Hezbollah says it hit an Israeli tank in southern Lebanon

The Lebanese-armed group says it hit an Israeli tank in southern Lebanon near a village approximately five kilometres (three miles) from the border with Israel. Hezbollah fighters targeted “a Merkava tank on the eastern outskirts of the village of Shamaa with a guided missile, causing it to catch fire”, it said in a statement.

Israel says rockets fired from Lebanon hit Haifa

Israel’s medical emergency services said that rockets fired from Lebanon towards the Carmel area in the northern city of Haifa. Paramedics said they took five people to hospital with mild injuries. The Israeli military said 10 rockets were identified crossing from Lebanon.

Israel’s army said two people were injured when a synagogue was hit in the northern coastal city following a “heavy rocket barrage” by Hezbollah that we reported on earlier.

“This is yet another clear example of Hezbollah’s deliberate targeting of Israeli civilians,” the military said in a statement.

Hezbollah claims targeting multiple military bases in northern Israel

Hezbollah says it bombed several military bases in Haifa and the Carmel region this evening.

This includes the Haifa Technical, Haifa Naval, Stella Maris and Tira Carmel bases, the group said in a statement, adding that it also targeted for the first time the Nesher base, “which includes a gas station southeast of Haifa”.

Earlier, we reported the Israeli army saying two people were injured when a synagogue was hit in Haifa.

Houthis says they attacked ‘vital target’ in Israel’s port city

Houthi spokesperson Yahya Saree said the group’s fighters attacked “a vital target” in Israel’s Red Sea port of Eilat with a number of drones.

“We confirm our continuation of our military operations against the Israeli enemy,” he added. “These operations will not stop until the aggression stops, the siege on the Gaza Strip is lifted, and the aggression on Lebanon stops.”

Protesters hold pro-Palestinian march in Rio before G20

Hundreds of protesters marched in support of Palestinians in Rio de Janeiro, in a demonstration aimed at world leaders about to converge on the city for a G20 summit.

The march, held peacefully under constant rain along Copacabana Beach, was watched by dozens of police and soldiers deployed as security for the summit to be held Monday and Tuesday.

The meeting will see heads of state and government, including US President Joe Biden and China’s President Xi Jinping, discuss coordination on international issues.

The Rio protesters, a few wearing the keffiyeh scarves, held aloft the Palestinian flag and banners, including one reading “Break Brazil-Israel Relations”, and demanded that Israeli allies stop financing its wars in Gaza and in Lebanon.

Hundreds of Israelis demonstrating for a prisoner exchange deal in Gaza

Hundreds of Israelis, including families of Israeli captives in Gaza, are demonstrating at the Karkur Junction north of the country, videos taken by activists and verified by Al Jazeera show.

The protesters were calling on Netanyahu’s government to secure a captives-prisoner exchange deal. Several dozen protesters waved Israeli and yellow captive solidarity flags, while others stressed the need to make every effort to bring them back safely.

Several detained at pro-Palestinian protest in Berlin

German police have detained several demonstrators during a pro-Palestinian protest in Berlin. More than 1,000 people gathered in the German capital to express solidarity with Palestinians and protest Israel’s continuing attacks on Gaza.

Carrying Palestinian flags, the crowd marched with banners reading, “This is an anti-colonial struggle for freedom” and “Hands off Gaza and Lebanon”.

A pro-Israel group gathered along the marching route and tried to provoke the marchers by unfurling Israeli flags, but police stepped in to prevent any confrontations.

Israeli drone attack kills another Palestinian journalist in Gaza

An Israeli drone attack has killed another journalist in Gaza, Wafa news agency reports. Local sources told the agency that Mohammed Saleh al-Sharif was wounded by a drone in Jabalia refugee camp. He was left “bleeding for more than two hours before succumbing to his injuries”, the report added.

Israeli forces have been preventing civil defence and emergency medical teams from operating in northern Gaza for more than 25 days.

According to the Palestinian Journalists Syndicate, 174 journalists have been killed in Gaza since the start of Israel’s war on the Strip on October 7, 2023.

What it means to be hungry in Gaza

https://www.aljazeera.com/features/2024/11/16/stripped-of-our-human-dignity-what-it-means-to-be-hungry-in-gaza

What does it mean to be hungry for months?

In Gaza, where more than 43,000 of us have been killed by Israel’s bombardment and ground invasions – and many more thousands are lost, feared dead, under the rubble – we have been punished with hunger now for more than a year.

In war, survival becomes the only focus, and hunger is a constant reminder of that. We have been forced to be hungry – we did not choose this. We’re struggling to survive under Israeli bombardment, but we’re failing.

House in central Gaza bombed by Israeli forces

Our colleagues at Al Jazeera Arabic are reporting that Israeli forces have bombed a house in the Bureij refugee camp, resulting in several injuries.

Israeli attacks across Gaza have killed at least 43 Palestinians since dawn.

Israeli settlers target Palestinian village in occupied West Bank

Israeli settlers have carried out another attack on Palestinians in the occupied West Bank.

This time, the attack targeted the village of Beit Furik, outside of Nablus where houses, cars and land were burned to the ground after dozens of masked settlers invaded the village.

“They did not leave anything, the electricity pole, and all our belongings, the sofas, the water tank, they did not leave a thing,” Mahmoud Hananeh, a resident of the village, said.

“There were around 40 to 50 settlers, at that time the army’s presence was clear, the army came when we started resisting them and it was clear the army were by the settlers’ side, protecting them, shooting towards us, and harassing us,” Wael Hananeh, another resident, said.

Main points on November 16th

  • At least 43 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli attacks across Gaza since dawn.
  • An Israeli strike on a school where displaced Palestinians were sheltering in Gaza City’s Shati refugee camp has killed 10 people and wounded at least 20 others.
  • A Geneva-based human rights organisation says it has documented dozens of premeditated murders and field executions by Israeli forces in northern Gaza.
  • Hezbollah says it bombed several military bases in Haifa and the Carmel region.
  • Israeli troops arrested 12 people from the occupied West Bank, including former prisoners.
  • Israeli police say two flares were fired at Netanyahu’s house earlier this evening and fell in the garden. The police said Netanyahu and his wife were not in the house when the incident took place.

Israel is correct in stating that they are not the worst civilian death machine. The most cruel, for sure. And the fallout of the wars since Oct 7 will still take years to become clear. Israel is already becoming a serious contender to the US post 9/11 death machine.

Two journalists among five killed in Israeli attack on Gaza City school

We reported earlier that an Israeli air attack on the Fahd al-Sabah school sheltering displaced Palestinians in the Tuffah neighbourhood of Gaza City killed at least five people.

We now know from Palestinian news outlets that two journalist siblings – Ahmad Abu Sakhil and Zahra Abu Sakhil – are among the dead together with their father, Muhammad.

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaand surprise..

PIJ has finally admitted that the "journalists" killed was none other than the military chief of the terror group Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ), Mohammed Abu Sachil. Also killed were his son, his daughter and three other persons (most likely personal guards). They had set up their tents in a former school building.

Sachil took over the post in May this year, after his predecessor was eliminated.

Makes you think twice about all those "journalists" killed...

I guess you are referring to IDF claims posted in Israeli news outlets?

An Israeli military handout issued on November 10, 2024, shows Palestinian Islamic Jihad commander Muhammad Abu Sakhil. (IDF)

Google image translate turns it into Sahail, but the caption underneath states Sakhil.

I only see it reported in Israeli affiliated outlets. I can't find much else on him.

And here is his previous killing on March 29th

https://www.palestinechronicle.com/deadliest-place-for-journalists-cpj-media-organizations-call-for-protection-of-palestinian-reporters/

Muhammad Abu Sakhil of Gaza's al-Quds Radio has been shot and killed by Israeli forces near al-Shifa Hospital.

Muhammad Abu Sakhil, a Palestinian journalist with the Al-Quds Radio, was shot and killed on Thursday by Israeli occupation forces in the vicinity of the Al-Shifa Medical Complex in Gaza City, Al-Jazeera reported.

Yeah surprise indeed. Very confusing.
The wording also suggest his siblings were 'journalists', doesn't say this Muhammad was a journalist himself.

Anyway maybe the IDF got one right (or just lies to protect themselves) a broken clock shows the right time twice a day as well. It doesn't change the fact that far too many innocent civilians get killed in all these so called precision strikes. Did his kids deserve to die? The other 2 people? The wounded for which there is no healthcare?

Targeted assassinations are illegal in most cases, a war crime.

International humanitarian law (IHL)
IHL permits targeted killings of combatants or fighters, or civilians who are directly participating in hostilities. However, targeted killings are problematic because the targets are often far from hostilities or may not be directly participating in hostilities.

Otherwise lobbing rockets into Israel is legal as well, since with the mandatory military draft, everyone is complicit apart from conscientious objectors and those exempt.

This has to stop. Make a legal case, charge them and try them in court like a civilized nation.

Seven killed in Israeli attack on southern Lebanon

Lebanon’s National News Agency is reporting that the seven victims were all from the same family. They were killed in an Israeli attack in the village of Arab Salim, in the Nabatieh governorate of southern Lebanon, the agency reported.

Hezbollah claims attack on Israeli soldiers

The Lebanese armed group says its fighters ambushed Israeli soldiers in the village of Chamaa in southern Lebanon at 11.15pm local time (21:15 GMT) on Saturday, causing several casualties. The group said fighting was ongoing. There was no immediate comment from Israel.

Earlier, Lebanon’s National News Agency (NNA) reported that Israeli soldiers had retreated from Chamaa, which is 5km (3 miles) from the Israeli border and is the furthest point that Israeli soldiers have reached inside Lebanon since they launched a ground invasion on October 1.

The soldiers blew up several homes and the Shrine of Shimon the Prophet, in Chamaa, before their withdrawal, the NNA reported.

Israel carried out 145 attacks on Lebanon in the past 24 hours

The Lebanese government has published a report that demonstrates the scale and intensity of Israel’s attacks on the country.

The report by Minister of Environment Nasser Yassin says there have been 145 Israeli attacks across the country in the past 24 hours. Most of them were in Nabatieh and South Lebanon, with 55 raids and 73 raids, respectively.

The report says there have been a total of 13,222 attacks since the beginning of the aggression.

South Beirut hit after Israeli army threat

The strike hit Beirut’s southern suburbs, footage shared by AFP shows. Earlier, we reported the newest evacuation orders from the Israeli army for the southern suburbs, known as Dahiyeh.

AFP images showed a column of smoke rising over the suburbs, already veiled in smoke from the previous day’s bombardment.

Lebanon’s National News Agency (NNA) is reporting that Israeli jets destroyed a 12-storey residential building in Chiyah in Dahiyeh, shortly after issuing more forced evacuation orders for the area.

NNA also reported “violent” Israeli raids on the neighbourhoods of Burj al-Barajneh and Hadath. The attack on Hadath hit near the vicinity of Saint George Hospital, it said

Lebanese media have posted footage showing the destruction of a building hit by an Israeli air raid in the Hadath area in the southern suburbs of Beirut.

Hezbollah says north of Haifa hit with barrage of rockets

Hezbollah says its fighters targeted the Krayot area north of the occupied city of Haifa “with a barrage of rockets”.

Meanwhile, the Israeli military said in a statement on Telegram about 20 projectiles were identified crossing from Lebanon into Israeli territory, following sirens that sounded about 10am in the Haifa Bay and western Galilee areas.

“Some of the projectiles were intercepted, and the rest fell in open areas,” it said.

Israel carries out at least 27 air attacks on civilian and religious sites in Lebanon: Report

One of the air attacks, Lebanon’s state media reports, targeted the vicinity of Our Lady of Salvation Church near Saint George Hospital in the Hadath area of Beirut’s southern suburb, while another strike targeted a 12-story residential building near the Mar Michael Church in the Chiyah neighbourhood of southern Beirut.

There were no immediate reports of casualties, but the attacks caused extensive damage to nearby structures.

The attacks came shortly after the Israeli army issued immediate forced evacuation orders for residents in the targeted areas.

Lebanon state media reports Israeli raid on central Beirut district

Lebanese state media has reported an Israeli raid on a central Beirut district, citing AFP. “The enemy carried out a strike on Ras al-Nabaa,” the official National News Agency said, an area near the French embassy and a university.

A security source, requesting anonymity, told AFP the strike hit “the Lebanese branch of the Syrian Baath party”, whose office is located “in an apartment”.

More Israeli strikes on southern Beirut

Our correspondent in the Lebanese capital reports that more attacks have hit Dahiyeh, specifically in the neighbourhood of Burj al-Brajneh. Israeli strikes have been pounding Beirut since the early hours of this morning, with the army issuing at least three separate evacuation orders for different areas of the southern suburbs.

Hezbollah spokesman killed in Israeli strike on Beirut

Sources tell Al Jazeera that the earlier Israeli attack on Ras al-Nabaa in central Beirut killed Mohammad Afif. Afif was Hezbollah’s top media relations officer and the point of contact for the organisation known among many journalists in Beirut.

Mohammad Afif, the Hezbollah media relations officer killed earlier in an Israeli strike, was essentially a civilian, Al Jazeera’s Dorsa Jabbari says. He was “a very well-known figure in the media landscape within Lebanon”, she said.

Jabbari said the attack on the neighbourhood of Ras al-Nabaa was carried out near the “administrative heart” of Beirut, not in its southern suburbs, where attacks usually take place. It was close to the neighbourhoods of Achrafieh and Basta, known to be Christian neighbourhoods without much Hezbollah presence, if any.

“Clearly, this is a continuation of the Israeli policy to go after not only the military wing of Hezbollah but also officials within the administrative side of the organisation,” she said.

This pattern doesn’t fit in with the narrative Israel has been selling that it is targeting only the group’s fighters. “What Israel is trying to do is diminish the group’s capabilities on all fronts: economic, social, political, military.”

Israeli targeted assassination aimed at silencing one of Hezbollah’s main media platforms

Mohammad Afif is a well-known Hezbollah official; he’s one of the main people in Hezbollah responsible for media relations. He was also an adviser to the late Hezbollah Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah on media affairs.

Israel has assassinated several main Hezbollah officials in the past few weeks.

Especially since the assassination of Nasrallah, we’ve been seeing Afif in different processes and also leading tours of journalists in the southern suburb. He used to be instrumental in conveying Hezbollah’s media message.

In the past, Afif was director general of al-Manar TV. He’s well-known in Lebanon among journalists.

Given the fact that he’s the media relations officer, he gets to have meetings with all these journalists coming to Lebanon. Whoever is working on Hezbollah stories, whenever there is an interview with Nasrallah, he is there.

This is another Israeli targeted assassination aimed at silencing one of Hezbollah’s main media platforms.

Whoever replaces Afif will likely ‘be targeted’

Dan Perry, a former Middle East editor of The Associated Press news agency, says he is not surprised by Israel’s killing of Mohammad Afif. “I assume it was intentional,” he told Al Jazeera from Tel Aviv. “Israel’s position…is one where they have lost all patience with the very existence of Hezbollah.”

Perry added that there are two competing Israeli narratives when it comes to the war on Lebanon.

“One says, no matter what you do to us, we’re going to prevail, be steadfast. The other says, if we have to, we’ll destroy everything standing that relates to Hezbollah,” he said. “And Israel’s position I don’t think is indefensible, because Hezbollah is controlled by a foreign entity and it’s taken over part of Lebanon.

“Whoever they appoint in his place, I’m sure will be targeted again, because Israel’s position is that Hezbollah, as a non-state actor parked on its borders and attacking it, is completely illegitimate from the point of view of the world order.”

‘Communication is half of the war’

Military analyst Elijah Magnier says the killing of Mohammad Afif is part of Israel’s strategy to disrupt Hezbollah’s leadership and its ability to communicate with the world.

“Spokespersons often play key roles in writing support, shaping public opinion, disseminating propaganda or information, challenging Israel’s narrative, making Afif a significant asset in both military and psychological operations for Israel,” he told Al Jazeera. “So eliminating a very well-established and experienced spokesperson as Afif weakens Hezbollah’s capability to communicate effectively with its supporters and international audience.”

Magnier added that the killing of Afif will also undermine Hezbollah’s ability to coordinate responses that counter Israel’s war narrative, which will force other officials in the group to be more visible.

“And also, it is showing that high-profile people in Hezbollah, no matter if they are military or non-military personnel, they can be assassinated,” he said. Afif presented a challenge to local Lebanese media and criticised them for supporting Israel’s narrative.

“He was very vocal and he affected also the general audience domestically and internationally, showing that Hezbollah is still healthy, confirming that Hezbollah’s tools of communication are still there and communication is half of the war.”

Israel, Hezbollah engaging in ‘propaganda’

Marc Owen Jones, an associate professor of media analytics at Northwestern University Qatar, says Israel and Hezbollah are both engaging in “propaganda” and providing “false information” to the media as a war tactic.

“Hezbollah will not want to reveal the extent or the impact of Israel’s attacks on Lebanon, because this would be demoralising,” Jones told Al Jazeera, adding that Israel has been engaging in a similar strategy to “exaggerate their successes”.

“But if you’re seen to be a dishonest broker, then people won’t necessarily think you are a legitimate actor,” he said. “It’s really deceiving the people at large and the population by not giving them the full facts, the full picture that they are entitled to.”

Israeli attack kills Lebanese soldier, injures three

The Lebanese Army has said one of its posts in al-Mari, in the Hasbaiyya district, was hit in an Israeli attack that killed a soldier. The army said on X that three others were wounded, one of them critically.

Cultural experts urge UN to shield Lebanon’s heritage

Hundreds of cultural professionals, including archaeologists and academics, have called on the United Nations to safeguard war-torn Lebanon’s heritage in a petition published ahead of a crucial meeting of the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

Several Israeli strikes in recent weeks on Baalbek in the east and Tyre in the south hit close to ancient Roman ruins designated as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

The petition, signed by 300 prominent cultural figures, was sent to UNESCO chief Audrey Azoulay a day before a special session in Paris to consider listing Lebanese cultural sites under “enhanced protection”.

It urges UNESCO to protect Baalbek and other heritage sites by establishing “no-target zones” around them, deploying international observers and enforcing measures from the 1954 Hague Convention on cultural heritage in conflict.

In Baalbek, Israeli strikes on November 6 hit near the city’s Roman temples, according to authorities, destroying a heritage house dating back to the French mandate and damaging the historic site.

The ruins host the prestigious Baalbek Festival each year, a landmark event founded in 1956 and now a fixture on the international cultural scene, featuring performances by music legends who have included Oum Kalthoum, Charles Aznavour and Ella Fitzgerald.

Death toll in Israeli strike on Lebanese army post rises to 2

Earlier, we reported an Israeli attack on a Lebanese army post in al-Mari, Hasbaiyya area, which killed one soldier and wounded three, one critically. We are now getting information that another soldier succumbed to his wounds, raising the death toll to two.

“The Israeli enemy directly targeted an army centre [causing] the death of one of the soldiers and the wounding of three others, one of whom is in critical condition,” the army said in a statement.

A separate statement shortly afterwards said “a second soldier” died.
