chose Overwatch and Sekiro over Uncharted 4 and Death Stranding (which apparently won more GOTY awards. Not surprising for Uncharted 4, but Death Stranding over the incredible Sekiro is borderline criminal). I still remember Keighley's days with Gametrailers when Sony fanboys accused him of Xbox shilling lol.

There actually is some controversy behind the 2019 through 2022 GotY counts. The original person behind counting all the GotY awards was not too happy that GoW:R was getting crushed by Elden Ring— in their eyes, as the had explicitly stated, FromSoft was overrated slop whereas Sony was the best in the business.

That all to say: If a referendum could be performed on the count for 2019 and 2020, we would very likely see (i) Sekiro win 2019, (ii) TLoU:Pt2 wouldn’t have garner nearly as many awards. Not getting into all the details as to why these results would occur…but that’s what the expectation has been.

Then maybe we shouldn't use that person's data? How come we don't have more reliable sources?

That’s the only tracker we’ve got— personally, I find the best trackers to best the ones which looks only at well-known/reputable sources. A lot of the outlets which are allowed in the count are sketchy to say the least.

In fact, Metacritic does something like this already! [Link.] Though it’s not as interesting IMO. Wikipedia also has a list of reputable outlets, though it’s not regularly updated.

Update— E33 sits at 28/34 (>80%). This is unprecedented especially for how utterly packed this year was for gaming. This may go down as one of the most impressive GotY performances of all time behind only OoT (which saw >90% of all awards in 1998, one of gaming’s strongest years).

Update on this: It seems TGA may have shot E33 in the foot. Ever since the award show, Claire Obscur has dropped from ~85% of all awards to 68%. It is now pacing well behind Elden Ring and may drop below Baldur’s Gate 3 very soon (which sat in the low-to-mid 60s% throughout December, dropping steadily during late-December & January to mid-50s% as TotK grew into mid-20s%).

Oddly, Kingdom Come Deliverance II has secured the second winningest position, raking in a lot of awards from its home country.
