Forums - Sony Discussion - Rumor: Sony to acquire Kadokawa Corporation

Weird seeing Sony people on various forums excited for this, given Sony's recent record with acquisitions and the years of bitching we have heard about how Sony is mismanaging the one FromSoft IP they own (Bloodborne). Now they'd own all of them.

edit, maybe they own Demon's Souls too, idk

There's a lot of speculation that there is some sort of agreement with bloodbornefromsoft that only Fromsoft is allowed to touch that game. Like you said everyone wants a remaster and Sony knows it yet they remaster everything but that game seems very weird. On top of that miyazaki has claimed that Bloodborne is his favorite title so it's not crazy to think he would have requested that no one touches it but him.

They also own Demon Souls.

As far as mismanaging acquisitions I agree. Difference here is that Bungie has been mismanaged by every single company that's owned them. The concord acquisition was clearly a mess both of these acquisitions were far outside Sony's norm for working with companies first.  From soft has made three different titles for Sony at this point all of them very successful and highly praised much different situation here.

I don't want this to happen but apparently the company is in trouble and someone is going to take over that company one way or another.

Speculation time!

Kakao Entertainment is making moves on Kadokawa, buying up shares like a savvy shopper eyeing a Black Friday deal. Rumor has it that Kakao might be gearing up for a corporate romance or a takeover, depending on how you frame it. This has likely sent Kadokawa scrambling for backup, potentially knocking on Sony’s door with a "Hey, remember our alliance? We might need to level up our partnership."

Sony, already holding a modest slice of Kadokawa's pie, has been Kadokawa’s buddy in crime for decades, helping them push anime and gaming magic to global markets.

It's like a high-stakes love triangle.

Yep... its like a hostile takeover (its called right?).

I think this changes things abit, if they themselves approached Sony, and asked to be brougt in under the umbrella.
Thats very differnt from sony just being out to become some mega manga holder monopoly.

Also this way, a japanese company stays in japanese hands.
Rather than go to some Chinese/Korean company, that might make drastic changes for profits ect.

Agreed I personally don't think Sony would want to do it otherwise. They already get all Fromsoft games and have a good relationship with them no need to purchase them at all.

The anime/magna stuff would be good for them but I'm not sure Sony would care enough to actually want to purchase them. Sony has been known to help out other Japanese companies when they need it so if that's what they are doing here not to surprising.

I'm not sure how true the Kakao rumor is. They did own a lot 3 years ago.

But seemingly downsized their investments 2 years ago.

There are some "debunks", but I notice the data they're using are older than the data where the claim came from.

I'm not sure how much credence the original claim should be given though. As far as I know, it's from a twitter account (who may or may not know what they're talking about).

I'm not sure overall. It's plausible it's true. It's also plausible that it's a claim that spread to make people feel better about it.

RIP From Software, my favourite developer of the last 15 years, by far. We had a good run, nothing is forever unfortunately.

Lol.

They will be fine.

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/newsletters/2024-11-26/sony-s-pursuit-of-kadokawa-anime-looks-like-a-great-takeover-idea

"They’ve been testing the waters for a potential combination for years, but never quite resolved differences over the degree of commitment. Tokyo-based Kadokawa wants its city neighbor to buy it entirely or not at all, while Sony has long sought to surgically extract assets related to anime and video games.

The fact the two are now at a formal stage of negotiation is very encouraging. Both sides might actually be ready to get serious and thrash out a deal."

Let's hope Kadokowa says no or Tencent outbids Sony

Please excuse my (probally) poor grammar

I'm against such consolidation but regarding From Software themselves it would probably be good of them, they would have way more money, better tech and tools available and very likely enjoy the same or even more freedom that they have right now.

Sony has some of the very best studios in the world doing mostly what they want.

They even gave away for free one of their very best engines to Kojima to develop his games because they like and respect him (and obviously because of the Death Stranding deal, which they even sold back to him now too).

Bloodborne is the most beloved Soulslike game and it's a partnership betweeen Japan Studios and From Software.
