PS5 Ships 65.5 Million Units as of September 2024

Sony Interactive Entertainment in its financial results announced it has shipped 65.5 million PlayStation 5 consoles as of September 30, 2024.

With 65.5 million PlayStation 5 consoles shipped through the end of June that means 3.8 million units were shipped from July to September. This is down 1.1 million (-22.45%) from the same quarter in 2023 when 4.9 million units were shipped.

For reference, the PlayStation 4 had shipped 4.2 million units in the same quarter for a lifetime total of 67.7 million units shipped as of September 30, 2017. This puts the PS5 behind shipped PS4 units by 2.2 million units.

There were a total of 77.7 million games sold on the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 for the quarter. This is up 10.1 million from 67.6 million during the same period a year earlier. Digital sales accounted for 70 percent of software sales.

There were 5.3 million first-party games sold across the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4. This is up 0.6 million from 4.7 million a year ago.

There were 116 million monthly active users on the PlayStation Network, an increase of nine million from 107 million a year ago. Sony did not disclose the number of PlayStation Plus subscribers. It was at 47.4 million at the end of March 2023.

Sony's Game & Network Services Segment for the quarter ending September 30, 2024, reported revenue increased 244.5 billion yen ($1.60 billion) year-over-year to 2,973.4 billion yen ($19.46 billion), while operating income increased 142.0 billion yen ($0.93 billion) to 389.3 billion yen ($2.55 billion).

The 2.2m behind is slightly worrying..... I hope there is room for price cuts at some point in this gen.

For anyone wondering I adjusted up our PS5 estimates a bit based on Sony's latest shipment data. We now have at it 62.33M at the end of September with the gap growing from 2.72M at the end of June to 3.17M at the end of September as Sony starts to stockpile more consoles for the holidays.

More adjustments might happen tomorrow. I'm quite tired and will take a look at it in the morning when I'm not tired as it is 2am here and talk with Machina to see what he thinks.

Really strong quarter for hardware sales.

I'm liking Sony's chances of reaching the 18M forecast. They need around 8M shipped for the holidays which is very achievable.

a very strong quarter. My prediction is correct, the ps5 should end the year with more than 68 million units sold, the launch of the ps5 pro, and those refurbished ps5 sold cheaper will help a lot, not to mention call of duty black ops 6 which will give it a boost. It looks like next year will be much better in terms of first party for Sony

Some interesting tidbits:

- Sony's profit margins went from 5% last year to 13% this year

- Astro Bot sold through 1.5M as of Nov 3rd, but 37% of buyers didn't purchase any other first party game, for the last two years. It looks like Astro is tapping into a new audience, similar to GT7 or Helldivers 2 but on a smaller scale

- Sony noted improved hardware profitability as one of the reasons for operating income being up YoY

Nice quarter. Q3 could be 8 to 8.5 million with a slight boost from the Pro.

With PS5 Pro just releasing, it will be a long gen. So it is possible, maybe with GTA release.

Hardware sales are down 1.1million year over year for the quarter but last years Q2 was Extremely strong.
PS5 Versus PS4

For the 2nd quarter of the 4th full fiscal year (orange) the 3.8 million the PS5 shipped is 0.4 million down on PS4's 4.2 million and after 16 quarters the PS5 totals 65.5 million compared to 67.7 million for the PS4. This means launch aligned the PS5 is 2.2 million behind PS4.

PS5 having an extra year on the market, that isn't disrupted by a global pandemic, is enough to have it outsell the PS4's lifetime.

That's before a potential price cut next year with GTA6 and GoY.
