Yeah I feel like they should have gotten rid of ROG in the name and went with Xbox Ally S & Xbox Ally X

This thread is about a piece of hardware though, so claiming that the hardware itself doesn't actually matter is silly. |
I’m with you on this, I get that battling Steam is their main mission but at the end of the day it’s a portable gaming device therefore it is in competition with other portable gaming devices.
People in the market for a new portable gaming device will be comparing this to things like Switch 2, Steam Deck, Legion Go, etc.

That would have been a much nicer name but since it's an ASUS product, I imagine they want their brand to take first billing, it is very much an ASUS product first and foremost, with an Xbox spin to it, but many of the Xbox related things, such as the UI/UX are eventually coming to all PC handhelds. In short, I don't think Microsoft actually named this product. ROG is an ASUS owned brand.

Yeah I get that, but I have a hard time believing people will buy the device because of the ROG branding rather than the Xbox branding. And like you said, it’s a much nicer name lol

Mate, I generally find you very reasonable and temperate, but you're just being a bit stubborn here and not seeing the bigger picture - it's literally not about the actual hardware, which in this case is almost completely irrelevant, it's not about how much does it sell against Switch 2 - MS has much bigger fish to fry, and that's SteamOS. I'll repeat again - they cannot risk something like Android happening again: "The greatest mistake ever is whatever mismanagement I engaged in that caused Microsoft not to be what Android is." - Bill Gates |
I do see the Steam vs Windows picture, that just wasn't really what I was referring to in my posts.
Even in terms of this larger picture, I just feel like Xbox Ally won't make a big difference either in the hardware war or the OS war. It's cool that is exists for those that want one, that just seems like it will be a very narrow slice of the audience.

XBOX Ally in itself, no...not likely. This version of Windows 11 (with or without XBOX)? Quite a bit, if MS doesn't fuck it up again somehow.
Rog Xbox Ally will not do much but as already pointed out, this is about the combining of MS ecosystems (Xbox & Wondows gaming) just like Nintendo did with Switch going from two distinct platforms (home & handheld consoles).
Curl this is kind of like if someone asked specifically which will sell more between Switch Lite or PS5? One is just a piece of the ecosystem (Switch Lite or Rog Xbox Ally) and the other is the entire ecosystem (Switch 2 or PS5). Rog Xbox Ally isnt just competing against Switch 2 or the other handheld PCs, it's competing against Xbox and other Window PCs in its same ecosystem because a consumer can purchase them and have access to the MS ecosystem without purchasing a Rog Xbox Ally just like Switch Lite competes against its family.
Nintendo, PS, and Apple will have higher selling individual hardware because consumers aren't given as much choice in hardware for accessing the ecosystems (Switch games/eshop, PS games/PSN, and iOS). While Microsoft, Google, and Valve are focused on building their ecosystems via several hardware products (Xbox, various Windows PCs including the handheld Windows PCs, various Android phones, and PCs running Steam OS including the handheld Steam PCs). Basically their consumer base is less concentrated on single hardware like Nintendo, PS, and Apple.

The lighter version of Windows is the only interesting this about the device.

There's plenty of interesting things to see when it releases - Win11 "Game mode" and how it performs against regualr Win11, and SteamOS (on AOKZOE A1X1 for example), XBOX integration, actual Z2 AI Extreme SoC, and if they'll use it for some sort of Auto SR...
