Aid trucks routinely denied access to north by Israel’s army: Doctor

The amount of humanitarian assistance desperately needed has not entered Gaza in required quantities since October 7, 2023, says a British doctor who has volunteered in the Palestinian territory.

“And of course, since then needs have increased exponentially,” James Smith, an emergency doctor who recently returned after working in Gaza, told Al Jazeera.

Smith said he joined several aid and medical convoys that attempted to move from the south of Gaza to the north.

“More often than not, we were denied access by the Israeli military manning the checkpoints. Very few of the UN convoys that attempted to reach the north have reached. This also on occasion meant we could not retrieve injured and sick patients from the north.”

‘Genocide unfolding in northern Gaza in its clearest form’: PA

Israel is pushing Palestinians in northern Gaza to “certain death” in its deadly offensive and siege on the area, the Palestinian Authority’s Foreign Ministry says.

“The occupation army is forcing residents of northern Gaza to either flee under bombardment or face killing in what resembles a circle of certain death,” it said in a statement.

“Genocide is unfolding in northern Gaza in its clearest form – in full view of the world – marked by siege, starvation, forced displacement, destruction of buildings, aerial bombardment, targeting of health centres, and mass killings.”

The failure of the international community to stop this “war of extermination has emboldened Israel to continue its deadly campaign”, the ministry added.

Israeli air strike kills aid worker in Gaza: NGO

The aid group Mercy Corps says a member of the organisation, Mahasin Khatee, was killed in an attack on Friday.

“We are grieving and send our deepest condolences to her family … our team in Palestine, and to all those who have lost family members and loved ones to violence over the last year of war and unimaginable suffering in Gaza,” a statement by the NGO said.

In April, the United Nations Security Council passed a resolution denouncing attacks on UN staff and aid workers as record numbers have been killed in Israel’s war on the Gaza Strip.

Qassam Brigades claims killing Israeli soldiers in Jabalia

The armed wing of Hamas says its fighters hit two Israeli army personnel carriers with a Shuwath explosive device and a Yassin-105 rocket launcher. The attacks carried out in the east and west of the Jabalia refugee camp in northern Gaza killed and wounded troops, it said.

Israel has been carrying out a huge military incursion in the area, blowing up residential buildings and conducting mass arrests. Both Israel’s army and Palestinian armed groups report heavy clashes.

Statistics bureau says 5 employees killed since October 2023

The Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics (PCBS) also said its office in the Gaza Strip has been destroyed during Israeli bombardment.

But the PCBS said despite the challenges, it continues to work on gathering information pertaining to the Israeli onslaught on the besieged coastal enclave. According to the organisation, between October 7, 2023 and October 15, 2024:

  • More than 43,098 Palestinians have been killed
  • 105,263 people have been injured
  • 9 out of 10 citizens have been displaced at least once
  • 16,300 people have been imprisoned
  • 360,000 housing units have been damaged

Leak of classified documents on Israel’s preparations to attack Iran

Officials in the US say they are investigating the leak of classified documents that assess Israel’s plans to attack Iran, the AP reported. The leaked documents, attributed to the US Geospatial Intelligence Agency and the National Security Agency, were posted on Telegram on Friday.

Axios news site, which first reported the leak, said the release of the highly sensitive material comes as Israel completes weeks of preparation for a promised attack on Iran following the Iranian missile barrage fired at Israel on October 1.

According to Axios, the documents detail measures taken in recent days at several Israeli airbases, including the transfer of advanced munitions in preparation for a forthcoming Iran attack. The documents also contain reports on detailed preparations by Israel’s drone units for the attack.

The Middle East Spectator Telegram channel, which released the documents, said they were provided by a source in the US intelligence community.

Leak of US intelligence on Israel-Iran under investigation: House speaker

US House Speaker Mike Johnson says there’s an investigation under way into the leak of classified US intelligence documents related to Israel’s preparations to launch an attack on Iran.

Speaking to CNN, Johnson said: “There’s a classified-level briefing … we are following it closely.” He did not provide details on the briefing.

The documents first appeared online Friday via a channel on Telegram, claiming they had been leaked by someone in the US intelligence community, then later the US Defense Department. The information appeared entirely gathered through the use of satellite image analysis.

Iran says Israeli military sites in its sights

Tehran says it has pinpointed all of the military targets in Israel it will strike should it launch an attack on Iran, its top diplomat says.

“We will not leave any attack against Iran unanswered and Israel will receive a proportionate response. We have identified all our targets there and a similar attack will be made on their targets,” Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said in an interview with Turkey’s NTV.

He specifically noted any strike on Iran’s nuclear sites.

“Any attack on Iran will be considered crossing a red line for us. Such an attack will not go unanswered. The necessary response will be given to any attack on Iran’s nuclear facilities or any similar attack.”

Netanyahu blames Iran for drone ‘assassination attempt'

Hours after that drone attack that targeted the residence of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in the northern Israeli city of Caesarea, Netanyahu issued a statement in which he said ‘the attempt by Iran’s proxy, Hezbollah, to assassinate me and my wife today was a grave mistake’.

He also went on to say, ‘I say to Iran and its proxies and its axis of evil, anyone who tries to harm Israel’s citizens will pay a heavy price.’

Shortly after that statement was issued, unnamed diplomatic sources close to Netanyahu – which were quoted in Israeli media outlets – also blamed Iran for what they called the assassination attempt against Netanyahu, saying there would be retaliation for the attack.

All of this comes at a time of heightened tension when the region is on tenterhooks waiting for the promised Israeli response to the Iranian missile attack on Israel on October 1. Israel has vowed to strike back and strike back hard.

Attack on Netanyahu’s home may prompt targeting of Iran’s supreme leader

Jean-Marc Rickli, head of global risk at the Geneva Center for Security Policy, says the fact the Israeli leader is pointing the finger at Iran for the attack on his residence in Caesarea could turn into a major escalation.

“If we look at the equivalent of Benjamin Netanyahu being attacked by a drone being considered as an assassination attempt … if we make a parallel with Iran the legitimate target could be the supreme leader,” Rickli told Al Jazeera.

“Israel is trying to establish deterrence against Iran’s proxies and surrogates in the region, not only Hezbollah but the Houthis and other groups. The Israelis are signalling they’re ready to apply what they have done with Hamas and what they started to do with Hezbollah – which is decapitating first the heads of these movements – and then trying to neutralise these movements.”

Beirut covered in haze after Israeli bombardment

Israeli air strikes left Beirut’s southern suburbs covered in thick plumes of smoke on Saturday

Israel’s heavy bombardment has destroyed buildings, creating debris and contamination

The Associated Press news agency reports that early morning air strikes on the Lebanese capital have lit up the sky and smoke is billowing over Beirut city. The strikes follow after Israel carried out at least 10 air strikes on Beirut’s southern suburbs of Dahiyeh on Saturday.

No reports have yet emerged of casualties or the extent of the destruction in Dahiyeh, which was reportedly targeted once again this morning.

Israeli army claims killing of Hezbollah commanders

In a statement, the Israeli military says its fighter jets killed three Hezbollah commanders.

It said the dead included Alhaj Abbas Salameh, a senior figure in the group’s southern command, Radja Abbas Awache, a communications expert, and Ahmad Ali Hussein, who was responsible for strategic weapons development.

It wasn’t clear if the three were killed in what the military said were strikes on Hezbollah’s intelligence headquarters in southern Beirut or in separate actions. Hezbollah made no immediate comment.

Early on Sunday, two Israeli strikes targeted the Harat Hreik neighbourhood in the southern suburbs of Beirut, hitting a residential building near Bahman Hospital, Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency said.

Israeli strike hit building housing ‘the absolute desperate unable to escape’

Hezbollah says it launched four separate attacks this morning. We had a relative period of calm from the Israeli side – not as many air strikes, drone attacks, or artillery shelling coming in. But that appears to be changing.

Hezbollah, however, has fired more than 120 rockets in the last 24 hours. In southern Beirut, what we’re hearing from the Israelis is they targeted a Hezbollah intelligence centre.

What we’re hearing from people on the ground is those living in that building were absolutely desperate, who aren’t able to escape, can’t afford to go anywhere, and are stuck in those southern suburbs.

They were given very short notice to evacuate by the Israeli military, and then those multiple air strikes came in.

Israel bombs Lebanon’s Bekaa Valley amid evacuation orders

We’ve seen some strikes in the southern parts of Lebanon around Tyre – a city that’s come under intense Israeli strikes. We also saw some strikes yesterday in Nabatieh.

Here, in the east of Lebanon, we saw a drone strike take place yesterday and, for the first time this week, we saw those so-called evacuation orders in the east of the country.

These are threats and warnings telling people to either leave or get bombed and that has happened in towns and villages across the east of Lebanon.

People are being displaced. They’ve been displaced from the south and they went to Beirut. People also came here, to the Bekaa Valley, seeking refuge. But the same thing is now happening here.

Hezbollah has also said that this is a new phase of the war for them. They have not given details. And Israel has increased the intensity of their air strikes, not only in the south and Beirut but also here in the east.

Israeli strikes hit dozens of southern Lebanon locations

Israel’s military has attacked dozens of southern Lebanon villages and towns overnight and targeted Nabatieh city for a third time this week.

“Warplanes struck … the city of Nabatieh seven times,” Lebanon’s official National News Agency said. It added Israeli jets “conducted strikes” on more than 50 towns and villages, reporting casualties.

Lebanese state media also reported two Israeli air strikes in the morning in Haret Hreik and one in Hadath – all in Hezbollah’s southern Beirut stronghold of Dahiyeh.

Hezbollah says launched ‘big rocket salvo’ at north Israel base

The Lebanese group says it launched a large barrage of rockets at an Israeli army base near the northern town of Safad.

Hezbollah fighters fired “a big rocket salvo” at the base, the group said, adding the attack was “in defence of Lebanon” and “in response to the Israeli enemy’s attacks on villages and homes”.

Israel has reported repeated attacks with more than 100 rockets launched from Lebanon since early this morning.

Hezbollah says it attacked Israeli troops in Lebanon border villages

The group says it fired rockets at Israeli troops in two villages inside Lebanese territory near the southern border.

Fighters from the Lebanese group launched “a rocket salvo” at Israeli “enemy forces” on the outskirts of the village of Markaba, as well as on soldiers nearby “west of the village of Odaisseh”.

Hezbollah and Israel have been in intense exchanges of fire nearly three weeks after Israel announced ground incursions into neighbouring Lebanon.

3 troops killed by Israeli attack in southern Lebanon: Army

The Lebanese military says three of its soldiers have been killed in an Israeli air strike on their vehicle.

The troops were killed on a road connecting the border village of Ain Ebel to the nearby town of Hanine. The latest deaths bring the number of troop casualties to eight killed since an all-out war erupted between Israel and Hezbollah last month.

Israel to take legal action against Macron over naval trade show ban

Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz says he ordered legal proceedings against French President Emmanuel Macron after France banned Israeli firms from participating in an upcoming naval trade show.

“[These] are undemocratic steps that are not acceptable between friendly countries and I call on French President Macron to cancel them completely,” he wrote on X in Hebrew.

The decision to bar Israeli firms is the latest incident in a row fuelled by the Macron government’s unease over Israel’s conduct in the wars in Gaza and Lebanon.

War’s expansion to the north cost Israel $6.7bn since September

Israeli media is reporting that these additional costs have led to an expansion in the country’s annual budget given the lack of funding sources.

The report added that the cost of the ammunition being used in Lebanon is “extremely high”, referring to an unnamed military source who said “a day of fighting in Lebanon costs $134m – a number that is likely to increase”.

The paper also cited an unnamed economic expert as saying that long-term fighting in the north and the south at the same time will have adverse effects on the Israeli economy.

That's almost a billion a week.

Amnesty International urges European countries to halt arms sales to Israel

Amnesty International has expressed concern over continued arms sales by European nations to Israel amid attacks on Gaza and Lebanon, calling for a complete “arms embargo” due to “severe human rights violations”.

“States should unilaterally impose an embargo on Israel that would include not just weapons and systems that are coming from their states, but stopping participation in supply chains into weapon systems that eventually end up in Israel,” Patrick Wilcken, Amnesty International arms control policy adviser and human rights researcher, said in an interview with Anadolu news agency.

European countries are part of the 2013 Arms Trade Treaty, which prohibits them from authorising the transfer of arms that could be used in attacks against civilian targets.

Fires break out in northern Israel from Hezbollah rockets

Fires have broken out in Safed in northern Israel after Hezbollah launched a barrage of rockets from Lebanon. Planes were seen dropping water and responders were extinguishing fires near houses.

Sirens blared in Haifa after projectiles were launched. Israeli media reported that more than 100 rockets were fired from Lebanon to northern Israel on Sunday.

Hezbollah made no immediate comment on the strikes, but said it had fired missiles at Israeli forces in Lebanon and at a base in northern Israel.

Israeli army says 160 rockets launched from Lebanon

The Israeli army says at least 160 rockets were fired throughout the day from Lebanon. The latest volley was fired towards Haifa, in northern Israel. The rockets also hit areas in Safed, Haifa, Acre and Margaliot among other places in the country’s north near the border with Lebanon.

Israeli army destroys southern Lebanon villages, razing homes and mosques

The Israeli army has almost destroyed several villages in southern Lebanon, razing homes and mosques to the ground, local security sources told Germany’s DPA news agency. According to the report, the military blew up the town of Ramyah in the Bint Jbeil district in southern Lebanon.

A few days ago, a photo was shared on social media showing Israeli soldiers posing in front of the village’s community building.

A separate report from Lebanon’s National News Agency said Israel was carrying out a large-scale bombing of buildings across the southern Lebanese towns of Odaisseh, Markaba and Rab el-Thalathine.

The reports come as Israel’s Defence Minister Yoav Gallant told his troops that Israel was not only “defeating the enemy [Hezbollah], but we are destroying them in all the villages along the border, in the places that Hezbollah planned to use as launchpads for attacks against Israel”.

While Israel claims its stated objective is to dismantle Hezbollah’s infrastructure in southern Lebanon, it has issued a wave of enforced evacuation orders for hundreds of villages in the south, causing mass displacement.

It has also bombed towns in the north of the country, as well as locations that are far from Hezbollah-controlled areas.

Hezbollah targets three Israeli military bases with rockets

Hezbollah said it fired rockets at three military bases in northern Israel, hours after Israel said it was stepping up its strikes targeting the group in southern Lebanon.

The rocket salvos targeted bases near Haifa, Safed and Tiberias, Hezbollah said, after Israel’s Defence Minister Yoav Gallant told troops that Israel was “destroying” the group in south Lebanon.

Israeli army demolished UNIFIL observation tower in southern Lebanon

An Israeli army bulldozer “deliberately” demolished an observation tower and perimeter fence of a UN position in Marwahin, southern Lebanon, United Nations peacekeeping mission UNIFIL said in a statement.

“Yet again, we note that breaching a UN position and damaging UN assets is a flagrant violation of international law and Security Council resolution 1701,” read the statement. “It also endangers the safety and security of our peacekeepers in violation of international humanitarian law.”

The incident is the latest in a series of attacks against UN bases in southern Lebanon as the Israeli army is pressuring the peacekeepers to leave their positions.

“Despite the pressure being exerted on the mission and our troop-contributing countries, peacekeepers remain in all positions. We will continue to undertake our mandated tasks to monitor and report,” UNIFIL said.

Israel says it will target those connected to Hezbollah’s financial arm

Israel will carry out targeted strikes on sites belonging to Hezbollah’s financial arm in Lebanon in the coming hours and residents have been urged to evacuate areas close to those facilities, Israeli military spokesperson Daniel Hagari has said.

“We will attack a number of targets in the coming hours,” he said during a news briefing.

Israel air strikes hit Beirut suburbs

Lebanon’s National News Agency is reporting that “enemy aircraft launched a second raid on the southern suburb of Beirut”. Reuters news agency also reported witnesses as saying a blast was heard and smoke was seen over Dahiyeh.

Smoke and flames rise following an Israeli attack on the southern Dahiyeh area of Beirut, on Sunday

At least four Israeli strikes reported across Lebanon

Soon after the Israeli army announced the targeting of Hezbollah’s financial infrastructure in Beirut and other parts of Lebanon, our colleagues reported the following:

  • An Israeli drone bombed a building in the town of Bednayel in the eastern Bekaa region.
  • Two Israeli raids hit the city of Nabatieh and the town of Maarakeh in southern Lebanon.
  • Israeli drones bombed buildings in Baalbek, Hermel and Ali al-Nahri in the Bekaa region.
  • Four Israeli air strikes also hit Beirut’s southern suburbs.

Beirut residents flee in panic after Israeli warnings

Hundreds of Beirut residents fled their homes after Israel said it was preparing to attack sites linked to Hezbollah’s financial operations and told people to leave those areas immediately.

Panicked crowds clogged the streets and traffic jams were witnessed in some parts of Beirut as people tried to get to neighbourhoods thought to be safer, witnesses told Reuters news agency.

Soon after the Israeli warning, several blasts were heard and fire was seen in Beirut’s southern suburbs.

Israeli strikes target ‘financial’ arm of Hezbollah in Beirut

At least three branches of al-Qard al-Hassan, which Israel accuses of financing Hezbollah, were hit in the strikes, Lebanon’s National News Agency (NNA) reported.

The report added that residents of Hermel started evacuating after one of the branches in the area was hit. Another branch was hit in Ghobeiry in the Dahiyeh southern neighbourhood of Beirut, as well as in Hay el-Sellom and Burj al-Barajneh, NNA said.

Israel claimed the purpose of this wave of attacks is to undermine the economic stability of Hezbollah, Israeli Army Radio said.

Al-Qard al-Hassan says deposits secure

The al-Qard al-Hassan Association, which Israel says is Hezbollah’s financing arm, says it has taken “all of the necessary procedures since the beginning of the war to safeguard your deposits and valuables and can confirm that you should not worry they are safe”.

The statement was released after the Israeli army announced the targeting of the financial institution’s offices across Lebanon. The statement ended with “an eye for an eye and tooth for a tooth”.

At least 16 people killed in Lebanon on Saturday

At least 16 people were killed and 59 wounded in Israeli air attacks on Saturday, Lebanon’s Health Ministry said.

  • Five people were killed and 23 were wounded in Nabatieh city
  • Nine were wounded in eastern Bekaa
  • At least 11 were killed and 27 wounded in the south.

Since the start of the war in October last year, 2,464 people have been killed in Lebanon and at least 11,530 wounded by Israeli attacks.

Israeli army launches at least 12 strikes on Beirut suburb

As we have reported, Israel has been targeting several locations across Lebanon as the military announced the targeting of Hezbollah-affiliated financial institutions. Now, our colleagues on the ground are reporting that at least 12 missiles hit Beirut’s southern suburbs. They also said some strikes hit very close to the capital’s international airport.

UN ‘crumbling under the weight of shame’ over Gaza

UN Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese said that “in Gaza, the collective shame of the century continues unabated and unstopped, in defiance of every norm of international law”.

In a post on X, she said Palestinians in the besieged coastal enclave have been abandoned and subjected to Israeli summary executions, mass forced displacements, and other egregious abuses.

Albanese called it “a disgraceful testament to our global failure to protect basic human rights”.

“The United Nations, once a believed beacon of hope and a force for peace, [is] crumbling under the weight of this shame – and the pressure of the inaction or complicity of its most powerful member states.”

UN concerned about ‘destruction’ of Palestinians in north Gaza

The UN Human Rights Office (OHCHR) says it is increasingly concerned that the Israeli military’s actions in North Gaza “may be causing the destruction of the Palestinian population through death and displacement”.

This is particularly the case around Jabalia, Beit Lahiya and Beit Hanoon, the OHCHR said, adding that Israeli authorities prevented the entry of all essential supplies to northern Gaza between October 1 and 14.

“After October 15, a token amount of aid seems to have entered the North, but this does not commensurate with the needs of the population.” The UN office also said that the army told people to leave north Gaza but at the same time continued to bomb and attack the area, making it dangerous for civilians to flee.

It added that:

  • It has received reports of Palestinians being targeted while fleeing.
  • Israeli troops destroyed residential buildings and attacked schools serving as shelters.
  • The Israeli military resumed attacks on two of the three main hospitals in north Gaza.
  • Rescue teams and medics continue to report restrictions and direct and indirect attacks by the Israeli military, hindering lifesaving operations.
  • Internet services in north Gaza have been disrupted since October 19.
  • At least three Palestinian journalists have been killed in the last two weeks.
  • Reports also indicate that tens of Palestinian men are being taken into custody by the Israeli army.

Oh well, at least the UN is "concerned" WTF

Humanitarian teams must be allowed into Jabalia: UN

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) says as Jabalia continues to be under Israeli siege, “humanitarian and rescue teams must be allowed access without delay to save lives”.

In a post on X, the UNRWA said: “Ongoing military operations in northern Gaza are putting tens of thousands of people in grave danger and cutting off access to their essentials for survival, including water.”

Earlier, Joyce Msuya, acting humanitarian chief at the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), said people are still trapped under the rubble after a deadly night of bombardment and first responders are being blocked from reaching them.

UN calls for ‘urgent’ opening of crossing points into north Gaza

The United Nations agency OCHA says it’s unable to run a humanitarian operation at the scale needed with what it called “a few unreliable and poorly accessible crossing points”. “Many routes must open for critical supplies/services. Aid has only been facilitated when it has reached the people who need it, when they need it,” OCHA said.

UN officials have been asking Israeli authorities since Friday “to urgently facilitate our access to North Gaza, to support rescuing dozens trapped under rubble”.

“Every minute counts. Previously, delayed approvals resulted in rescue teams only recovering dead bodies,” OCHA said.

In Jabalia, Israeli forces ‘detained all men and warned women to leave’

The Israeli military siege of northern Gaza, now in its 16th day, continues with access to food, water, medicine and vital services cut off for an estimated 400,000 trapped residents.

Some of them say they have been separated from their families after Israeli soldiers stormed their shelters and detained dozens of men.

“The Israeli tanks besieged the area and forced all us out of the sheltering school,” a Palestinian woman, carrying a baby on her shoulders, said. “They detained all men and warned all women to leave in groups. We left everything behind, even baby milk.

“The Israelis started shelling us with artillery, their drone and warplanes fired missiles, too. Then, they stormed the area with their tanks and opened fire randomly.”
