PC Engine CD/TurboGrax-1 CD. The very first system with the ability to play games on CD and guess what. It was amazing. A lot of the system's best games are on it. From Ys. To Cosmic Fantasy. Castlevania Rondo of Blood. A ton of amazing shmups. With CD-quality music. Voice acting (hit and miss but was there) The music esp was fantastic. That Ys intro still gives me chills. SEGA CD had some great stuff and gets a worse rep than it deserves but SCD did not hold a candle to how amazing the PCECD add-on was.

Can you provide me with a full list of english friendly PCECD games? I'm getting a PCE in a few months and might get the CD add-on.

Probably better directed at the subreddit. I'm not an expert. Aside from the obvious of things like fighting games and shmups maybe puzzle games.

I'm going to nominate Sega CD. It was poorly marketed but is secretly an amazing add-on. Some highlights of the system in no particular order...

1. Popful Mail (Side Scroller/RPG)
2. Lunar (JRPG)
3. Lunar 2 (JRPG)
4. Snatcher (Legendary Kojima game)
5. Samurai Shodown (A great port of the arcade hit! Blows the SNES/Genesis version away.)
6. Fatal Fury Special (See Above)
7. Panic! (Hilarious point n click adventure.)
8. Silpheed (Shmup)
9. Dark Wizard (SRPG)
10. Android Assault (Shmup)
11. Sonic CD
12. Keio Flying Squadron (Shmup)
13. Robo-Aleste (Shmup)
14. Rise of the Dragon (Story based point n click game?)
15. Final Fight CD (Beat em' Up)
16. Lords of Thunder (Shmup)
17. Shining Force CD (SRPG)
18. Soulstar (Shmup with great 3D graphics)
19. Terminator (Platformer. Not a port.)
20. Revengers of Vengeance (RPG/Shmup/Fighter?)
21. Dungeon Explorer (Not related to the PCE game. Not a port. Not a sequel.)
22. Secret of Monkey Island
23. Heart of the Alien/Another World (Compilation of two classics)

SEGA CD version of Lords of Thunder OST is in my top 4 of all time. Also SEGA CD version of the Snatcher OST has my fave version of my fave gaming song ever. Neo Kobe City.

Might take a look at the Wikipedia page, as there are several CD-ROM versions, not that you get one that wouldn't work with your drive:

The best would probably be the Gameboy player for Gamecube. In one fell swoop, a player suddenly had a system that could play four console's (three handhelds and one home) worth of games... and without having to re-buy them! lol

But my favorite will always be the Sega CD. I know how people felt about it, and continue to feel about it, but I got one when I was young and they were new and to this day, nothing has managed to immerse me in a game quite like those FMV games. When I played Night Trap, I genuinely felt as if I were there, attempting to save those girls. It was really something.

The Link Cable hands down. Nowadays it may not seem like a big deal... But back then, being able to connect your Gameboy with your friend's? Trading Pokémon? Fighting each other? Going "back in time" and trade with RBY from GSC? It was like goddamn magic! It not only enhanced the games immensely, they magnified the social aspect of Pokémon to insane levels.

For me it was Super RC Pro-Am, long before Pokémon. But yeah, that was a great peripheral. As you pointed out, instrumental in the success of the sleeper hit/killer ap that was the original Pokémon.

I agree, it was an underachiever.

I'm gonna nominate Wii Motion Plus.

The extra precision and fidelity of control it offered enabled some really awesome experiences like Skyward Sword, Wii Sports Resort, and Red Steel 2.

I did my own research with the help of some obscure fan sites that I won't mention. PCCD is not easy to collect for and not exactly region free. It's complicated. Unless you are crazy like me, just get a Turbo Multicard and download these...

  1. Avenger

  2. CD Denjin (Air Zonk Game)

  3. Cotton Fantastic Night Dreams

  4. Dracula X

  5. Dragonslayer Legend of Heroes

  6. Dungeon Explorer 2

  7. Dynastic Hero

  8. Fantasy Soldier 2

  9. Gate of Thunder

  10. Ginga Fukei Densetsu Sapphire

  11. Kaiso Chojin 3 Shubibinman 3

  12. Lords of Thunder

  13. Wonder Boy III Monster Lair

  14. Pop n' Magic

  15. Prince of Persia

  16. Ranma ½ Dato Ganso Musabetsu Kakuto Ryu

  17. Seirei Shsnshi Spriggan

  18. Star Parioder

  19. Super Raiden

  20. Vasteel

  21. Winds of Thunder

  22. Ys Book I and II

  23. Ys III Wanderers from Ys

P.S. When I say it's not easy to collect for I mean it's Sega Saturn levels of expensiveness. Anyone complaining about SNES or Genesis game prices, or even PS1 has no idea. Add in that many CD games need a corresponding RAM cart and it becomes even harder. Now add in that region unlocking a Turbo CD is hard. Finally Turbo CD is a POS system that is prone to breaking all the time. Trust me. You do not want to actually start up a collection lol.
