I usually get rid of discs when I get a new one that's a pretty clear upgrade. Sometimes that is tricky because it's not always a clear upgrade.

I really want to get rid of my Columbo DVD set, the first half of the Kino Lorber set is pretty great, but the second half wasn't released in the correct aspect ratio.

The movie I have the most copies of though is Lion King, somewhat accidentally. 1 DVD, 3 blu-rays, and 1 4k.

I got a set that had the 2019 remake and 1994 original in a single case with both the blu-ray and DVD.

Was completely convinced I never had it, so I bought the 4k+blu-ray for cheap.

Then I got a cheap import set that had all 3 original Lion King movies for like $7 on blu-ray.

I would like to get rid of a couple copies, but I don't like breaking up the set, especially without a new case to put stuff in.

Had the original Star Wars Trilogy on VHS twice. Wore out a couple of tapes. Then got on DVD. Then they got remastered and extra scenes put in. So I bought them again on DVD. Then they came to blu ray and I bought them a fifth time. Independence Day and Toy Story came in 2nd with 4 purchases. Same thing wore out a VHS copy on each and then went to DVD and then to blu ray.

edit: I may be misremembering the DVDs on Star wars.  The DVD release may already of had the remastered version at launch.

...to avoid getting banned for inactivity, I may have to resort to comments that are of a lower overall quality and or beneath my moral standards.

Most copies: Princess Mononoke of course.

I bought the first version on DVD in Europe, then another on this side of the pond.

They're actually the same version as I imported the NTSC version in Europe, only the side of the box is slightly different. It was on blowout sale when Blockbuster closed its doors, extra copy just in case lol.

Then I imported the first Blu-Ray version from Hong Kong, English subs but no dub.

Later the Disney version came out so I added that as it fits in with the rest of my Ghibli collection

And a few years ago I added the limited Steelbook edition

That one is still factory sealed, I mostly watch the Hong Kong version.

Still waiting for a 4K version to arrive on 4K Blu-ray here, "exclusively in IMAX" for now.

Does anyone have any big wants for physical media - stuff that might not get released?

There were a lot movies in the last few years, which were shown in 3D in the cinemas, but probably won't be released on Blu-ray 3D (at least in Europe):

2019:

  • Ralph Breaks the Internet
  • Wonder Park
  • X-Men: Dark Phoenix
  • Men in Black International
  • Spies in Disguise

2020:

  • Soul
  • Scooby!

2021:

  • Godzilla vs. Kong
  • Black Widow (only released in Japan, limited MovieNEX edition)
  • Jungle Cruise
  • The Suicide Squad
  • Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (only released in Japan, limited MovieNEX edition)
  • James Bond 007 - No Time to Die
  • Venom: Let there be Carnage
  • Ron's Gone Wrong
  • The Eternals (only released in Japan, limited MovieNEX edition)
  • Encanto
  • Spider-Man: No Way Home

2022:

  • Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (only released in Japan, limited MovieNEX edition)
  • Lightyear
  • Thor: Love and Thunder (only released in Japan, limited MovieNEX edition)
  • Black Adam
  • Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (only released in Japan, limited MovieNEX edition)
  • Strange World
  • Puss in Boots: The Last Wish

2023:

  • The Amazing Maurice
  • Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (only released in Japan, limited MovieNEX edition)
  • Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (only released in Japan, limited MovieNEX edition)
  • Fast X
  • The Little Mermaid
  • Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse
  • Transformers: Rise of the Beasts
  • Elemental
  • Haunted Mansion
  • Meg 2: The Trench
  • Trolls 3: Band Together
  • The Marvels (only released in Japan, limited MovieNEX edition)
  • Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom

2024:

  • Kung-Fu Panda 4
  • Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire
  • The Garfield Movie
  • Inside Out 2
  • Despicable Me 4 (maybe a future "Turbine" release like Minions 2)
  • Deadpool & Wolverine
  • The Wild Robot
  • Mufasa: The Lion King

2025:

  • Captain America: Brave New World
  • Fantastic Four
  • Moana (Live Action)

Including import costs (shipping, tariffs) the 9 Marvel "MovieNEX" movies (with 4K UHD + Blu-ray 3D) would cost around €600 - €700 on eBay:

The individual titles are traded for ~100 bucks each (import costs included).

Regional releases are getting problematic, it doesn't seem The Expanse S5/S6 will ever get a Canadian release. So the only option is import from the States at inflated costs. CAD 100 (excl tax and shipping) to import S5 and S6 from the states.

Actually China is starting to catch on as full series sets now seem to ship from China... CAD 68.50 to get Season 1-6 shipped from 'zhangenhao' on 'blu-ray audio'. It sounds like a scam and can take forever to get here. Why labeled as blu-ray audio.

This is getting standard now when I go to look for movies on Amazon nowadays. Most are from importcds and other 3rd party resellers that import from the USA. No more Canadian releases, thus inflated costs, tarifs, extra shipping, and if you're unlucky get hit by a ridiculous brokerage fee from DHL/UPS when send from the USA directly.

So I buy less than 1/10th of the movies / series I used to buy. $50+ for a movie, it needs to be real special for that.
Thus sticking to the big releases like Wicked, Ne Zha among my latests purchases. Those still get released here.

Up to 2005 I imported most of my RC1 DVDs from Canada, because they were so cheap at "DVD Soon". I even imported my PSP from there in April 2005... it was €100 cheaper than in Germany and it arrived many months before the European launch.

Later that year, some DVD orders didn't arrive anymore (got my money back with help of my credit card company) and in December 2005 they've gone bankrupt: https://www.avforums.com/threads/dvdsoon-has-expired.273124/

Off the top of my head...
- original Rurouni Kenshin anime on blu-ray
- Gantz O NA release
- Speed Racer live action 4K

Some countries are really getting the short end of the stick.

I think Australia is in really bad shape for physical media.

US is better off than a lot.

I somewhat panic bought the Dragon Ball Z anime from UK, because it's the cheapest way to get the 4:3 set, and was worried about how tariffs were going to impact it.

Up till 2002 I imported my DVDs from the UK and USA as I still lived in Europe. It was a lot cheaper then than now importing from the USA to Canada. Most of the time customs didn't even bother to add import fees and no tax on buying from the US.

The Expanse S6 is $21.33 (CAD 29.50) on Amazon.com, CAD 54.51 (ships from 3rd party reseller) on Amazon.ca, rip off.
I would consider buying from the US but not since Trump declared war on us, which also rules out these resellers as you're still buying from the US essentially.

Over 40 million people here, but most companies can't be bothered anymore to put out a Canadian release. (which needs a bilingual sleeve at least)
