PS2’s 160 million sales was a phenomenal achievement. But the margin on it was terrible and the console suffered severe piracy issues. The cost of hitting that number was high for Sony

It's not just VGC. ZhugeEX dismissed Ryan's podcast comment all the same.
Legend11 correctly predicted that GTA IV will outsell Super Smash Bros. Brawl. I was wrong.

That probably isn't an authentic inscription. And it looks like it's on the peelable plastic, which can be done with a regular printer. What makes this hard to believe though is that despite it specifying units sold down to a single digit, no one seems to have seen others like this, or traced the source. |
Probably Photoshop.

And hopefully posted as a joke here, not as evidence.

Thought PS2 was discontinued in January 2013?

Yes, the ending production was at January 4, 2013 (worldwide).
But, as you can see from the quarterly reports, Sony included it with the PS3 throughout the 2012 financial year. It was only from 1 April 2013 that the PS2 was no longer included.

Cool if it's real, but looks a little photo chopped to me. The clarity of the writing compared to the how the other letters on the console have turned vague over time. In general the console looks liked it aged badly, except for the extra writing. That's a bit weird.

No reason to defend yourself Trunks, we know you do a stellar job! You have never given any reasons to question your integrity here. |

You and the team do a fantastic job, this is incredibly difficult to estimate the sell through/sold to consumers figures. You make a mistake and adjust accordingly. That is quite reasonable and very understandable. No need to let a 23 year old PS warrior get under your skin. Dude is mad that you dare question a company that reports "official" figures in casual podcast instead of the financial reports where lying would be a crime. Yes that's the company that should be beyond approach 😆. |
I o appreciate all the responses! Sorry for the delay. It is the weekend and I haven't been on my PC much.
I do see the Reddit post with the PS2 sales number. Sadly, there is no link to where the person got it and it looks a bit fake. Now if it was someone who works or worked at PlayStation who posted it that would be one thing. Shawn Layden posting his PSP with the exact number of units produced was great to see.

Hey, @trunkswd Just from curiosity, what was the reason and how did you get to the former number used on the site for years, for the PS2 - 157.68M |
That figure was done before I took over doing the hardware estimates and until Bandorr created a new tool for me, I had no way of adjusting figures for any platform from before the 7th generation as those are separated from any platform we've done weekly estimates for. So any platform from before the 7th generation we can only fill in the lifetime sales, while any platform from the 7th generation and newer I can adjust each week of sales down to more specific countries/regions.
As for where the 157.68M figure came from? I honestly I have no idea.
I should add Machina, our editor-in-chief, does help me with the estimates. Especially with double checking my work to make sure all the math adds up or when making adjustments when new data comes in.
Since the new tool was created, if you look here https://www.vgchartz.com/charts/platform_totals/Hardware.php/ , you will see a lot of platforms have been added with any bit of available sales figures. Machina is the one who did the research to find those sales numbers. If anyone does find hardware or software sales we are missing you are welcome to let us know as we are just two people keeping things updated. I focus on the hardware, while Machina focuses on adding official software sales/shipment figures to the GameDB.
We have been discussing about potentially adding player totals to the individual GameDB pages as certain companies only give us player totals and no longer provide any sales numbers. Yes, mainly Microsoft/Xbox.
