Which one would you buy?

AYANEO Pocket DS 2 11.76%

AYN Thor 5 29.41%

OneXSugar Sugar 1 0 0%

Something else 1 5.88%

I have no interest in such handheld 9 52.94%

The Aya Neo and OneXSugar both look really uncomfortable and ugly to me. I'm not sure why I'd want a 7" dual screen handheld that's primary draw is obviously ds/3ds emulation. Aya Neo is way too big for me.

Thor looks fantastic, anbernic looks like a great price...

I'm just concerned about the specs of the anbernic, sub $100 dual screen device makes me think it might be running the h700 chip like all of their XX handhelds... In that case drastic will be the only ds emulator it'll be powerful enough to run and there'll be no retroachievements support.

If they can put something better than the h700 in the rg DS I'll be very interested, the t618 for example, but at $100 they'd seriously impress me if they did.

Thor looks perfect, and it's a great price for what you get but my miserly ways stop me from pulling the trigger. A dual screen 3DS XL sized device capable of 3DS/PS2/GC/Switch emulation though? Pretty much a dream device.

Yeah, T618 or H728 would do the job for MelonDS, but it's left to be seen if they manage to squeeze that under $100.

AYN Thor indeed looks perfect, and from few reviews I watched it delivers on what was promised for fantastic bang/buck. The only thing keeping me from squeezing the trigger is my assumption that, since they are launching Odin 3 with Snapdragon 8 Elite in November, AYN will announce Thor 2 with that same SoC as well by the end of the year - and 8 Elite is, IIRC, almost twice as powerful.

As good as they are, Citra is all I need for playing my 3DS games on the big screen. The difference between a 3DS and fully powered up Citra is staggering.

You know it deserves the GOTY.

None of them. The DSi XL can be had for around $100 in pristine condition. It has the correct aspect ratio and pixel density/tech to display DS games the way they were intended. A 3DS XL can be had for less than any of these and is guaranteed to run the games more accurately than any emulator. This is funny to me because making an emulator device for something as recent and widely available as the 3DS makes no sense. It launched in 2011 and was discontinued in 2019. Might as well make an inferior knock-off emulator device for the PS4 or XB1 while you're at it.

Lack of 3D is indeed very staggering. ;)

My biggest problem with handhelds like these is that I can't take the GBA SP equivalent and plug it into my GameCube. My GBA's are getting any newer :(

With these 3/DS clones, I'd get one if my 3DS didn't work anymore.

GBA SP will last at least 30 more years with proper capacitor replacement. Retrogamerepairshop has a ton of upgrade parts to make old GBAs and GBCs really sing.

Indeed it is, but I find playing DS/3DS games on big screen a bit awkward.

Thor and other Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 and higher devices can run 3DS games at 4x resolution and higher for really crisp visuals, with lush amount of AA. Only pity is that those screens are not 1600x960 for upper and 1280x960 for lower, which would give them perfect 4x integer scaling without black bars (and 5x integer for DS for no bars on lower screen).

But then again, while they are clamshell design with obvious main draw being DS/3DS emulation, they are not limited to that, and go even up to somewhat older PC games via Winlator/Gamehub.

I have a 3DS... I still want a Thor lol. It does a lot more than a modded 3DS can. You're treating it like the only thing it can do is play DS/3DS lol.

Unlike a 3DS it can also run N64, PSP, GC, PS2, Wii, WiiU, Vita, Switch and any android game/app. There's something to be said for having one device that can do so much instead of having to carry multiple other devices. Plus it will run 3DS games at 1080p instead of 240p so there's that.

The Thor looks phenomenal! I can carry one 3DS XL sized device and have access to so many games and systems.

Pretty good review of Thor, giving both the positives and some negatives (which are mostly about ergonomics of triggers and some system software issues)

And there are already software updates for some of the problems he mentioned:

I guess, if you don't want to be bothered with original hardware for those other game systems, don't mind playing home console games on a tiny screen, don't mind inaccurate emulation, and don't have a capable PC for emulating, then yeah it would have the advantage of playing those other systems. Upscaling older game systems is overrated. You're blowing out the image and showing detail that was never meant to be seen. Retro games look best on the original display technology whether it is a CRT or a 3D LCD at 400x240. Hell, an original system, a CRT, and an S-Video cable will give you a more authentic and better looking setup than the vast majority of emulators. Don't get me wrong. I would love an Ayaneo type device if it was FPGA and had 3D Visuals included along with better speakers.

Anyway, these devices are mainly for Gen Z kids that have been conditioned to think that all tech dies within a decade and that retro games are expensive. Outside of Poke'mon and a handful of Atlus RPGs, the best of the DS and 3DS libraries are relatively cheap.
