Forums - Sony - Sony Confirms PS5 is Most Successful PlayStation with $136B in Sales So Far

I think some of you are getting cause and effeft backwards in regards to inflation.

Yeah, Sony sits pretty late in the production chain for most of the PS stuff but still consumer electronics, before the current AI bubble, never followed overall inflation trends in terms of cost. If anything they tend do deflate pretty hard.

Except we do have enough data for unit sales and development costs. A slight increase in revenue easily deletes the rising development costs, I wrote a couple of detailed breakdowns on how dev cost vs revenue works and you seemed to agree.

A PS5 that sells a 100 million units at $500 is decidedly more popular than a PS5 that sells the same at $400. Because the extra $100 is prohibitive to a large segment of buyers. Similarly, Nintendo's games holding their prices is 100% an indicator of popularity, and is in no way "inflating revenue". Expensive consoles do not guarantee higher overall hardware revenues unless the consumer sees the value and decides to buy. PS5 selling so well at such high prices is objectively an indicator of popularity. Profitability is another story because it takes into account a crap ton of other factors, but Sony is beating their profit records as well and is stating to see huge year over year increases now that acquisitions (and Concord!) are behind them. Sony already made more profit this generation than what they made in the four previous generations combined. So the higher revenues are definitely netting them more money.

Only a compete fool would look at hardware sales alone without considering other factors. I loved my PS2, but the Playstation business today is much bigger and more successful (they're products of different eras. PS2 is indeed more impressive with its era in mind). And expensive products don't necessarily lead to higher revenues.

Are you factoring in inflation with your profits claim?

Something selling equally well at $100 more doesn't mean it's more popular. It just means that price isn't a prohibiting factor at $100 more for the majority of consumers.

PS5 would have sold a lot more if it was a $100 cheaper on average, let's stop pretending otherwise. Selling that well at its current pricing is an impressive popularity feat, especially for a console with a very few true exclusives.

The higher profits aren't "my claim" but a fact revealed by Sony. And no, none of these companies' reports take inflation into account. But someone on Reddit adjusted the numbers for inflation, and it still had the PS5 generation ahead. This is partly due to the nightmare called PS3.

If we delete PS3 from the equation and adjust for inflation, current Playstation gen would need less than a couple more years to beat previous generations combined. Playstation is bigger than ever at the moment, but I'm not a fan of Sony's decisions. I think from 2027 onwards, the brand will start trending downward and may never reach its previous peak (2026) in most relevant metrics.

Any profit from potentially interested PC gamers is offset by the loss in console sales and subsequently the loss in 3rd party software sales royalties.

That is objectively false because... There is no guarentee PC gamers would buy a Playstation console or that specific game.

Cerebralbore101 said:

Whether a game eventually comes to PC or not is irrelevant. If porting games to PC loses 10% lifetime console sales and 10% lifetime console based software revenue then porting to PC is like burning money.

This is also false. Factually.
Sony has literally just posted it's highest ever revenues and profits... And they continue to support PC.

Clearly PC isn't eroding any of Playstations profit or revenue.

With Xbox in the dumpster at sub 40 million there should be 90 million PS5 customers already. Instead those customers left the console market for PC because Sony is doing everything they can to push them to PC.

Microsoft's failures has nothing to do with PC or even arguably Sony... But rather the mismanagement of Xbox itself.

No price cuts.

Porting exclusives to PC.

Raising prices on consoles.

Chasing GaaS instead of focusing on 1st party single player games.

Raising prices is a multi-pronged issue.

1) Cost of silicon wafers has increase, raising the price of the processor inside the Playstation 5.
2) Cost of NAND/RAM has increased due to subsequent issues like factory disasters or cutting of production due to excess supply, raising prices.
3) Tariffs.
4) A for-profit company wanting more profit.

PS5 is pretty much the only reasonable choice for someone that wants high-end console gaming. The writing was on the wall at the launch of PS5 and Series. Where exactly were PS5 customers that didn't like $100 more supposed to go?

I'll take your word for it that they've beaten most previous gens then. I looked a bit up myself and saw that original PS made around 24 billion and even with inflation that isn't beating PS5 numbers.

Agreed that brand will start trending downwards. It isn't interested in growth or capturing lost Xbox customers.

You are entirely missing the point here. It's not PC gamers that aren't buying PS5, but PS5 and former Xbox customers that are moving to PC. That's where the loss is from.

Highest ever revenues and profits is a temporary result of cutting down the apple orchard to sell firewood. Long term they are going to lose money. Also the ridiculous profitability of microtransactions is what is driving this profit not PC ports. You can pay a dev 3K to make a $10 skin and then sell that skin to 10,000 people for a tidy profit of 100,000 or 3,300%.

The failure of your direct competitor shouldn't see a boost in your own sales?

^My comments are in bold above.

A for profit company wanting more short term profits at the expense of long term growth. I'm sure the rest are factors but at the end of the day we went from consoles being dirt cheap at the end of a gen to console prices actually rising. This does not bode well for the console market.

Sony has a very pathetic line up of first party Games for a 5 year duration, they won't miss 10% of their base,

Especially when you have to pay 1500$ to buy a gaming pc.

Playstation 5 Exclusives on PC In 5 years

Stellar Blade

Marvel's Spider-Man 2

Horizon Forbidden West

Returnal

God of War Ragnarök

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart

You don't need to spend $1500 for a gaming PC. PC's came in all shapes, sizes and price.

My "Gaming Laptop" with a Geforce RTX 4060 was under $900 AUD.
Price of a PS5 Slim? $830 with a disc drive. $1200 for the PS5 Pro.

No. You are missing the point. There is no guarantee those gamers would buy a console in the first place anyway.

As for Microsoft... They haven't found high levels of success on PC either, but enough to stem the flow of lost users and keep growing their subscriptions.
PC Gamers tend to like PC games, I know... It's a crazy concept.

Microsoft and Sony are also competing against themselves... I.E. The Xbox One and Playstation 4, there are still 10's of millions of gamers using last-generation devices because they still play their games just fine. I.E. Minecraft, GTA 5, Roblox, Fortnite, Warzone and other "service" games.

Why spend $800 AUD on a new device to keep playing the same games?

There is no evidence they are going to "lose money". In-fact the evidence showcases the opposite. - Sony has consecutively posted higher profits and revenues with every console generation.

We need to remember the cost of PC ports is insignificant to the revenues they bring in.

$700~ million in revenue for 3 easy ports? That would make any company very happy.

Considering the Playstation 5 and Xbox Series is "more of the same" but at a higher price? Yes and no.

But also... Their competitor has seen a boost in sales... Nintendo exists in the market as well. Everyone forgets how much the Switch has dominated sales.

My RTX 4060 notebook will run every modern game... And definitely all the PS5 ports.

I don't think console gamers realize they don't need to spend thousands for a decent rig, you can easily come at a lower price than the PS5 if you are happy with 720P, which some people actually are.

--::{PC Gaming Master Race}::--

BS that you can play modern games with a 450 usd laptop.

In 2020 I upgraded my pc to play Playstation 5 Class games & for a 2060 Super Nvidia,  Ryzen 6-Core, 2 terabit SSD , 16GB DDR4 E.T.C. the cost was around 1500 euro. (P.S. I play at 1440p NOT 4K)

If you think you gonna play Playstation 6 games on PC,  on 2027 when you upgrade with low cost I think you haven't calculated it ok.

Gt4 on ps2 can reach 1080i
