Barring fundamental changes in their main businesses, Nintendo and Microsoft are always going to be profitable though. Sony used to always profit as well, but the company is losing to competitors in alot of core businesses and has been hurt by the economy.

but is not just profit that concerns microsoft, it perception in the overall market. for the first time in a long time MS is being labeled as a sell stock based on the failure of getting corporations to switch to Vista, The continued blunders in the web search/ad trade , the lack of penetration with its mobile devices, and perceived poor development of mobile OS support. If this starts to effect stock seriously (it has not yet) it could hinder MS development in the gaming area, you point out in your next post you feel MS is no longer willing to sacrifice for the entertainment arm, but the entertainment are will continue to have huge and exasperatingly huge losses. Most of these losses will be tied up in the pushes to advance mobile OS which though growing in overall phone base, is not  the dominant formate MS needs it to be. the surfaces initiative which if you watch its evolution its clear they have dumped ridiculous amount of money into it with no real return yet, though they are working to integrate it into windows 7. the windows store budget will come out of here too and thats going to be a sinkhole for a bit.

basically MS needs windows 7 launch to exceed expectations, to keep share holders happy if that is done they can continue to drop tones of money into the entertainment division without investors demanding cuts or demanding to know whats going on line item there. cause they will be using this division again to hide the true cost of all of their projects not relating to core business. heck we could have the 360 and its line making record profit and never know about it .... though i do feel MS would brag about that

I dont like quoting my self, but basically every bad thing i thought would be reveled by ms was, though i was surprised the actually came out and said specifically gaming revenues were only down 1% yoy

this does place a gloom picture over the year, MS needs to spurs more sales and give another boost to live, the question is are they willing to suffer one more year before trying a relaunch of the console with natal (i still feel natal is doomed to failure unless it is heavily subsidized given out with every console, and offered as a a pack-in with must have games). come on MS give good value added bonus to drive sales, and release a larger HD for the love of god

Gaming revenue down 1% is actually a good result.
Don't forget the 360 is 100$ cheaper than last year.
So basically they lost a lot of hardware revenue due to the price cut but software revenue must have increased and made up for it...

PS3-Xbox360 gap : 1.5 millions and going up in PS3 favor !

PS3-Wii gap : 20 millions and going down !

Huh? The price cut on the Arcade was $80.

Ail and others - Microsoft said its gaming revenue was down 12% from the same quarter in 2008. They saw much larger drops in other businesses (Zune, etc) within the division)  but given the 360 costs less in Apr-Jun 09 than in Apr-June 08, and that they sold less, they said the decrease in hw revenue was 25%, partially offset by increased game revenues.

How much of that $1.8B R+D budget is directly applicable to the Xbox 360? If even a third isn't then the profit for the year could be much higher than the division results indicate for the platform assuming all else is equal.

yea after looking at all the numbers it looks like the 360 was profitable. Non-gaming revenue was down 42%, far more than gaming related. Won't be long before the Sony gaming division will be as hard to decipher as this one.

currently playing: Skyward Sword, Mario Sunshine, Xenoblade Chronicles X

Microsoft said that in the fourth quarter Xbox 360 and PC game revenue decreased 12 % to $110 million “primarily as a result of decreased Xbox 360 console sales and decreased revenue per Xbox 360 console due to price reductions during the past 12 months, partially offset by increased Xbox Live revenue.”

so the increased software meant MS made money on 360 overall?
