I picked mine up without a pre-order from target about 4 in the afternoon. They were down to their last 5 and had been out of the bundle for a while. They said they made quota for their department waaay early in the day. I called one Walmart before who was out of both SKUs before calling target. All anecdotal, it was easier to get my hands on one than I expected.
I will agree abut the PS5 chip shortage making those harder to get at launch. It also made getting a new PS4 hard to get my hands on as well. I finally just bought a PS4 Pro from an individual and they threw in an old Fat PS2 in the deal due to causing me some inconvenience (had to go back for the systems the next day because the factory restore took longer than they anticipated).
As for the iterative debate ... My launch Wii had GameCube controller ports and played GameCube games. I would not consider the Wii iterative of the GameCube. No one has mentioned that the hook for the WiiU was supposed to be asymmetrical game-play and power for 3rd parties. Most of the Nintendo Land games focused on the Asymmetrical game-play. One of my favorite games on the system ZombiU used the game-pad really well. Sadly Nintendo Land and that one were the only ones that really stood out to me for good game-pad use. I mostly used my Pro Controller (what a battery life) with the game-pad on a stand on the table in front of me when not playing those 2 titles. Man I miss me some Animal Crossing: Sweetest Day. For a simple game we had a blast with that one.
I understand the argument for iterative consoles but when I think of iterative consoles I think PS1>PS2 no major changes mostly more power and a few minor additions.
