Edit: see master thread:
https://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/thread/249268/master-thread-favorite-games-from-different-countries/

My previous thread and poll on games from Germany (see link, if you missed it),

https://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/thread/249238/what-is-your-favorite-game-developed-by-a-german-developer/1/

got some great responses from some of you guys, however not as many participated in the poll for it to be relevant for what I really wanted to do with it (create a “world” map of most loved games), I will hence probably not make so many of these threads as originally planned. But since I found the debate fun, I will still a couple more of them. They are a lot of work though. I hope you will vote in the poll and write your favorite game.

I decided to pick the country that I live in (though not the one I come from or have citizenship in), and a country that has an absolutely colossal game industry: Sweden. It is probably only music they are as good at as making games. I am sure most of you have probably played a game from Sweden, digging down into the repertoire, I am convinced it must be in the top 5 countries when comes to video game releases, not counting mobile games (fuck even Candy Crush is Swedish!). Took me a while to do the research for this, and discovered a lot of games I already knew, but did not know were developed in Sweden! So once again, please vote and write your favorite Swedish game, remind me of important omissions and correct any mistakes I may have made.

So to repeat the rules:

The rule is that the main Developer should be from the country, publisher is irrelevant. Support teams do not count. If two teams from different countries have contributed equally or almost equally, they can count for both countries. Likewise if a developer is split between two nations, and there is no reason to believe it mainly made the game in the other country. In case of incomplete information, I sometimes may have to do a qualified guess on whether a game qualifies or not (let's hope that is not needed).

Some notable Swedish developers and their games:

Mojang Studios

Mojang's reputation mostly comes from a single game, but one that is considered the best selling of all time, Minecraft. You all know it, no reason explain how impactful and influential this has been. They have gone on to make other games in the franchise, but the original and it’s endless DLC is the one.

Notable game

Minecraft

Dice

Ah Dice, certainly one of the big, big developers in the industry. Mostly known for the Battlefield franchise, which they created and have been spitting out new entries for consistently. They have met their fair share of criticism lately though, also for the handling of the Star Wars: Battlefront reboot, which has been in their hands the past decade. They also developed a personal favorite of mine, Mirror’s Edge, and the less inspired sequel, which are completely different games to what else they are doing.

Notable games

Battlefield 2

Battlefield: Bad Company

Battlefield: Bad Company 2

Battlefield 3

Battlefield 1

Star Wars: Battlefront 2

Mirror’s Edge

Paradox Interactive:

A developer that almost warrants its own poll with the ton of acclaimed titles they have developed. The Europa Universalis has lot of hardcore fans, it seems IV is the most popular. Victoria II is beloves, so is Stellaris and the Hearts of Iron series. The Crusader King series has probably become their great blockbuster.

Notable games:

Europa Universalis IV

Hearts of Iron III

Hearts of Iron IV

Victoria 2

Victoria 3

Stellaris

Crusader Kings 3

MachineGames

These folks resurrected the Wolfenstein franchise and made the latest Indiana Jones. Save to say, these folks love making games where you get to unapologetically slay Nazis! What’s not to like?

Notable games:

Wolfenstein: The New Order

Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus

Indiana Jones and the Great Circle

Avalanche Studios

Developer of the Just Cause series, which has lots of fans. Mad Max and theHunter games also have fans.

Notable games:

Just Cause 2

Mad Max

Rage 2

Starbreeze studios:

Another developer with multiple beloved titles. The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay, its sequel and The Darkness are such a cult classic. The Syndicate has its fans. Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons was a big deal, while Payday 2 was a commercial success.

Notable games:

The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay

The Darkness

The Syndicate

Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons

Hazelight Studios

Basicly taking over the design philosophy of Starbreeze’s Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons (No wonder, Josef Fares directed all these titles). Hazelight have really pushed the 2-player co-op experience forward with three successful titles.

Notable games:

A way Out

It Takes Two

Split Fiction

Frictional Games

Survival horror specialists with Penumbra and Amnesia series.

Notable games:

Amnesia: The Dark Descent

Soma

Image & Form/Thunderfull

Indie developer with ridiculous consistency. Mostly in one franchise, but multiple genres:

Notable games:

SteamWorld Dig

SteamWorld Dig 2

SteamWorld Heist

SteamWorld Heist 2

SteamWorld Quest: Hand of Gilgamech

Tarsier Studios

They are from my current home town, Malmö, yet I haven’t played their games. Started as assistance team for Little Big Planet. Now they have developed two beloved titles:

Notable games:

Little Nightmares

Little Nightmares 2

Simogo

Another Malmö developer! I have played the bizarre Device 6 a little. One of the most unique mobile games for sure. Sayonara Wild Hearts was probably their big mainstream breakthrough. Lorelei and the Laser Eyes went a bit under the radar, but it apparently made a lot of peoples jaws drop, can’t wait to try it.

Notable games:

Device 6

Sayonara Wild Hearts

Lorelei and the Laser Eyes

Massive Entertainment

Another significant AAA developer from Sweden. Why did I give myself this task, there are just way too many games from this country.

Notable games:

World in Conflict

Tom Clancy's The Division

Tom Clancy's The Division 2

Other titles for your consideration

Valheim

Unravel

Unravel 2

The Ascent

GeoGuessr

Gunman Clive

Geometry Dash

Hotline Miami

Helldivers 2

Warhammer: Vermintide 2

Warhammer 40,000: Darktide

Need for Speed Heat

Richard Burns Rally

Satisfactory

GTR 2 – FIA GT Racing Game

Candy Crush Saga

V Rising

Wolfenstein: The New Order.

A fantastic shooter with a badass sense of style and punchy satisfying shooting, but also a lot of heart.

No mention of V Rising from Stunlock Studios? I feel like that's all I see people play lately.

Huh. Sweden really punches above its weight, doesn’t it?

I’m going to go with a sleeper hit: Bionic Commando Rearmed. It’s a great remake and one of the very best XBLA titles. Developer Grin wisely kept what worked in the iconic NES game and ditched/enhanced what didn’t. Sadly, the studio is now defunct

Good point. I didn't realize it was that popular! I added it to the other games section!

Surprising choice! But cool!

Only played it a little bit, but my impression was also really good. Did you play any of the sequels/spin-offs?

This. I liked it even more than its sequel.

Its between Wolfenstein: The New Order and SteamWorld Dig 2. Both really fun games.

Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay was an absolutely amazing immersive sim. Shame the movie that released alongside the game sucked lol but what an awesome experience it was. Everything oozed coolness and style, but with that deep immersive sim gameplay that made me think of this classic when I was playing the new Indiana Jones game. Which surprisingly had a lot of the same developers lol
