God of War 1 3.23%

Horizon Zero Dawn 0 0%

Red Dead Redemption 0 0%

The Legend of Zelda 23 74.19%

The Witcher 0 0%

Uncharted 4 12.90%

This is a tough pick.

A couple options I haven't really played that much of - Legend of Zelda, Red Dead Redemption.

Uncharted and God of War are some of my absolute favorites. Uncharted 2 is in my top 3 games ever.

But I also feel like Batman Arkham is a big mention for me, because I feel like it is a very consistently good time, whereas I didn't like Uncharted 1/3 quite as much.

The Witcher is an RPG series no matter how you slice it. The first is arguably CRPG then Action RPG for the next two. It might actually be my choice if it counted but since it doesn't really fit I'm going Zelda.

Picked uncharted. I think the Legend of Zelda is a better series over all but uncharted is pretty much the blueprint on what I want to get out of genre.

Some of the Resident Evil games probably have their home in the same gene instead of horror.

Action adventure seems like it can pack in a lot of different games. Personally I would like to put a few games listed instead into the "Open world"-genre. I think it is mature enough to cut ties with the general action adventure games.

The problem is Open world isn't a genre by itself - BotW is open world, but No Man's Sky and Forza Horizon 5 are open world as well, and that's all they have in common.

I see your point. Might need another term for what people generally mean when they talk about open world games.

To me BotW has more in common with No mans sky than the OOT-formula games in the same series. Might be a hot take, and my personal feelings around these games is not important for the general discussion on what a specific genre should include or not include.

GOW and Zelda tie up for me in first place, with Uncharted and Horizon in second place.

Yeah, as I said in 2nd post, it's silly from EG to include Witcher in the poll, and "forget" GTA.

Voted for Zelda. It has the highest highs, but also some pretty low lows. I'd say Spider-Man is the most consistently good.

My vote is for Zelda. Although, I consider it an action RPG.

Zelda got my vote since it's my favorite IP of all time but I don't think of it or The Witcher as an "action/adventure" game like I do Tomb Raider or God of War. So based on that, if we were to take Zelda out of the poll I would have voted for the Uncharted series.

Oh interesting. I want to hear more.

I think of Zelda as the action-adventure franchise — particularly the entries between A Link to the Past and A Link Between Worlds — and consider Uncharted to be sort of borderline. What makes Zelda not a great fit, for you?

I guess I would go with Zelda being better suited for "adventure" and games like Uncharted I would label as "action" instead. It used to be much easier to label games between action (Castlevania), adventure (Zelda) and RPG (Final Fantasy) but these days there is so much action in many RPGs and action games have a lot of adventure in them... the lines blurred long ago. It's true the term "action/adventure" can certainly fit Zelda or Uncharted by pure definition, yet I think of those two series as very different game types/structures/experiences. Personally, I would categorize them separately but if you wanted to broaden the category to include both I could see that too.
