if that's not trolling I don't know what is,,,
anyways GC and N64 both sold worst than PS3 and nintendo is still around,,,,
also the generation has just started,,only a year and five months into the generation,,so before you jump to conclusion, wait for sony to play their cards(dropping the price only 100 dollars doubled their sales,,so who knows how another price cut will help them)

Did Sony bring gaming to the masses? Did they improve the gaming market? Did they change the way video games are percieved? The answear of course is yes
| SlorgNet said: Most people don't realize just how crafty Sony's strategy has been. Remember, this is the only company in the world which defeated Nintendo at its own game - broke the Big N's near-monopoly over the game industry with the first Playstation, partly because it played cheaper CD discs instead of expensive cartridges. At the time, Sony's success was more accidental than planned, but the success of the PS2 and PS3 (yes, it's selling well) was no accident at all. The PS2 was designed with a built-in DVD player, and was exactly the size and shape necessary to fit into TV cabinets, with a price point to match, and had a ton of third-party support. This was risky, because the DVD market was just taking off in 2000, but it paid off. Sony then applied the lessons they learned to the PS3, the first true mass multicore device for consumers. They knew they couldn't just release PS2.5 and hope to survive against the 360 or whatever Nintendo came up with (they knew the House of Mario would be a ferocious competitor). Also, they had to be careful not to kill off the PS2 prematurely. Solution: design a beast of a machine, which handles all media with aplomb, has next-gen BluRay, online, a huge hard drive, wireless, etc. It's so powerful that they gave the PS3 lots of curves, so people wouldn't stack it on other AV equipment and stress it or cause it to overheat - there will be a sturdy, stackable slimline version by 2009, of course. This cost them short-term sales, especially in space-conscious Japan, but they needed a machine which could handle the media streams of 2010-2015. |
I can't agree with this ...
The success of most consoles has been because they were remarkably lucky to be released at the right time to capatalize on a void in the market, or they just happened to be the successor to the most popular console on the market. Basically, the NES dominated because it was the only console and the SNES followed up on the success of the NES because Nintendo didn't make any major mistakes; a void was created when Sega and Nintendo "melted down" with the Sega CD/32x/Saturn and Virtual Boy/N64, the Playstation filled the void and the PS2 followed up on its success; the Gameboy dominated because it was the only handheld, the GBA and Nintendo DS followed up on this success.
In this generation the PS3 and XBox 360 were designed to appeal to the "Core" gamer crowd which left a the majority of the market open for Nintendo ... Had Sony released the PS2.5 at a reasonable price they would have (easily) dominated the XBox 360 and limited the market for Nintendo to sell the Wii to.
I think it's very hard to measure the PS2's impact on the success of the PS3.
The PS2 Helps because....
-It cut's into competitors market share , it still sells.
-Gives the PS3 a huge potential fanbase (120 million PS2 owners)
-Gives the PS3 a larger libary ( BC Compatible PS3's anyway)
-Helped establish the "Playstation" Brand name , it basicly defiined Playsation.
-The amount of development resources Sony has aquired is imense , Sony have more 1st party development reosurces than MS and Nintndo (not comined)
Without the launch of the PS3
-Sony probbaly would have released the PS3 earlier
MAJOR MAJOR MAJOR POINT!!!!!LAUNCH DATES MATTER !!!!
-Sony wouldn't have apporached this gen so arrogantly.
have encouraged more developer support
Would have started with a lower Price Point
-The PS3 would apear to be newer and more original
Gamepad wouldn't look as un-original
A newer and more original look would have helped sales
I overall i'm not sure I think the chances of the PS3 being succesfull / no succesfull are kinda 50/50, very strong points each way.
i don't agrre with you;i think that ps3 now sells a because of the playstation name
I know the only reason I have considered a PS3 in my life is because of the great reputation Ps1 and 2 have with me. However, all that good will has been killed by a $400 price point and no Backwards Compatiblity unless you wanna spend $500.
Kickin' Those Games Old School. - 201 Beaten Games And Counting

PS3 would have been dead since 1 year if it was not a PS3
THAT IS OBVIOUS to me
Time to Work !
i partially agree, the ps3 is selling due in part to the success of the ps2 but also due in part to the success of the orignal playstation.
the ps1/psone was the first ever consolde to dethrone the mighty nintendo. it sold like crazy due to its cheap format and very wide selection and variety of games.
similarly, even though it was the least powerfull of the past generation, the ps2 still managed to keep its crown as king. how? by again, doing what it did the past generation, offer a truck load of games with again a very wide variety. ps2 was actually what help jump start the dvd into what it is now.
and now, the ps3 is selling even if it has a smaller liblary, even if it is freakingly expensive because it is a PLAYSTATION. and again, their banking on the ps3 to again jump start the interest for blu-ray. the bad news is, the games arent there yet but since its got the brand of a playstation, you can bet you ass that many a people will buy it thinking that the games are coming...(are they? no idea, but ffxiii, tekken6 and gt5 are all i need to warrant a purchase)
