Switch vs DS Sales Comparison in Japan - December 2023

This monthly series compares the aligned Japanese sales of the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo DS.

The DS launched in December 2004 in Japan and the Nintendo Switch launched in March 2017. Therefore, the normal holiday periods and the Japanese Golden Week holiday for the two consoles do not lineup.

Switch Vs. DS Japan:

Gap change in latest month: 415,267 - Switch

Gap change over last 12 months: 2,372,087 - Switch

Total Lead: 1,015,431 - DS

Switch Total Sales: 31,835,447

DS Total Sales: 32,850,878

December 2023 is the 82nd month that the Nintendo Switch has been available for in Japan. During the latest month, the Switch has outsold the DS by 0.42 million units when you align the launches.

In the last 12 months, the Switch has outsold the DS by 2.37 million units. The DS is currently ahead of the Switch by 1.02 million units.

The 82nd month for the Switch is December 2023, while for the DS it is September 2011. The Switch has sold 31.83 million units, while the DS sold 32.85 million units during the same timeframe. The DS sold current Switch sales in month 73.

The DS has sold 32.99 million units lifetime in Japan. The Switch is currently 1.15 million units behind the lifetime sales of the DS.

The last inch will be the longest as Switch nears the end of its lifecycle and saturation point, but this one should be in the bag regardless.
Last gen I never would have imagined another system would top the DS in Japan. Goes to show, you never know.

PS5 vs PS4 Sales Comparison in Japan - December 2023

This monthly series compares the aligned Japanese sales of the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4.

The PlayStation 5 launched in November 2020 in Japan, while the PlayStation 4 launched in February 2014. This does mean the holiday periods for the two consoles do not lineup.

PS5 Vs. PS4 Japan:

Gap change in latest month: 45,512 - PS5

Gap change over last 12 months: 428,841 - PS5

Total Lead: 207,017 - PS5

PlayStation 5 Total Sales: 4,966,352

PlayStation 4 Total Sales: 4,759,335

December 2023 is the 38th month the PlayStation 5 has been available for. In the latest month, the gap grew in favor of the PlayStation 5 when compared to the aligned launch of the PlayStation 4 by 45,512 units.

In the last 12 months, the PS5 has outsold the PS4 by 428,841 units. The PS5 is currently ahead by 207,017 units.

The 38th month for the PS5 in Japan is December 2023, while for the PS4 it is March 2017. The PS5 has sold 4.97 million units, while the PS4 sold 4.76 million units during the same timeframe. The PS4 sold current PS5 sales in month 41.

The PS4 crossed 5 million in month 41, 6 million in month 47, and 7 million in month 53. The PS4 has sold 9.67 million units to date. The PS5 is currently 4.70 million units behind the lifetime sales of the PS4 in Japan.

Xbox Series X|S vs Xbox 360 Sales Comparison in Japan - December 2023

This monthly series compares the aligned sales of the Xbox Series X|S and Xbox 360 in Japan, as well as looking at lifetime original Xbox sales and Xbox One sales.

The Xbox Series X|S launched in Japan in November 2020, while the Xbox 360 launched in Japan in December 2005. The original Xbox launched in Japan in February 2002 and the Xbox One in September 2014.

XSX|S Vs. X360 Japan:

Gap change over last 12 months: 204,984 - X360

Total Lead: 377,821 - X360

Xbox Series X|S Total Sales: 543,660

Xbox 360 Total Sales: 921,481

December 2023 is the 38th month the Xbox Series X|S has been available for in Japan. In the latest month, the gap grew in favor of the Xbox 360 when compared to the aligned launch of the Xbox Series X|S by 25,133 units.

In the last 12 months, the Xbox 360 has outsold the Xbox Series X|S by 204,984 units. The Xbox 360 is currently ahead by 377,821 units.

The Xbox Series X|S has sold 0.54 million units in 38 months, while the Xbox 360 sold 0.92 million units. Month 38 for the Xbox Series X|S is December 2023 and for the Xbox 360 is January 2009.

The Xbox 360 crossed one million units in month 40 and 1.5 million units in month 67. The Xbox 360 sold 1.66 million units lifetime. The Xbox Series X|S is 1.12 million units behind lifetime Xbox 360 sales.

Well, being the 2nd highest selling Xbox in Japan is something, at least.
Should also comfortably exceed OG Xbox + Xbone combined in the end.

I'm thinking at this point the Xbox Series X|S has a shot at 1 million lifetime in Japan, but it won't be outselling the Xbox 360.

PS5 vs PS4 Sales Comparison in Europe - December 2023

This monthly series compares the aligned Europe sales of the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4.

The PlayStation 5 launched in November 2020, while the PlayStation 4 launched in November 2013. This does mean the holiday periods for the two consoles do lineup.

PS5 Vs. PS4 Europe:

PlayStation 4 Total Sales: 22,101,131

December 2023 is the 38th month the PlayStation 5 has been available for. In the latest month, the gap grew in favor of the PlayStation 4 when compared to the aligned launch of the PlayStation 5 by 0.64 million units.

In the last 12 months, the PS5 has outsold the PS4 by 0.69 million units. The PS5 is currently behind the PS4 by 4.72 million units.

The PS5 has sold 17.38 million units in 38 months, while the PS4 sold 22.10 million units. Month 38 for the PS5 is December 2023 and for the PS4 is December 2016.

The PS4 crossed 30 million in month 51 and 40 million in month 72. The PS4 has sold 45.85 million units to date in Europe. The PS5 is 28.47 million units behind lifetime PS4 sales in Europe.

In the last 12 months, the Xbox One has outsold the Xbox Series X|S by 0.51 million units. The Xbox Series X|S is currently behind the Xbox One by 0.52 million units.

The Xbox Series X|S has sold 7.34 million units in 38 months, while the Xbox One sold 7.86 million units. Month 38 for the Xbox Series X|S is December 2023 and for the Xbox One is December 2016.
