I enjoy a lot game from various studios, especially Nintendo and Sony first party games. Companies like Ubisoft, EA, and Activision rarely make games that I want to play. I actually didn't enjoy the first Hollow Knight, it just didn't connect with me. I'm not planning on picking up Silksong at the moment.

you’re missing my original point. Yes, you may perceive the game as being worth only $20, but the fact that it has been as successful as it has at such a low price (compared to AA/AAA offerings) demonstrates the importances of the industry not heading in a direction of pricing out consumers. Hence, less is more. No more bloated budgets, don’t shoot to make the next Fortnite nor GTAV, just make fun games.

No, didn't miss your point, though I don't agree with your point, since there is market for both.

I consider Hollow Knight GOTY of 2017, though my favourite game from that year is Prey. Completely different budgets, for completely different experiences, which cannot be made on Hollow Knight budget.

Like in board games - you have something like 7 Wonders Duel, critical and commercial darling (and one of my GOATs), that sits at 21st spot of best games of all times on BGG, which you can find for $25 and is owned by 175K people on BGG. And then there's Twilight Imperium: Fourth Edition, that is at 6th spot, with 32K owners and costs around $160.

And then you have Kingdom Death: Monster, which is at 87th spot, with 14K owners and price tag of $400+

It's all about knowing your audience and return on investment - if your making game to make money, that is.

2017 was a crazy year, my favorite game of that year (and one of my favorites of all time) was Nier Automata, but the GOTY for me was Breath of the Wild, because it was a true generational game that shaked and changed the industry, but you know what is my third favorite game of that year? Doki Doki Literature Club.

All three are easy 10/10 for me.

Seriously?

Absolutely - all the praise I've seen in "gaming" media about the low price tag is just silly, given that original was $15 and this one costs more...20% more. Is it worth it? Absolutely.

I love Hollow Knight, but that's its price range, not $40 or $60 or $80 - comparisons with price range of AA/AAA games is beyond ridiculous.

My surprise concerns the maths. Going from $15 to $20 is an increase of 33%.

Legend11 correctly predicted that GTA IV will outsell Super Smash Bros. Brawl. I was wrong.

You're absolutely right - I'm crunching again, so my current processing capabilities are much worse than I thought.

That’s a fair point! And to add, I guess what I want to see more of these big studios pumping out smaller experiences, not always “shooting for the moon.” If there’s a market for both — something we both agree exists — then it’d be wise for more companies to engage with such markets. Nintendo (and maybe Sony?) has already declared intention to do such, and good on them for doing so. The industry may be heading in a positive direction, but there are many dev studios (e.g. Capcom, SquEnix, Activision) need to follow suit.

Nintendo never stopped putting out smaller games to keep us busy while we wait for the big ones, just look at Zelda, they gave us Hyrule Warriors, then BOTW, another HW, Link's Awakening remake, TOTK, Echoes of Wisdom, and next year a third HW. I even remember someone in the industry (I think YoshiP) praising Nintendo for keeping costs down while making EOW. If this was Sony, the only games we would have gotten in the same time period are BOTW and TOTK, but Nintendo always knew the importance of smaller games.

Sony knew it in PS3 era...not sure what happened with them after that.

Started Hallow Knight, if this game was made by Nintendo it would have been $60, possibly even $70 if it launched on NS2, just saying....

You're acting like this wasn't the most hyped up indie game in history. The mythology around it's enigmatic moving release date could pretty much fill it's own novel.

This is an anomaly. We've seen several massive hit indie games that have swept people into a frenzy, but they don't suddenly change the entire way the industry or consumers move.

Just enjoy the game without being too much a prisoner of the moment.

It probably would have been a lot more fun if Nintendo made it.  I couldn't get into it, the map system annoyed me.
