Forums - Sales - Tie Ratio: NPD Numbers

Remember guys, the PS3 and 360 each sold like 150k units, was it? 250 maybe.

The Wii sold like 4 times that amount, and it still managed to beat the PS3 in software tie in ratio?

That's amazing.

NYT showed tie in ratio, because if it showed static numbers, there would be no way to call the article "Wii doesn't sell software." NYT idiots.

Meh, you're being a bit harsh on the New York Times. They're not so much fools as they are...inexperienced? indifferent?...towards video games as a whole. Can you blame them? Before the Wii sparked mainstream interest, gaming's image was still that of the nerd playing games in his parents' basement. Give it time, and I'm sure you'll see things get better.

And yes, the tie-ratio does look that much more impressive in light of the hardware sales, but I maintain that tie-ratio is the lamest statistic EVER! (Yes, I'm including all the achievements on 360)

It's called research and hiring someone expreienced in the field.  Do you think their food section isn't run by a chef?  Or their auto section by someone who doesn't know cars?  Etc...   Had this been in a financial story, the rest of the press world would have railed on them for the article and the author fired.  I will grant them that the industry is new to the mainstream media but the talent pool of credible video game journalists to recruit an author from is large enough that they should be ashamed of themselves for not doing so.

What I would like to see more are reports like that:

http://multiplayerblog.mtv.com/2008/04/25/ubisoft-breaks-down-game-sales-by-platform-ps3-rises-and-wii-drops/

Numbers of games sold is practically meaningless (bargain bin 2$ anyone?) but revenue per platform for the big publishers. Thats something else.

For Ubisoft the DS is (not surprisingly) much more important than the PSP.

Nintendo DS
2006/2007 - Q4: 20% // Full Fiscal Year: 11%
2007/2008 - Q4: 27% // Full Fiscal Year: 26%
PSP
2006/2007 - Q4: 4% // Full Fiscal Year: 5%
2007/2008 - Q4: 2% // Full Fiscal Year: 4%

But PS3 and 360 are 2times and 3times as important as the Wii (and the Wii is dropping.

PlayStation 3
2006/2007 - Q4: 5% // Full Fiscal Year: 2% (System not released until 11/06)
2007/2008 - Q4: 23% // Full Fiscal Year: 20%
Xbox 360
2006/2007 - Q4: 29% // Full Fiscal Year: 28%
2007/2008 - Q4: 33% // Full Fiscal Year: 26%
Wii
2006/2007 - Q4: 14% // Full Fiscal Year: 14% (System not released until 11/06)
2007/2008 - Q4: 9% // Full Fiscal Year: 10%

Of course this is just a snapshot and Ubisoft had the huge hit Assassin's Creed this year which of course pushed 360 and PS3. But it would be nice to have total software revenue per console. Because this is the one important number for third-party support.

DS vs PSP: 4.7 vs 4.2

what does that tell you?

1. calling DS a software king while dismiss PSP as piracy driven is absolutely ridiculous

2. VGC GROSSLY undertracked PSP software.

Nah, did you see the previous ones from Ubi soft?Back near wen Red Steel and RRR sold a million copies? On those reports the Wii was up there on top in terms of the money it made Ubisoft. That was back when they then promised Nintendo quality gaming, and swore they wouldnt put shovelware on the Wii anymore. Then what did we get from them last quarter? No Assasins Creed, hell nothing worth mentioning at all really.

I disagree with that being important for third party support. Nintendo was on top for Ubi earlier this year, and it amounted to zero. In the end the companies are going to do whatever the hell they want to.

What's interesting is when you only consider what games are worth a tie in.

Based on 75 or above on metacritic....
Wii 32
PS3 - 68
360 - 151

The 360 deserves 5 times the tie-ins as the wii considering games that have favorable reviews. Conisdering that publishers only put effort into that many more games for the 360, it's amazing it's not even double on the tie in ratio.

Nope, NPD only tracks the US and Canada where PSP software has been decent compared to the rest of the world, especially Japan.

In addition, it doesn't show growth. In the first 3 quarters of the last fiscal year, PSP software sales contracted 3 million units compared to the same time period one year earlier. DS software sales on the other hand grew 50  million units in the same time period. These aren't VGC numbers, but are from Sony's and Nintendo's own fiscal reports.

So DS software sales are increasing while PSP software sales are shrinking.

Nope they are going to go where they earn the most money. It's of course true that this is not representative because its only one publisher and it had its biggest hit 2007 on PS3/360.
But in the end that is what counts. They will develop games for the platforms they make the most money with. I am for example 100% sure that Sega is developing a lot of Mario & Sonic sequels/knockoffs.

Why isn't this thread getting more attention?

And where's DMeisterJ's obligatory "How many of those Wii games sold are from 3rd parties lulz?" post?

Because the thread title sucks.. I was just about to start a thread on that article until I saw this..

Title should of been - Wii beats PS3 again!  Software Ratio Roxxars!
