With the first sub 40k week in over half a year the impact of the Switch 2 continues and it fell behind last year in February or March as I expected. It'll still sell really well for at least the next several weeks though with it potentially getting a bit of a boost next week and the impact probably not increasing more till some time after the big April Direct.

And ouch on the PS5 declining the week before Wilds releases and despite having a new release at number 1. The PS4 increased the week before Worlds launched so that's not a good sign. It got a boost of 90k the week that released so the same as that would have the PS5 reach 100k but considering the very different circumstances to then it's safe to say the boost won't be that big but 50-70k seems doable. Also I wonder if this could be the last time the PS4 has a game chart in the top 2. That happening despite it being 11 years old is kinda wild.

(wasn’t NSW below 40k the prev wk as well?) also, not directed towards you Curl, but it is interesting how “revealing the successor would not impact sales figures” is all the sudden being proven wrong. Idk why ppl were so resistant to this concept? Revealing a successor will slash-and-burn predecessor figures...that’s almost always been the case. Didn’t happen for 3DS->NSW nor GBA->DS, but that’s because Nintendo didn’t market them as successors, but rather “third pillars”.

Doubt it has much to do with the reveal but more with with the slower software releases and the fact that at 35m in the region the platform has reached the point where every sale is essentially a new regional milestone, the mentioned platforms also had successors earlier in their life compared to Switch which has gone eight years which is longer than any of those platforms total run in general with the exception of the 3DS which had an eight year run so the was still sizable sales to still be gained weekly.

You would expect that considering that bundles are releasing this week with the game and from now until March 13th, the PS5 will have a 7k yen reduction for each model, except the Pro.

That would help explain it but what did they do for Worlds?

They did a PS4 pro LE MHW bundle that released in December 2017 selling only around 30k of them for a total of 90k units for the PS4 family on that week.

On MHW launch week, the PS4 sold a total of 140k units

Saw this the other day; one of Japan's biggest gaming retailer is starting a PS5 rental service, where you can get 8 days with the console for $6.56 USD, presumably for folks who wanna play a new PS5 game without committing to a full purchase

Much like other video game retailers like COMG!, GEO is struggling to keep stores open. I can't imagine this helps them much. Maybe Switch 2 gives them a boost.

Interesting. For Sony this would mean a sale. Sold to the retailer.

Yeah I feel like the whole retail gaming industry in Japan must be desperate for Switch 2, since PS owners hardly buy physical games any more and the Switch is winding down. A lot of Japanese devs must also be keen for a system that can handle modern games and which Japanese gamers actually care about.
