Switch 2 is killing it, well deserved as its a great system.

And yeah, echoing Tober in that Xbox Series failing to outsell the now-replaced Switch 1 on Xbox's home turf is disastrous, but at this point, that's to be expected, the console is a dead man walking.

No beating around the bush, for Xbox Series X/S to start dropping 50 % year on year after under 5 years of the market is disastrous, thats like end of gen drops happening already (In its by far strongest market as well). Switch 1 sales dropped 60 % year on year, after more than 8 years on the market and its replacement just releasing, so Xbox is much closer to Switch 1 drops than PS5 drops.

Switch 2 Sets Record With 5M Sold in 1st Month - Worldwide Hardware Estimates for June 2025

The Nintendo Switch 2 was the best-selling console worldwide with 5,011,250 units sold for June 2025, according to VGChartz estimates.

This is easily the biggest hardware launch in video game history. The previous biggest launch month was set by the PS5 with an estimated 2.76 million units sold in November 2020. It should be noted the first month for the PS5 was three weeks, while it was five weeks for the Switch 2. The PS5 sold 4.37 million units by the end of December 2020 (eight weeks) and the PS4 sold 4.45 million units by the end of December 2013 (eight weeks).

The PlayStation 5 was the second best-selling console with an estimated 916,703 units sold to bring lifetime sales to 77.26 million units. The Nintendo Switch 1 was the third best-selling console with an estimated 316,250 units sold to bring lifetime sales to 151.01 million units. The Xbox Series X|S came in fourth place with 157,326 units sold to bring its lifetime sales to 33.27 million units.

Switch 2 sales compared to the first month for Switch 1 in 2017 are up by 2.68 million units as the Switch 1 sold 2.33 million units in its first month worldwide in March 2017.

PS5 sales compared to the same month for the PS4 in 2018 are down by nearly250,000 units, while the Xbox Series X|S compared to the same month for the Xbox One are down by nearly 344,000 units. PS4 sold 1,166,203 units for the month of June 2018 and Xbox One sales were at 501,216 units.

PlayStation 5 sales compared to the same month a year ago are down by 159,512 (-14.8%). Xbox Series X|S sales are down by 151,836 units (-49.1%) and Nintendo Switch 1 sales are down by 449,823 units (-58.7%).

Looking at sales month-on-month, PlayStation 5 sales are up by over 156,000 units, Xbox Series X|S sales are up by over 20,000 units, and Nintendo Switch 1 sales are down by nearly 20,000.

2025 year-to-date, the PlayStation 5 has sold an estimated 5.23 million units, the Nintendo Switch 2 has sold 5.01 million units, the Nintendo Switch 1 has sold 2.38 million units, and the Xbox Series X|S has sold 1.28 million units.

5m in a month is insane numbers.

The PS5 to Xbox Series ratio is now a brutal 6:1. XBS is also less than half of Switch 1, which is now a replaced system. He's dead, Jim.

Speaking of Switch 1, not a bad hold at all for its first month post-replacement. A lot of folks seemed to expect it to grind to a halt once its successor was announced/released, but it doesn't look like that's happening.

That is appreciated. It is Machina and myself who work on the hardware numbers.

The price increase killed Xbox Series sales. That and stock has been limited. Sales in April weren't down too much year-on-year, but have dropped like a rock the last couple of months.

5 million in just a month is truly extraordinary considering the PS5 and PS5 couldn't do that with two and their first couple months being November and December. The record has been destroyed to such a degree it wouldn't surprise me at all if the Switch 2 keeps it forever. Time will tell how it'll start selling next year once demand is consistently fulfilled but with a launch this gigantic safe to say we're looking at another console with a high likelihood of entering the top 5 best selling of all time. Whether it'll finish closer to 120m or 150m is the main question I think.

For the Switch 1 it had a another drop with it going from just under 50% down in May to just under 60% down in June. It didn't decline as much as I was expecting since I thought sub 50k weekly would likely be happening by that point. What's interesting is like Japan Europe had a big decline right after the successor came out but for whatever reason the US not only didn't but did basically identical to May. If it had also declined it would've been selling about 50k weekly so I really wonder what's going on there. It'll decline further in the US before long I'm sure but it not being immediately impacted by the launch of the Switch 2 there seems strange. Either way the YoY declines look like they'll settle at 60-70% for a bit soon so it's unsurprisingly falling off fast though at 151m that's not a problem at all other than its likelihood of beating the record.

The PS5 had a notably weaker June than I was expecting. Its weekly average was barely any different than in May despite the vast majority of the discount period being in the former and it's the 2nd worst June for it yet which isn't ideal when there were still stock issues for it back in 2022. It's still selling really well of course but with its former main competition basically being dead it's a bad sign for the traditional console market if it's still selling notably worse than the PS4 did even after the big Xbox price increase. If Sony does the same thing then the market will start looking outright rough. At least the PS5 has a bigger 2026 compared to the PS4's 2019 going for it thanks to GTA 6.

And yeah the Xbox Series is basically done now with it being 50% down YoY and selling about half what an 8 year old console that just got replaced sold. People were premature with this before but it truly is selling like the Wii U did weekly at this point and everything points to it declining further over the next couple years with Microsoft no longer caring about selling it so should start selling even worse than the Wii U weekly next year. GTA 6 will still do at least a bit that year since the cheapest way to play the game will still count for something but safe to say the impact won't be that much at this point unless Microsoft suddenly starts pushing the console again. It's also safe to say that College Football won't help out nearly at much this July cause of the big price increase and it just being another entry when the the one last year was the first one in over a decade. Unless a Fortnite level hit comes out of nowhere soon the Xbox Series is finished selling a relevant amount of units so going forward probably the only thing of note to watch for will be seeing just how horrid the sales get in the last stretch of its life.
