Forums - Sony - Will the PS5 surpass the global sales of the PS3 by the end of the year?

According to data from vgchartz, the PS5 has reached 77.3 million units by the end of May. With 7 months left in the year, the PS5 would need to sell 10 million units in 7 months. Adjustments may occur as Sony reports its financial data. However, the PS5 would need to sell more than 1 million units per month.

I don't think so, but I think it will pass that milestone in Q1 2026. Had GTA VI launched this year, that probably would've been enough.

Lifetime Sales Predictions

Switch: 161 million (was 73 million, then 96 million, then 113 million, then 125 million, then 144 million, then 151 million, then 156 million)

PS5: 122 million (was 105 million, then 115 million) Xbox Series X/S: 38 million (was 60 million, then 67 million, then 57 million. then 48 million. then 40 million)

Switch 2: 120 million (was 116 million)

PS4: 120 mil (was 100 then 130 million, then 122 million) Xbox One: 51 mil (was 50 then 55 mil)

I believe there is this possibility if Sony does a PlayStation showcase in September showing its upcoming games and a holiday promotion. Sony shipped 77.8 million units by the end of March, and if it ships 3 million per quarter until September, it will reach 84 million, and 6 million in the holiday quarter would put the PS5 at 90 million units shipped. ...

The forecast is still remaining at almost 93m. units at the end of FY2025, so practically Yes.

I believe so, yes, IF:

• PS5 will get a noticable price cut during holiday season (November & December.

• No political or currency circumstances will have a negative impact on Playstation in general.

2025's software lineup is pretty strong.

If Sony manages to have decent offerings during (October) November and December, I am very confident PS5 could reach around ~87.5-88m units as of December, 31st 2025.

It's really dependend on November & December, I believe.

Should Sony not be able to offer all PS5 models or at least base PS5 at a decent discount, I assume worldwide sell-through will top somewhere around ~84.5-85.5m units at the end of 2025.

Which would still be a great result.

Sony would need to hold a PlayStation showcase showing all of its future games to get the public excited.
