Forums - Sales Discussion - IDC estimate Steam Deck has sold ~4 million units, total handheld PC market 6 million

Publishers are desperate to prop up PC gaming, every major company does everything they can to placate Valve and their Steam deck, with a 3 million strong user base, while they often laugh away questions if they should port their games to the soon to be 160 million units selling Switch. The reason why is simple; Publishers want all digital sales, while Nintendo consoles have high level of physical unit sales of games, so publishers are desperate to try to turn everyone into digital only Steam users, over the traditional Nintendo physical retail business model.

I don't buy this. Switch gets digital only releases all the time. Publishers tend to skip Switch because of the under powered hardware, not because they want to skip releasing physical. If the Switch had the power of even last gen hardware, more games would have come to the platform. That's the trade off Nintendo makes with hardware and it tends to pay off. No need to point fingers at other platforms. Steamdeck is an extension of Steam so it's easy to port and has a sizeable hardware advantage over the Switch.

Absolutely great, as Valve is sellling this direct, and not at retail. Love my SteamDeck and will absolutely purchase a Deck 2
