Forums - Gaming Discussion - Why are core gamers buying wiis even 360 and ps3 have price cut

Um, why shouldn't core gamers buy a wii? I like the games on it, so I bought one.
I've had a great time with Mario Galaxy and Godfather, and have played hours of Mario Strikers Charged and Brawl with friends.

RE:UC is great to play with my brother when we want to hunt down some zombies and Battalion Wars was fun when I just wanted to blow stuff up.

Heck, I've still got Zack & Wiki in its wrapping and have unfortunately not bought No More Heroes or Fire Emblem yet, despite wanting to play them desparately. As a core gamer, the wii has games that I like to play and will, why not get it?

Core gamer doesn't equate to "zomg I love FPS and pretty graphics!" Everyone has their own preferences

Ok, sorry about that. Even with shovelware coming out on the Wii, why does it keep selling? 2 million software is sold a week, I know that even Wii Sports can't be produced 2 million times in a week. With that attach rate, the gamers who make up such a large sum of weekly sales are the core gamers. Like what everyone says here, only the casual gamer buys 1 or 2 games in an entire year. So why the 2 million?

I fixed it already sorry if no one understands it first

---Edit by Montana: I fixed it again. Now it should be much more legible.

Who said core gamers were buying the Wii? I would argue that non-gamers are buying the Wii, ie people who never played games before the Wii came out.

I think to most hardcore gamers, the Wii is about as appealing as the Gamecube and we all know how well that did. If the Wiimote doesn't rock your boat what's different?

SMG = Sunshine

Brawl = Melee

MP3: Corruption = MP2: Echoes

Mario Kart = Double Dash

Twilight Princess = ...Twilight Princess

I guess you could say the same for the PS3

Final Fantasy XIII = Final Fantasy X

DMC4 = DMC3

MGS4 = MGS2

etc...

But the difference is the PS3 took a significant step forward and the PS2 was successful so it would make sense for it to sell anyway.

 It keeps selling because shovelware helps sales of consoles recently.  Shovelware helped PS and PS2 win.  Now, it is helping Wii win.  A lot of games sell on the Wii because a lot of systems sell and those people want games.

well why not buy a wii?

In past generations (with mostly core gamers if all casuals are wii driven), the attach rate for games was between 5-9.
why wouldn't
_SMG (platform)
_MP3 (fps)
_Zelda (action adventure)
_Brawl (fighting)
_fire emblem (SRPG)
_MKWii (racing)
_Paper Mario (RPG)
be enough for your core gamers? that is 7 games you are sure to like if you already know nintendo.
Also considering the bad GC sales, you can double that number of available great first party games for core gamers that did not have the GC.

that's the classical Nintendo core gamers wishlist..

Shovelware only matters if you buy it. The NES, SNES, PS1 and PS2 all had gobs of shovelware too. Why? They were the winning consoles of their generations, and thus got more development, especially from lazy companies only interested in the quick buck.

The question is does the Wii have any quality software? I'd say it does, enough to satisfy the majority of gamers who buy/play maybe one or two games a month.

Don't argue with him. He's hardcore.

For gamers, the Wii has a lot of quality exclusives to consider. According to metacritic, the Wii has 20 exclusives at 75% or higher compared to 19 for the 360 and 14 for the PS3 (not counting any download services like VC or Arcade). It's gaining even more exclusives now that developers are starting to put more focus on the Wii. By the end of this gen, it should have the largest library of console exclusives by a decent margin.

A lot of the time games will be multi-platform between the 360 and PS3. That makes a Wii+360 or Wii+PS3 the perfect combination for gamers. You have the Wii for its larger number of exclusives, and the HD console for its multi-platform games + smaller number of exclusives.

The Wii's success is due to disruption. Basically, they are changing values of gaming consoles so that the Wii is best console to promote those values.

Essentially, Nintendo wants improved interface + social gaming to be the big features of games. The X360 and PS3 have better graphics and promote solo games ("epic" games.) But Nintendo has convinced people that graphics and solo play no longer matter.

Back in the PS2 days, graphics and solo play were important. So people bought it. The XBox and Gamecube were also designed for graphics and solo play. But by the time the Gamecube and XBox arrived the PS2 couldn't be stopped.

In business, this process is called disruption and has occured in many industries over the years. Sean Malstrom wrote up a really good (but really long) article about disruption in multiple industries and how Nintendo is doing it. If you have some spare time, take a good look:

There is no such thing as a console war. This is the first step to game design.
