Technically, you do need to do a "custom" build for Switch 2, cos it's not as simple as just using PC presets. If porting was that easy, then the whole process would be done in an afternoon, when in reality in takes months and often requires the expertise of dedicated porting studios.

Devs don't just take go "let's take the PC low settings, set it to dynamic 720p, boom, done, let's ship it" it often takes a large amount of in-depth optimization to get a game running properly on a low power platform, in many cases you have to dig deep into the code and rework things to better fit the hardware.

Games today are indeed scalable, but not to the point where they "just run" without a lot of work.

Your original comment implied that "it looks a little last gen" (V-Rock's comment) partly because the devs had the Switch 2 in mind, which isn't exactly true, because most "current gen only" games also pretty much target Switch 2 level hardware or weaker as the minimum requirement (with some optimized for SteamDeck as "SteamDeck Verified"). Graphics not looking great doesn't have much to do with the Switch 2 in this case. The game's minimum requirements are probably well below Switch 2's specs anyway. A game can be designed with Switch 2 in mind and still have amazing graphics. Rift Apart can run on PC's much weaker than a Switch 2 and it looks stunning.

With that said, I think Fatal Frame looks good. I understand what you meant by Switch 2 being in mind, but it can be misinterpreted as you saying Switch 2 held it back. This game wouldn't have necessarily looked better without Switch 2's existence.

I don't think the 3 of us disgree on much here. It's just the way we're wording things lol.

Yeah I think we're saying similar things in different ways.

The main reason it looks the way it does I suspect is just that Tecmo Koei aren't really a "AAA" publisher on the same level as say Activision or Capcom, their games tend to be more AA and generally aren't super high end technologically.

That said, I do think Fatal Frame looks very nice; not cutting edge, but still quite attractive.

Around the Network

The game has received a new trailer, and will be getting a demo on March 5th which will carry over progress to the final game, plus a crossover with Silent Hill F

Looking forward to this! I've been meaning to get into this series since literally the Wii-days. This time I'll take the plunge. Just wished it wasn't a Game Key Card release.
