Forums - Sony - Had Sony sold this many PS3 if PS2 hasn't been this successful.?

Yes i know its a stupid question... but i just want an opinion.. not want a proof here..

As i believe if PS2 had not been this gr8 success then PS3 at this moment would have sold less than 5 million at this moment..

Because

1 - very few games for it in relation to other consoles. According to VGC each console have following games count

(PS3: 144, Wii: 251, X360: 258)

2 - All multiplatform games on PS3 are either the worst than its on other platform or barely equal to them in quality and fps.

3 - AT THE CURRENT MOMENT PS3 has fewer exclusives then others and also less exclusives which are worth the system.

4 - and last but not the least it is the most expensive system out there.

So honestly i don't see a reason for some good sales of PS3 lately... even at 400 its quite an expensive console.. and the only logical reason i feel its selling so well is that it has a backing of PS2 sort of...

So wots ur take.

I don't think the PS3 would be as successful as it has been to this point if it wasn't for the PS2. You know all those comments to the effect of "Wow, how is Sony and/or PS3 doing that?" every other week or so despite Sony's alleged lack of games? Yeah, that's the PS2 talking. The Playstation brand is powerful.

Not to flame, but I think you're right. I mean, last gen they flaunted the fact that the PS2 was cheap AND powerful when it came out ($299). It also had a much better selection of games by this point in its' life. So I find it hard to believe that it didn't have SOME effect on PS3 sales.

Could I trouble you for some maple syrup to go with the plate of roffles you just served up?

"Ok, girl's trapped in the elevator, and the power's off.  I swear, if a zombie comes around the next corner..."

Well if it weren't for the PS2's success the PS3 wouldn't be the PS3 we know of today.

Sony wouldn't have been so arrogant about "millions of people will buy our system without games". They may not have even included Bluray as it was clear that adding BR really hurt them with the cost out of the gate.

Actually, I don't agree. While I believe it's true that Sony is doing a lot of riding on the Playstation brandname, I think the actual success of the PS2 specifically is, in reality, limiting the sales of the PS3.
If you don't feel like shelling out the $400 - $600 that the PS3 has cost, all you've need to do is get the PS2 and you've got immediate access to 90% of the Playstation library.

Most people don't realize just how crafty Sony's strategy has been. Remember, this is the only company in the world which defeated Nintendo at its own game - broke the Big N's near-monopoly over the game industry with the first Playstation, partly because it played cheaper CD discs instead of expensive cartridges. At the time, Sony's success was more accidental than planned, but the success of the PS2 and PS3 (yes, it's selling well) was no accident at all.

The PS2 was designed with a built-in DVD player, and was exactly the size and shape necessary to fit into TV cabinets, with a price point to match, and had a ton of third-party support. This was risky, because the DVD market was just taking off in 2000, but it paid off.

Sony then applied the lessons they learned to the PS3, the first true mass multicore device for consumers. They knew they couldn't just release PS2.5 and hope to survive against the 360 or whatever Nintendo came up with (they knew the House of Mario would be a ferocious competitor). Also, they had to be careful not to kill off the PS2 prematurely.

Solution: design a beast of a machine, which handles all media with aplomb, has next-gen BluRay, online, a huge hard drive, wireless, etc. It's so powerful that they gave the PS3 lots of curves, so people wouldn't stack it on other AV equipment and stress it or cause it to overheat - there will be a sturdy, stackable slimline version by 2009, of course. This cost them short-term sales, especially in space-conscious Japan, but they needed a machine which could handle the media streams of 2010-2015.

wait, so noobie HASN'T been banned yet?

The PS brand means bucketloads in EU so yes definitely wont have sold as much. Also, you see alot of PS3 fans arguing that PS2 owners will more likely become PS3 owners, so they are banking on the PS brand equity alot themselves.

I really hope that by 2010-2015 Sony won't be around with PS3... for their own good .... and ours
