Forums - Nintendo - Nintendo Switch 2 day one buyer discussion thread.

Switch 2 will be...

A success 59 83.10%

A disaster 2 2.82%

Somewhere in the middle. 10 14.08%

Total:71

I picked mine up without a pre-order from target about 4 in the afternoon. They were down to their last 5 and had been out of the bundle for a while. They said they made quota for their department waaay early in the day. I called one Walmart before who was out of both SKUs before calling target. All anecdotal, it was easier to get my hands on one than I expected.

I will agree abut the PS5 chip shortage making those harder to get at launch. It also made getting a new PS4 hard to get my hands on as well. I finally just bought a PS4 Pro from an individual and they threw in an old Fat PS2 in the deal due to causing me some inconvenience (had to go back for the systems the next day because the factory restore took longer than they anticipated).

As for the iterative debate ... My launch Wii had GameCube controller ports and played GameCube games. I would not consider the Wii iterative of the GameCube. No one has mentioned that the hook for the WiiU was supposed to be asymmetrical game-play and power for 3rd parties. Most of the Nintendo Land games focused on the Asymmetrical game-play. One of my favorite games on the system ZombiU used the game-pad really well. Sadly Nintendo Land and that one were the only ones that really stood out to me for good game-pad use. I mostly used my Pro Controller (what a battery life) with the game-pad on a stand on the table in front of me when not playing those 2 titles. Man I miss me some Animal Crossing: Sweetest Day. For a simple game we had a blast with that one.
I understand the argument for iterative consoles but when I think of iterative consoles I think PS1>PS2 no major changes mostly more power and a few minor additions.

I don't know where you are trying to take this but I said you have an already formed opinion on how Switch 2 is going to perform and are working backwards to find anecdotal indications to support that. Never said anything about the validity of being overly focused on stock on a videogame sales forum. I also care to find out how consoles are selling, otherwise I would not be here. I am however not going to take the anecdotal evidence that stores around here are selling out as an indication that Switch 2 has had an amazing launch because it I don't know what the supply quantity Nintendo provided.

Moreover, the part about PS4 following the same graph as PS5 is flat out wrong. PS5 fell behind for about 5 million at some point, exactly because of the supply problems before boosting back up when the supply situation improved.

I know exactly what you're saying and I am telling you, you're wrong.

Very solid argument.

BTW, how come you ignored the second part of the post? Here's the chart if you can't find it. Did you misremember or did you think noone would check that claim?

I wonder how many they ruined. 🤣 Poor bastards all hype to be done out of it by two tiny holes.

Good thing I didn't go with GameStop this time. To be fair, though, I didn't get the system until about 5 months after launch.

It launched with Mario Kart. That alone will make it sell faster in the first year than Switch 1. Also it's way closer to PS5/Xbox than Switch 1 was to PS4/Xbox. So lots of 3rd party support even if it is just game-key-cards. It would take a tidal shift in Gen Z and Gen Alpha to make Switch 2 not hit 120 million. Something like 70% of them becoming PC-Only or moving to Smartphones.

Switch 2 is an amazing piece of hardware. I absolutely love it. My only gripe with this launch is the lack of a title somewhat on the same level as BotW. Mario Kart Will never be a system seller to me ,it is a super a super fun game that I buy when I already have the system instead of a game that makes me want to buy a system for.

Donkey Kong coming out in 6 weeks.

Best Buy shipped mine a day later oh well, just got it a couple of hours ago and loving it. Mario Kart is fantastic as expected. Going to play some Gamecube F Zero later and probably jump into BOTW for a second playthrough with the improved visuals and frame rate when I finish unlocking everything on Mario Kart.

Let me break it down.

Wii and WiiU share the same name.

Wii and WiiU share the same PowerPC + Radeon graphics.

Wii and WiiU were literally built around a "controller gimmick".

Wii and WiiU both supported Wii controls in their games.

WiiU was literally the direct iterative successor to the Wii in every conceivable way.

You can argue all you want, but trying to rewrite history won't work here.

Wii and WiiU share a part of the same name. So do all PlayStations and all Xboxes.

Only a tiny tiny fraction of WiiU games supported Wii controllers or the Wii sensor bar.

Only a tiny tiny fraction of WiiU games supported motion controls, the focus was clearly on controls with sticks and buttons.

And all Playstations and Xbox's are iterative updates to each other.

In the end, even Google agrees with me. Haha

Yeah definitely a lack of games on launch. - Mario Kart World is the only standout.

* Games like Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom are good, but they are just re-releases with minor enhancements, not worth a re-purchase over.
* The LCD display has garbage colour, blacks and contrasts over the outgoing OLED model. It's HDR is fake as it doesn't have local dimming zones.
* The game cart situation is still crap. (Code in a box, Game Key Cards, Carts and Digital, plus some Switch 1 games get free updates, others need to pay a fee)
* Poor Battery Life.

And that is literally the only gripes to be had, which is small and inconsequential... And leaves a ton of room for an improved updated variant in a few years time. (Which I will also buy.)

But those issues are overshadowed with:
* Larger and higher variable refresh rate screen.
* Vastly better audio and speakers.
* Improved performance.
* Backwards compatibility.
* Better Joycons with a Mouse feature.

I absolutely loved Breath of the Wild and even though I owned Tears of the Kingdom on Switch, ended up putting the game down as I just couldn't manage the poor performance which was significantly worse than Breath of the Wilds already poor framerate. - So I will probably jump into that after I have my fun with Mario Kart World.
In saying that, I will argue games like Metroid Prime 4 will look better on the Switch OLED which will showcase the extremely contrasty visuals far better.

I also have a PowerA battery case for the Switch, I haven't tried it yet, but I am hoping it will fit onto the Switch 2 and double my battery life.

Nah I'm sure it will still look better on Switch 2 even with the worse screen because of the lower resolution and lower image quality it has on Switch 1. Even though it looks good for a Switch 1 game, it has a bit of a washed out and blurry look compared to Switch 2. It will definately make for an interesting comparison that's for sure and if it does look better on Switch OLED than Switch 2 than I think Nintendo have made a mistake with the Switch 2 screen they chose.

You are absolutely right about the downgrade in the screen quality. OLED is unbeatable!
