Forums - Nintendo - BioWare: Is the Wii Actually Gaming?

Their BG games type were exactly what I wanted to do when I was younger, and they realized my dream. Well, mostly, as their games are actually not very story driven, they are more like sandbox games, where you can wander endlessly without ever finishing the game. JRPG are far more story driven than any WRPG, which is why I always prefer them to WRPG. So it's ironic to see Bioware talk about games only being defined by story, as their games surely would then not qualify as games. Their stories pale in comparison to most JRPG.

Except they're not.  BG2 was became non-linear just for a little while in Chapter 2 and was linear for the rest of the game.  It was just that there were boatload of sidequests you could do in that chapter.  BG2:ToB was completely linear from start to finish.

Somehow I doubt you actually remember much about the games.

@WoW: But doesn't work the other way around too? Shouldn't Bioware be critisizing when they have 100 years of history, is one of the industrys key players, employs more than 3000 people and is generating more than 3 billion in profit? On a side note, by your numbers, Biowares revenue per employee is around 42k (which means on the verge of extinction, unless this is quaterly revenue), while Nintendos profit per employee is more than 1M. In any case, this is not just about Nintendo, but the industry as a whole. It's the same as saying "Next-gen doesn't start before we say so" or "4D gaming" or any Sonys pre-PS3 PR BS. We are the only ones that make games, the stuff that others do is just something else. I do hope that that's not what he was meaning, although he said so.

Dunno about the numbers as I pulled them from wiki for a quick fact check (I couldn't remember who the third founder of Bioware was).

I think you're just bitter that he called the Wii a toy.  ^_^

Notice all these bitter people are PC devs first : Epic, Bioware. I'm sure there are others.
They all sound moronic and bitter. You bet they are, their business is being disrupted hard.
But what's sad is that they spit nonsense and excuses instead of trying to do sth about it.

No wonder I could never like or finish games from these devs, I'm just not in line with their mindset.
You'd think I would be closer to Bioware, as I was playing lots of AD&D. Actually, I place their story in the same league as the Seiken Densetsu ARPG. It's actually the same kind of stories (deep wise, length wise, content wise).
BG's story is poor, NWN's story is really poor, and BGII's story appears to be a bit better, but still really poor.
Now that I think of it, the Neverwinter Nights circular menu is a poor copy of Seiken Densetsu's one, which was way faster to use with a pad, than the one in NWN with a mouse.

Well, anyway, better laugh at all those people bashing the Wii. We're seeing the very effect of fear by those being disrupted, and they're running scared. If they did sth about it instead of whining, it wouldn't be so funny.

It's fine if you prefer linear stories, but jRPGs are not far more story driven than wRPGs, they simply use a more direct and concentrated approach: Linearity. Most wRPGs use more of a make-your-own story, which allows you to better interact with the gameworld and characters, and be possibly more immersive. They're just 2 different ways to present stories, but the non-linear way has more potential Imo.

And there's no bloody way jRPGs have better stories, No.Bloody.Way! Every jRPG has a Shitty story compared to Planescape: Torment. Fallout 1 has more grittiness, atmosphere and personality than every jRPG I've played. Baldur's Gate 2 portrays romance more naturally than Any jRPG so far.

But gaming isn't defined by story. Games are interactive. If you want a great story read a book or watch a film.

But come on, bioware have a vested interest in the games as storylines philosophy, so I don't blaim him for saying what he did.  Thankfully bioware make good games.

I think his reitteration is going to get 1080 for the level of spin.

I don't get why they say stuff without their PR guys there to coach them through it.

This isn't fair though, Camelot and Nintendo Osaka need to start talking about these devs systems of choice.

Thinking about it, Id be kind of mad if I thought Wii was going to fall flat in 2005 and invested 20 million in a title, with tuns of labor just to find out I bet on the wrong pony.

I'm Unamerica and you can too.
