With how low activity has gotten an issue is it might get barely any threads but I suppose if it encourages some more thread making then it could be worth it. Something though is what the cut off point would be since with the 360 turning 20 years old soon debate over 7th gen consoles being retro or not should heat up.
I'm certainly a retro gamer and would like it, but I also see the point that everything is pretty well covered and I'm not fan of forums cut to unnecessarily many small pieces.
Maybe 2000 would be a clean cut off? Though that leaves 6th gen a big problem, particularly Dreamcast.

I'd say 2005, include 6th gen. That's been 20 years and 3 console generations (4 for Nintendo with the launch of the Switch 2) ago already by now, that's already a huge timeframe in gaming
