Switch vs DS Sales Comparison in Japan - January 2024

This monthly series compares the aligned Japanese sales of the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo DS.

The DS launched in December 2004 in Japan and the Nintendo Switch launched in March 2017. Therefore, the normal holiday periods and the Japanese Golden Week holiday for the two consoles do not lineup.

January 2024 is the 83rd month that the Nintendo Switch has been available for in Japan. During the latest month, the Switch has outsold the DS by 271,437units when you align the launches.

In the last 12 months, the Switch has outsold the DS by 2.51 million units. The DS is currently ahead of the Switch by 0.74 million units.

The 83rd month for the Switch is January 2024, while for the DS it is October 2011. The Switch has sold 32.12 million units, while the DS sold 32.86 million units during the same timeframe. The DS sold current Switch sales in month 73.

The DS has sold 32.99 million units lifetime in Japan. The Switch is currently 0.87 million units behind the lifetime sales of the DS

PS5 vs PS4 Sales Comparison in Japan - January 2024

This monthly series compares the aligned Japanese sales of the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4.

The PlayStation 5 launched in November 2020 in Japan, while the PlayStation 4 launched in February 2014. This does mean the holiday periods for the two consoles do not lineup.

January 2024 is the 39th month the PlayStation 5 has been available for. In the latest month, the gap grew in favor of the PlayStation 5 when compared to the aligned launch of the PlayStation 4 by 128,566 units.

In the last 12 months, the PS5 has outsold the PS4 by 461,919 units. The PS5 is currently ahead by 335,583 units.

The 39th month for the PS5 in Japan is January 2024, while for the PS4 it is April 2017. The PS5 has sold 5.19 million units, while the PS4 sold 4.85 million units during the same timeframe. The PS4 sold current PS5 sales in month 42.

The PS4 crossed 5 million in month 41, 6 million in month 47, and 7 million in month 53. The PS4 has sold 9.67 million units to date. The PS5 is currently 4.48 million units behind the lifetime sales of the PS4 in Japan.

Xbox Series X|S vs Xbox 360 Sales Comparison in Japan - January 2024

This monthly series compares the aligned sales of the Xbox Series X|S and Xbox 360 in Japan, as well as looking at lifetime original Xbox sales and Xbox One sales.

The Xbox Series X|S launched in Japan in November 2020, while the Xbox 360 launched in Japan in December 2005. The original Xbox launched in Japan in February 2002 and the Xbox One in September 2014.

January 2024 is the 39th month the Xbox Series X|S has been available for in Japan. In the latest month, the gap grew in favor of the Xbox 360 when compared to the aligned launch of the Xbox Series X|S by 45,603 units.

In the last 12 months, the Xbox 360 has outsold the Xbox Series X|S by 243,340 units. The Xbox 360 is currently ahead by 423,424 units.

The Xbox Series X|S has sold 0.55 million units in 39 months, while the Xbox 360 sold 0.98 million units. Month 39 for the Xbox Series X|S is January 2024 and for the Xbox 360 is February 2009.

The Xbox 360 crossed one million units in month 40 and 1.5 million units in month 67. The Xbox 360 sold 1.66 million units lifetime. The Xbox Series X|S is 1.11 million units behind lifetime Xbox 360 sales.

This monthly series compares the aligned Europe sales of the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4.

The PlayStation 5 launched in November 2020, while the PlayStation 4 launched in November 2013. This does mean the holiday periods for the two consoles do lineup.

In the last 12 months, the PS5 has outsold the PS4 by 0.70 million units. The PS5 is currently behind the PS4 by 4.67 million units.

The PS5 has sold 17.90 million units in 39 months, while the PS4 sold 22.57 million units. Month 39 for the PS5 is January 2024 and for the PS4 is January 2017.

The PS4 crossed 30 million in month 51 and 40 million in month 72. The PS4 has sold 45.85 million units to date in Europe. The PS5 is 27.95 million units behind lifetime PS4 sales in Europe.

January 2024 is the 39th month the Xbox Series X|S has been available for. In the latest month, the gap grew in favor of the Xbox One when compared to the aligned launch of the Xbox Series X|S by 53,609 units.

In the last 12 months, the Xbox One has outsold the Xbox Series X|S by 0.53 million units. The Xbox Series X|S is currently behind the Xbox One by 0.57 million units.

The Xbox Series X|S has sold 7.45 million units in 39 months, while the Xbox One sold 8.02 million units. Month 38 for the Xbox Series X|S is December 2023 and for the Xbox One is December 2016.

The Xbox One crossed 10 million units sold in Europe in month 50, 12 million in month 62, and 14 million in month 76. The Xbox One sold 14.86 million units lifetime in Europe. The Xbox Series X|S is 7.41 million units behind lifetime Xbox One sales in Europe.

Personally, I think Microsoft will be lucky to sell near 13 million units in Europe by the end of its life.

In the last 12 months, the PS5 has outsold the PS4 by 1.59 million units. The PS5 is currently ahead of the PS4 by 1.25 million units.

The PS5 has sold 19.06 million units in 38 months, while the PS4 sold 17.81 million units. Month 39 for the PS5 is January 2024 and for the PS4 is January 2017.

The PS4 crossed 20 million in month 47, 25 million in month 57, and 30 million in month 71. The PS4 has sold 34.91 million units to date in the US. The PS5 is 15.85 million units behind lifetime PS4 sales in the US.

The PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S both launched in November 2020. The Xbox Series X|S launched in the US on November 10, 2020, and the PlayStation 5 on November 12, 2020.

In the last 12 months, the PlayStation 5 has outsold Xbox Series X|S by 2.79 million units. The PlayStation 5 is currently ahead by 5.24 million units.

The PlayStation 5 has sold 19.06 million units in the US in 39 months, while the Xbox Series X|S sold 13.83 million units. The PlayStation 5 has a 58.0 percent marketshare (+2.5% year-over-year), compared to 42.0 percent for the Xbox Series X|S (-2.5% year-over-year).
