Israeli army demolished UNIFIL observation tower in southern Lebanon
An Israeli army bulldozer “deliberately” demolished an observation tower and perimeter fence of a UN position in Marwahin, southern Lebanon, United Nations peacekeeping mission UNIFIL said in a statement.
“Yet again, we note that breaching a UN position and damaging UN assets is a flagrant violation of international law and Security Council resolution 1701,” read the statement. “It also endangers the safety and security of our peacekeepers in violation of international humanitarian law.”
The incident is the latest in a series of attacks against UN bases in southern Lebanon as the Israeli army is pressuring the peacekeepers to leave their positions.
“Despite the pressure being exerted on the mission and our troop-contributing countries, peacekeepers remain in all positions. We will continue to undertake our mandated tasks to monitor and report,” UNIFIL said.
Israel says it will target those connected to Hezbollah’s financial arm
Israel will carry out targeted strikes on sites belonging to Hezbollah’s financial arm in Lebanon in the coming hours and residents have been urged to evacuate areas close to those facilities, Israeli military spokesperson Daniel Hagari has said.
“We will attack a number of targets in the coming hours,” he said during a news briefing.
Israel air strikes hit Beirut suburbs
Lebanon’s National News Agency is reporting that “enemy aircraft launched a second raid on the southern suburb of Beirut”. Reuters news agency also reported witnesses as saying a blast was heard and smoke was seen over Dahiyeh.
