I'm surprised by this thread. I read so many Youtube comments and X posts complaining about the cost of living in some form or another and their money woes or countries economic situation and way more now in the last two weeks and increasing, esspecially in posts about Switch 2 and how people can't afford food let alone a luxury console. People even saying they know an economic contraction is coming and are fearful. I'm surprised It hasn't seeped in here, I thought this place was diverse in nationalities.

Anyway, I'm starting to get very worried. I went in to a cheap clothes shop here called Primark and I was in a month ago and the price increase is insane, I have never seen the place so expensive. I bought a pair of breathable fabric shoes a bit over a month ago for one job I do once a week and they went up to 18 euro from 10 a month back, I wish I had taken more note of other prices but that place is now a premium store by 2020 standards. I'd hate to see what the expensive stores are like. A sandwich now costs the price of a big freshly cooked dinner in a deli in 2020 and Covid already fucked that. A pack of biscuits is near 5 euro sometimes for brand name stuff. Feeding cats with the good stuff, Whiskas which they seem to be addicted to and I can't wean them off of it onto cheap stiff, is costing so fucking much. Electricity is just sucking money out the bank account into a black hole in the wall. I'm very worried and it just keeps getting worse and worse. I got used to the Covid bumps but this feels different, it feels like it's getting exponential... it feels anyway. I spent 130 euro on video games this week and I feel absolutely horrible about it like I commmited a crime or something. This is the world we live in now, huh. Fuck.

It might be diverse in nationalities, but I bet the income of most people on this site is well above the average. We're all invested in our hobbies otherwise why hang out / stick around on a specialized gaming website. Many here are multiple console owners and or own a fancy gaming PC. Many here either have extensive physical or digital collections, used to spending $1000+ a year on gaming.

Here it's mostly, wait for a sale, to mitigate the rising costs of living. Plus since it's the favorite hobby around here, it will be the last to cut back on.

I've been buying less meat rather than fewer games / systems. For example a package of 8 frozen burgers (1.13kg) has more than doubled in price here. It used to be $9 before the pandemic, currently $19 for the same thing. Chicken breasts from $12 to $26. Basically just buy what's on sale.

And yeah going out for dinner, we did that once since the pandemic. Prices are crazy. Almost $150 just for the 2 of us, only main course and a drink. At least you got to keep the video games you bought ;) We used to get fancy coffee and fast food regularly before the pandemic, now it feels like highway robbery. I guess the silver lining is that we eat a lot healthier nowadays lol. Subway we used to get 3 for $26, now it's almost $20 for one sandwich, I'll make my own.

I have not eaten meat for years, lol.

Around the Network

I have plenty of cash, but just because I can buy something, doesn't mean I should or would - I'd rather wait for sales. There's plenty of activities to keep me occupied with what little free time I get afterall.

Damn, if I had a family I don't know what I'd do. I'd have to give up gaming entirely.

You dont have to give up your hobbies, just need to adjust how you do them (like reduction of time in cosumption of said hobby).

I have my wife and my daughter - along with that my mom who lives with us (who I've been taking care of along with my dad until his passing last year).

For me, its mainly work that takes my time - I'm at the office 7am and get back home around 7pm lol....OT.

Things are much more expensive for sure - I'm not struggling per say as the people you mentioned but I've taken a bit of a loss over the past year due to multiple circumstances however I have a road map back to how we were back in 2022 and 2023 which I consider to be the best years of my life financially speaking.

Just gotta pay off all the travel debt I accumulated over the past 3 years - thats literally more than half of my debt right now and I'm expecting to pay it off completely by the end of the year.

As for Food prices and such, things are expensive for sure - what I bought for like $125 back in 2022 is now $250 so because of that we've cut down a few things.

-Eating out which we did quite frequently last year (due to the fact that my wife was pregnant and wanted to eat out lol) - we didnt eat at junk food places though, I'm talking about places like Fadi's Mediterranean Grill (Mediterranean place in Houston and Dallas) which isnt cheap or too expensive, more like middle ground.

-Decided to cut down on international traveling (we've been traveling to places like India, UAE's Dubai, UK, and France in the last 4 years)

-Spending cash on expensive hardware upgrades (except for a few exceptions) - thankfully this isnt too much of an issue because we've been doing upgrades in the last two years which will last us for several years.

-Buying QoL improvement stuff like Air purifiers, drones, extra night lights, massage devices, cameras, etc

-Cutting down on buying non-important stuff like wall posters/framed pictures, and decorations (we usually decorate every season - though we cutting that down mainly so our baby doesnt get a hold of the stuff lol)

-Not buying clothes from mall locations (Macys, JC Penny) like we did before - I've been personally shopping for clothes at my local Costco. Even if money does get better, I dont see myself going back to Macys for clothes, maybe a suit which I'm planning to get once I get my weight down but clothes for work and home I'm just gonna buy it from Costco.

-Carpooling together with one vehicle to work (though we've been doing that already for a while lol).

It also helps that we've been cutting down on other stuff like junk food, etc - Havent bought a bag of chips or anything like in over a year but thats more of a lifestyle/health choice than money saving (which it helps).
