Forums - Sales - 2.2 million people applied for the Switch 2 preorder lottery on the Japanese My Nintendo store alone

https://x.com/Nintendo/status/1914982671522083155

In order to even apply, you need to have an active NSO subscription, FYI.

Full tweet translation: "Hello, this is Furukawa. We have been procuring many materials and proceeding with production in advance so that we can deliver the Nintendo Switch 2 to you. On April 2nd, we announced details about the Nintendo Switch 2 and started accepting applications for the lottery sale on the My Nintendo Store. As a result, we received an extremely large number of applications, approximately 2.2 million people in Japan alone. However, this number far exceeds our expectations, and far exceeds the number of Nintendo Switch 2 consoles that can be delivered from the My Nintendo Store on June 5th. Therefore, unfortunately, we expect that a significant number of customers will not be selected when the winners are announced tomorrow, April 24th.

In order to avoid the trouble of those who were not selected in the first lottery sale having to reapply, My Nintendo Store will automatically carry over those who were not selected in the first lottery sale to the second lottery sale. However, even including the quantity for the second lottery sale, we cannot fulfill all of the applications we received. We deeply apologize for not being able to meet your expectations despite our prior preparations.

In response to this demand, we are currently working on further strengthening our production system. In addition, starting tomorrow, April 24th, game retailers and online stores nationwide will begin accepting pre-orders or lottery sales for the Nintendo Switch 2 console (please check the information of each retailer for details). The console will also continue to be sold at the My Nintendo Store after the release date (more details will be announced at a later date). With the cooperation of retailers, we will continue to ship the console and make efforts to get as many Nintendo Switch 2 consoles as possible into your hands.

We plan to continue producing and shipping a considerable number of Nintendo Switch 2 units in the future. We apologize for the delay in our ability to meet your expectations, and we appreciate your understanding."

Wonder how much stock they're shipping for launch. With the Switch 2 being so cheap in Japan it's no surprise demand is through the roof.

The Japanese price may seem low in terms its dollar equivalent, but that's cos the yen is very weak right now.

By Japanese standards it's not cheap; it costs 50% more than the Switch 1 for instance.

Many peoples complained about the price and in the end the Switch 2 will sell out worldwide easily (especially in Japan).

Yeah sure, but in comparison to other modern gaming hardware it's a bargain. PC hardware for example An RTX 4060 8GB has an RRP for 52,800 Yen, more than the Switch 2, where-as in the west the RTX 4060 8gb RRP was $299 to Switch 2's $449. Nintendo are offering a very good price on it in Japan while other companies aren't eating the cost of the weak Yen themselves, and probably losing quite a bit on each unit sold.

So yeah Switch 2 is by far the best value modern gaming option in Japan, nothing comes close to the affordability except previous generation consoles or a Series S (but no one wants that in Japan.)

Oh it's great value no doubt, but 50,000 yen is still (from what I can find on Google) around 10% of the average Japanese person's entire monthly salary, so far from cheap.

I'm just glad I got selected by Nintendo and could pre-order at the My Nintendo Store here in germany. The Mario Kart bundle with a Pro Controller 2 and a Gamecube Controller cost me 670 Euros, but I'm quite certain it will be worth it. =D

I also got selected for the Switch 2 Experience in Berlin this weekend, just a few days left! I know I'm not helping this thread in any way but I just wanted to share my excitement, lol. Here's hoping that everyone gets their Switch 2 console as soon as possible, be it in Japan or elsewhere.

Nintendo would probably sell 10 million units of the Switch 2 at launch if they could meet demand. This little guy is going to be insane.

The Nintendo Switch 2 is very cheap in Japan, so no surprise there. And I think most people expect prices to go up rather than down, leading to some extreme demand.

For comparison, the Nintendo Switch OLED is 38,000 yen for a 1.5 year old console. For only 1万 and 2千 more, you can get a Nintendo Switch 2.

I bought the PS5 for 60,000 yen, a 5 year old console. They increased the price to 80,000 yen.

PS5 Pro is 120,000 yen, a console launched a few months ago. You could buy 2 Nintendo Switch 2s, one for you and a friend!

In Japan i predict that Switch 2 lifetime sales will overtake PS5 lifetime sales incredibly quickly. Sometime in 2026. Which would be insane.
