Well, I would do so too, but essentially this is promoting the game franchise, so I'd expect Activision wanting the film being more closely to what the videogames are instead of being a standalone film. I mean Spielberg would need to make 20 years of COD films to match the revenue one game in the series makes.

I'd still say a high quality film from a legendary director would be the best promotion. 

I suspect the real reason is that he might have pushed back on some of the dumb shit Activision would want to insert, like those retarded clown skins the games have nowadays where you play as Nicki Minaj or the Ninja Turtles and shit.
