This is a personal one, but this month marks 6 years since I beat cancer, and 10 years since I started work as a classroom mentor for teens with autism, which I almost gave up on before I even started cos when I tried my teaching placement back in Uni in 2012 I crashed and burned and my supervising teacher basically told me I couldn't do it.

Another work story, but there was this girl in class yesterday who wasn't really engaged and you could tell that her ADHD was making it hard for her to stay focused and care about all the personal growth/schoolwork type stuff. We put her in charge of running some of the games we do in between activities, and that extra bit of leadership and responsibility really got her engaged and much happier and enthusiastic. Was nice to see; it's a trick I learned from my own time as a student where the first teacher to really "get me" used to give me jobs and responsibilities to keep me engaged.

It's only the second week of this particular program but the kids are already coming out of their shell and making friends with each other, which is awesome.
