Thought PS2 was discontinued in January 2013?

Yes, the ending production was at January 4, 2013 (worldwide).

But, as you can see from the quarterly reports, Sony included it with the PS3 throughout the 2012 financial year. It was only from 1 April 2013 that the PS2 was no longer included.

Although we have our differences, I have to agree with this explanation. Of course the validity of this image is still in question but I do speculate maybe someone leaked this image due to Jim Ryan's podcast. Of course this is could be a great fake as well with the 3D printing and even AI voices world we live in. Hard to believe anything in today's world.

I know production doesnt always mean sales (they could have thrown them out).... but.... I want to believe it might actually have just barely squeaked past 160m :p

It’s very possible that it did between 160-162m.

Final number without confirmation will very almost impossible to know.

We still seeing the usual “it sold because it was the cheapest DVD available” or the “it sold that well due to piracy” statements.

All in all, huge success for Sony with its 1.5+ Billion games sold.

Imo the ones who try to say that the ps2 having a dvd player and being the cheapest dvd player around at the time with the benefit of being able to play games and think this didn't help it sell is being delusional

Yes, it's well known that Nintendo fanboys are more credible than Jim Ryan, who's worked at Sony for several decades, so let's be serious :3

When Jim Ryan says something like this:

https://www.pushsquare.com/news/2023/05/jim-ryan-japanese-market-still-very-important-to-sony

...then not even PS fans are willing to believe him, because it's known that Sony has shut down most of its studios in Japan. So when this guy says "160m" in a podcast, then it shouldn't be taken as fact either, because the guy's ability and willingness to spin is on record.

Exact PS2 lifetime figures remain unknown and still fall in the same range as calculated many years ago. This is essentially non-news and also has no influence on any discussions regarding Switch vs. PS2 lifetime sales, because a rounded 160m figure has been the commonly acknowledged and accepted target all along. This means the point of contention regarding Ryan's comment in a podcast is not whether the PS2 reached 160m or not, but rather whether or not to trust Jim Ryan's words blindly.

Of course it's genuine.  They want their japanese games to be as successful as their western ones but if they didn't want japanese games then they would't have funded rise of the ronin or secured ff16 as exclusive.  People put too much stock  in what internal studios do relatie to sony's business point of view. Just like when everyone says they don't care about psvr 2 when sony would tell you that's absurd when they went through the effort to get resident evil as  exclusives to psvr 2.

The reddit user who posted the photo says that a friend sent it to him a few years ago, and that he no longer has access to the console. Is the last PS2 ever created really going to be in the hands of an anonymous collector, and he's going to sell it for cheap?

Coincidentally the photo comes out a few hours after the podcast commentary, it's clearly a fake that many want to believe as true.

Looks very fake with the clear text under the protective film while the "PlayStation"-text on the right side (under the PS2-logo) is much less readable.

Probably that fake was inspired by Shawn Levy's PSP posting a few months ago:

That still doesn't prove that it's fake, just as there's no proof that it's authentic. In both cases you can't say anything without solid proof.

There's always room for doubt, though.

We are supposed to use real numbers. If numbers from financial reports and/or sales tracking companies are not used, we move into a "make.believe" state where we accept as valid any supposed evidence that reinforces our belief, even if it is clearly seen to be tailor-made for it and clearly faker than a 3 euro note.

Your proof is only proof that there are people who make things up to reinforce their arguments on the internet.

No, it ain't a proof. But the circumstances of the photo appearance are more than dubious.

The person who uploaded the photo never mentioned the photo before in older discussions.
He never mentioned that a friend of him had such a unique collector's version of the last PS2.

Until the podcast with Jim Ryan a few das ago...

I also doubt, that the last produced PS1, PS2, PS3, PS4 will ever be available to buy by "normal" collectors.
They will probably either stay in the "Sony vault" or be given to high ranking Sony officials like Shawn Layden, which probably won't sell them away for a few hundred/thousand bucks to other collectors.

You can ignore this photo if you think it's fake and just take Jim Ryan's official statement when he says they've sold 160 million PS2s, no need to complicate your life.
