Hezbollah says ready for any Israeli military scenario

Hezbollah says this is a war of reckoning. It has been preparing for a potential ground invasion since 2006. And it has always said it is ready for any scenario. Hassan Nasrallah, the leader of Hezbollah, was very clear in his speech a few days ago, saying that if Israel tries put a buffer zone into southern Lebanon, it will fail.

In the last few moments, I’ve heard at least two air strikes come in. The Israeli army announced that they were concentrating on Nabatieh governorate. That’s where I am. All the afternoon, we’ve seen air strikes take place.

There are two things that are going on here: First, it’s the offensive air strikes that take place – those designed to knock out Hezbollah infrastructure. And then there’s the reactive air strikes – every time we hear a barrage of Hezbollah rockets going into Israel, about 15-20 minutes later, we see an air strike in that area.

UN agencies, Lebanese authorities preparing for mass casualty events

The UN agency OCHA says the World Health Organization and the Lebanese Ministry of Public Health are preparing for mass casualty events in Lebanon and maintaining essential services as Israel intensifies its bombing campaign.

These including mental health support despite health stock levels being critically low, and urgent restocking being needed, it said.

OCHA also said that several agencies are making preparations to meet humanitarian needs, noting that the UNFPA has 25,000 dignity kits ready and the WFP has prepositioned food for up to 150,000 people.

However, it said more shelters are needed beyond schools and that funding for repairs is lacking. It also said that 290 schools are being used as shelters, affecting education for 100,000 students and exacerbating pre-existing challenges.

Israel continues attacks on southern Lebanon

Israeli army boss says Lebanon air raids preparing way for possible ground push

General Herzi Halevi has told Israeli soldiers that the air attacks on Lebanon would continue in order to destroy Hezbollah’s infrastructure and to prepare the way for a possible ground offensive.

“You hear the jets overhead; we have been striking all day,” the Israeli army chief told troops on the border with Lebanon, according to a statement from the military.

“This is both to prepare the ground for your possible entry and to continue degrading Hezbollah.”

‘Netanyahu expanding genocidal campaign to Lebanon’

US Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib of Michigan says the Biden-Harris administration continues to allow Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his far-right government to “operate with impunity as they carry out war crimes”.

“After facing no red line in Gaza, in an attempt to remain in power, Netanyahu is now expanding his genocidal campaign to Lebanon, using the same tactics the Biden-Harris administration has endorsed,” she said.

Tlaib represents the Detroit suburbs of Dearborn and Dearborn Heights – home to one of the largest Lebanese communities in the United States.

“The same US weapons being used to kill innocent civilians in Gaza have already claimed the lives of over 500 people in Lebanon, including over 50 children, and have injured thousands more civilians,” she said in a statement.

“Deploying more US troops and sending more US bombs will only lead to more suffering and carnage. The Biden-Harris administration is capable of stopping the bloodshed. President Biden must implement an immediate arms embargo to end the slaughter and de-escalate the risk of a wider regional war.”

Blinken says US working to avoid full-blown war on Lebanon

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken says the risk to the Middle East is “acute” and Washington and its allies are trying to avoid an all-out conflict between Israel and Hezbollah.

“With regard to Lebanon, we’ve been working tirelessly with partners to avoid a full-blown war and to move to a diplomatic process that would allow Israelis and Lebanese alike to go back to their homes,” Blinken said at the start of a meeting of the Gulf Cooperation Council in New York City.

“Risk of escalation in the region is acute. The best answer is diplomacy, and our coordinated efforts are vital to preventing further escalation.”

The United States has been slammed for not putting an end to the war on Gaza, now approaching its one-year mark, which critics say has enabled Israel to carry out attacks on Lebanon.

By now 'Blinken says' should be replaced with 'Blinken lies'. The only thing he's doing is telling everyone not to defend themselves against Israel.

Israel is repeating its Gaza assault in Lebanon. Why?

Because Israel needs a quick end and thinks this will work, said Yousef Munayyer from the Arab Center Washington DC.

“And so they’re using the same sort of tactics that they used in Gaza,” Munayyer said. “This is part of an Israeli strategy aimed at bringing great pressure on Hezbollah.”

He said Israel hopes to “get out of the situation without a ground invasion, without a long drawn-out battle” – and to avoid getting bogged down in Lebanon just as it has in Gaza.

Trying the same thing over and over, expecting different results. That's Israel in a nutshell.

More from Israel’s army chief on possible Lebanon invasion

A statement provided more comments from army chief Herzi Halevi on Israel’s plan against Hezbollah.

“Hezbollah today expanded its [range] of fire. Later today, it will receive a very strong response … We are not stopping. We will keep attacking and harming them everywhere,” Halevi told a tank unit along the border with Lebanon.

“Your entry there with force … will show [Hezbollah] what it is like to meet a professional combat force. You are coming in much stronger than them, much more experienced than them. Go in, destroy the enemy there, and go destroy the infrastructure.

“These are the things that will allow us to safely repatriate the residents of the north later.”

Professional combat force? It's a bunch of reservists with expensive toys and little discipline. Unless the IDF has been holding back the professionals for the last 11 months, this sounds delusional. But I guess they have experience harassing unarmed Palestinians in the West Bank...

Five killed in Israeli attack near southern Lebanon’s Tyre

Among those killed is a baby, Lebanon’s National News Agency reports. The Israeli air raid hit the suburb of Chehour, on the outskirts of Tyre, in southern Lebanon.

Thousands of terrified families have fled southern Lebanon, joining an estimated 110,000 people who escaped earlier to seek shelter wherever possible from Israeli bombardment. The total number of displaced Lebanese is about 500,000 now.

Israeli attacks on Lebanon putting civilians ‘at grave risk’

Human Rights Watch (HRW) is pressing for an international investigation into attacks on Lebanon. Israeli strikes on the country on Monday killed at least 558 people – the deadliest day of violence since Lebanon’s 1975-90 civil war.

“More than 1,000 Israeli strikes across Lebanon that have killed hundreds of people and injured thousands are placing civilians across the country at grave risk of harm,” HRW said in a statement.

United Nations “member states should take urgent action to establish an independent inquiry into violations during the current hostilities”, said Lama Fakih, HRW’s Middle East and North Africa director.

“The presence of a Hezbollah commander, rocket launcher, or other military facility in a populated area does not justify attacking the area without regard to the civilian population.”

Biden: All-out war is possible but not inevitable in Middle East

US President Joe Biden says a full-scale conflict is possible in the Middle East, but there is also the potential of a settlement in Israel’s war on Gaza and Lebanon.

“An all-out war is possible, but I think there’s also the opportunity – we’re still in play – to have a settlement that can fundamentally change the whole region,” Biden said in an appearance on US broadcaster ABC’s The View.

Since Israel’s war on Gaza started on October 7, Biden has offered the government of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu unconditional military and diplomatic support. Critics say the carnage in Gaza will define Biden’s place in the history books.

What settlement would that be? A ceasefire, permanent withdrawal from Gaza and a 2 state solution ending the occupation of the West Bank would definitely change the whole region. Yet Biden will have to stop enabling Netanyahu to achieve that. That doesn't look likely to ever happen.

Israel has to learn to live with its neighbors instead of dehumanizing and bombing them.

“They have a possibility – I don’t want to exaggerate it – there’s a possibility if we can deal with a ceasefire in Lebanon that it can move into dealing with the West Bank as well. We also have Gaza to deal with,” said Biden in the interview.

“It’s possible and I’m using every bit of energy with my team to get this done. There’s a desire to see change in the region.”

The US president also pressed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to drop his opposition to an independent Palestinian state to end the burgeoning Middle East crisis.

“I don’t agree with his [Netanyahu’s] position. There needs to be a two-state solution.”

Saying the right words, still doing the opposite. Here's more bombs, please stop using them.

Palestinians in Lebanon displaced as Israel continues attacks

The UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) says people are being displaced during intensified Israeli attacks and “escalating violence”. UNRWA opened emergency shelters and says it is providing displaced families with essential supplies including food, water and mattresses.

“Our teams are working to reach those in need with critical humanitarian aid,” it said.

Netanyahu pledges to use ‘full force’ until northern residents return

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu repeated his promise to return the tens of thousands of Israelis evacuated from northern border areas and settlements, and said Hezbollah is being hit “harder than it could imagine”.

“I can’t go into detail about everything we do. But I can tell you one thing: We are determined to return our residents in the north safely to their homes,” he said in a brief video message that did not comment on reported US-led efforts to secure a ceasefire deal.

Last week, Netanyahu expanded his goals for the war on Gaza to include enabling Israelis who fled areas near the Lebanese border to return to their homes.

Turkey voices support for Lebanon during Israeli assault

In a meeting on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan told his Lebanese counterpart Abdallah Bou Habib that Israel’s attacks on Lebanon are “unacceptable” and meant to “drag the region into chaos”, an unnamed Turkish diplomatic source told Reuters news agency.

A NATO member, Turkey has denounced Israel’s devastating military assault in Gaza. Turkey has halted all trade with Israel and applied to join a genocide case against it at the World Court.

Bou Habib thanked Fidan for a Turkish shipment of medicine that arrived in Lebanon earlier today, the source added, and also briefed Fidan on the latest developments in Lebanon.

UK PM Starmer urges ceasefire: ‘No military solution here’

The United Kingdom’s Prime Minister Keir Starmer called for diplomacy and an immediate ceasefire to bring Israel and Hezbollah back from the brink at a UN Security Council meeting.

Israeli air strikes, which killed at least 51 people, brought Lebanon’s deadliest day since the end of a 1975-90 civil war.

“The region is on the brink. We need an immediate ceasefire between Israel and Lebanese Hezbollah and the implementation of a political plan which allows Israeli and Lebanese civilians to return to their homes to live in peace and security,” Starmer said.

“That security will come through diplomacy, not escalation. There is no military solution here, nor is there a military-only solution to the conflict in Gaza. This council must demand, again, an immediate, full and complete ceasefire in Gaza with the release of all the hostages.”

Actions are louder than words Starmer.

US, France working on Lebanon diplomatic initiative

The United States and France are trying to hammer out an interim accord to halt hostilities between Israel and the Lebanese Hezbollah group with a view to opening broader diplomatic talks, Cyprus’s President Nikos Christodoulides says.

“I don’t see that we can have a [broad] agreement but a form of interim agreement in order to avoid further escalation. This is the effort right now especially from the United States and France,” Christodoulides said.

“Avoid further escalation to give time to diplomacy to find a permanent solution.”

He said he spoke to Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati and French President Emmanuel Macron in New York and by phone with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

France’s Macron calls for end of Israeli attacks on Lebanon

French President Emmanuel Macron pressed for an end to days of deadly Israeli strikes on Lebanon as he spoke at the United Nations headquarters in New York.

“We urge Israel to cease this escalation in Lebanon, and to Hezbollah to cease these missile launches to Israel. We urge all of those who provide [Hezbollah] with the means to do so to stop doing so,” he said.

What about those who provide Netanyahu with the means to do so.... Oh wait, Lebanese lives don't matter. It's only the prospect of Hezbollah being capable of hitting more than military targets in Israel that has you worried.

The French president says he’s dispatching his foreign minister to Lebanon as part of efforts to stop a full-scale war from breaking out, calling on Israel and Hezbollah to immediately stop hostilities.

“There cannot be, must not be war in Lebanon,” Emmanuel Macron said in a speech at the UN General Assembly in New York City.

Macron also demanded a ceasefire “as soon as possible” in Israel’s war on Gaza, which he said “has gone on too long”. He added “there is no explanation possible” for the thousands of Palestinian civilian deaths.

Then you should dispatch your foreign minister to Israel....

Israeli ground troops ‘at a major disadvantage’ in south Lebanon

Israeli officials are currently meeting at the defence ministry, being briefed by their top military commanders. Some Israeli media are reporting there’s discussion of potential approval for a ground offensive into southern Lebanon.

I think we need to be very cautious with that. But yes, the Israelis pulled two combat brigades to the north with the army chief saying this is a possibility. They’ve been saying for the last three days that they’re prepared to go in.

But certainly, the Israeli military does know if it does go in boots on the ground that they are in Hezbollah territory – the south is their stronghold – and they’ll certainly be at a major disadvantage.

We’re also hearing from the Americans that their priority is to avoid a ground offensive. And now there are all these media leaks about talks on a ceasefire. I think all of these things need to be taken with a major grain of salt.

Yeah I doubt the IDF would actually go through with their 'threats'. They suffered badly last time they occupied Southern Lebanon. (1982-2006) However, you never know with Netanyahu. Ground invasion of Rafah was also off the table...

Lebanon rescue team pulls out body of person killed in Byblos

The body of a slain Lebanese national has been retrieved from under the rubble of a destroyed home in Lebanon’s Byblos, the National News Agency reports. It cited the civil defence agency as saying the body was moved to the CHU Notre Dame des Secours Hospital.

At least 51 people have been killed and 223 wounded in Wednesday’s relentless attacks by Israel, according to the Lebanese health minister.

Lebanese rescue teams pull out 3 bodies from destroyed homes

The Lebanese civil defence agency says it pulled out the body of a woman killed in continuing Israeli air raids on a house in the village of Maaysra, in the district of Keserwan.

Rescue teams also pulled out the bodies of two people – a husband and wife – from a different residence.

All bodies were taken to hospital morgues, and efforts are continuing to pull more victims out and look for survivors, the agency said.

Syria faces influx of people fleeing Israeli bombing: UN

The Middle East cannot afford another displacement crisis, the United Nations refugee agency has warned.

“Thousands of Lebanese and Syrian people are fleeing Lebanon for Syria in desperation as Israeli air strikes continue to devastate civilian lives,” UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) chief Filippo Grandi said in a statement.

UNHCR is ramping up efforts to address the situation. “Hundreds of vehicles are backed up in queues at the Syrian border. Many people are also arriving on foot, carrying what they can. Large crowds – including women, young children and babies – are waiting in line after spending the night outdoors in falling temperatures,” said the statement.

It said the attacks are “extracting a terrible toll”, driving tens of thousands from their homes.

“It is yet another ordeal for families who previously fled war in Syria only now to be bombed in the country where they sought shelter,” Grandi said. “We must avoid replaying these scenes of despair and devastation.”

Israel air strikes hit new areas of Lebanon

Israel expanded the zones in Lebanon it’s been striking with attacks for the first time on the beach resort of Jiyyeh, just south of the capital Beirut. It also hit Bint Jbeil, Tebnin and Ain Qana in the south, the village of Joun in the Chouf district near Sidon, and Maaysrah in the northern Keserwan district.

As many as 500,000 people may have been displaced in Lebanon, its foreign minister said. In Beirut, thousands of people displaced from southern Lebanon are sheltering in schools and other buildings.

At least 51 people were killed and 223 wounded in Israeli air strikes and artillery fire on Wednesday.

More than 20 killed in Israeli attacks on string of villages in Lebanon

At least 22 people have been killed and 48 others wounded in Israeli strikes on several towns, the Lebanese National News Agency reports.

The attacks targeted:

  • Maaysrah village in Ftouh Keserwan
  • Joun village in the mountainous Chouf district
  • Ras Osta village in the Byblos district

Lebanon’s Nabatieh region targeted, 20 killed in Israeli attacks

At least 20 people have been killed in Israeli attacks on towns and villages in Nabatieh governorate, Lebanon’s National News Agency reports. Eighty-eight others were wounded, it said, citing medical sources.

Israeli strikes on Lebanon kill 72, wound nearly 400: Health Ministry

Israeli attacks on Lebanon killed 72 people on Wednesday, the Health Ministry says. Israeli air strikes killed 38 people in southern Lebanon, 12 in the eastern Bekaa region, and 22 in three towns north and south of the capital, Beirut.

Nearly 400 people were wounded, it said in a statement.

Several killed in Israeli air strike on Baalbek’s Younine

At least nine people have been killed and 11 others wounded in an Israeli air raid on the town of Younine, in southern Lebanon’s city of Baalbek, the National News agency reports. Search-and-rescue efforts for survivors in the rubble of destroyed buildings are ongoing.

Two drones launched towards Eilat, injuries reported

The Israeli army says defence systems intercepted a drone coming from the “east” while another one fell inside the port city of Eilat.

“Two unmanned aerial vehicles [UAVs] were detected approaching the Eilat area from the east. A missile ship of the navy … intercepted one UAV, and the fall of another UAV was identified in the Eilat area”, the army said in a statement.

Israeli media earlier reported sirens sounding in Eilat. Israeli first responders reported two minor injuries from the attack.

Islamic Resistance in Iraq claims drone attacks on Israel

Islamic Resistance in Iraq called for intensified attacks on Israel as it claimed responsibility for an attack by two unmanned aerial vehicles on the southern city of Eilat.

In a statement on Telegram, it said the attacks were “in support of the people in Palestine and Lebanon and in response to the massacres” committed by Israel.

The Israeli army said it intercepted a drone launched towards Eilat from “the east”, adding another fell inside the port city. Two people were slightly wounded.

Earlier, Iraq’s Kataib Hezbollah spokesperson Abu Ali al-Askari issued an appeal for ramped-up operations against Israel. “We hope factions in the Islamic Resistance, which support Palestine and Lebanon, will increase the number and severity of their operations,” Askari said.

Israeli air raids on Rafah kill 4 Palestinians

The Israeli military struck a house northeast of Rafah city, killing four people, two of them women, the Palestinian civil defence agency says.

One killed in Israeli attack on displaced family in central Gaza

Gaza’s civil defence agency says several more were wounded in an Israeli air strike that hit a tent sheltering the Fayyad family, west of Deir el-Balah.

Definitely less news coming out of Gaza now, as well as the West Bank. Getting buried under the new assault on Lebanon, by design...

Palestinian shot and killed by Israeli forces south of Jenin

At least four others were wounded by Israeli gunfire in the town of Anza, south of Jenin in the northern occupied West Bank, Wafa news agency reports. It identified the slain Palestinian woman as 37-year-old Zuhour Qassem Amro.

Among the four injured are two women, a child, and a man in his 70s, Wafa said.

Israeli soldiers raided the town amid heavy gunfire. One Palestinian was also arrested.

Israeli forces raid Jenin refugee camp, bomb house

Israeli forces stormed Jenin and encircled the city’s two hospitals, Wafa news agency reports, before making their way into Jenin refugee camp where they detained at least five people.

The official news agency said the arrests were made in the camp’s al-Jabriyat neighbourhood where Israeli soldiers also blew up a home. Soldiers also stormed houses in other neighbourhoods across the camp, and stationed their vehicles near the entrance.

In others parts of the city, Israeli army bulldozers razed basic infrastructure, destroying streets and sidewalks, Wafa said.

Netanyahu UN speech ‘at a point of being persona non grata’

The UN Security Council holds an emergency meeting in about one hour with the focus on Israel’s deadly assault on Lebanon.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, meanwhile, is expected to address the UN General Assembly on Friday. He will seek to persuade a world growing increasingly hostile to Israel’s war on Gaza and attacks on Lebanon that the aims are justified.

“He arrives almost at a point of being persona non grata,” said Alon Liel, a former director-general of Israel’s foreign ministry and outspoken critic of Netanyahu. “There is no doubt that he knows how to deliver a speech. I think the world buys his chatter less and less.”

Yossi Shain, a professor of international relations at Georgetown and Tel Aviv University, said Netanyahu’s speeches abroad were often meant to impress audiences at home, and this one is no different.

“In his view, any such trips to New York, to the grand stage of world affairs, he considers an advantage,” said Shain.

‘Stop the killing and destruction’: UN chief

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres addressed an emergency UN Security Council meeting on the burgeoning conflict in Lebanon after days of deadly Israeli attacks. Lebanon cannot become another Gaza, said the UN chief.

“I implore the Council to work in lockstep to help put out this fire. The parties must immediately return to a cessation of hostilities … Civilians must be protected. Civilian infrastructure must not be targeted. The safety and security of all UN assets must be ensured. International law must be respected,” said Guterres.

“To all sides, let’s say in one clear voice: Stop the killing and destruction, tone down the rhetoric and threats, and step back from the brink.” Guterres said an all-out war must be avoided “at all costs”.

French FM unveils proposal for 21-day ceasefire at UN Security Council

Jean-Noël Barrot, the Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, told the UN Security Council that France is working with the United States on a proposal for a temporary pause in fighting between Israel and Hezbollah.

“In recent days, we’ve worked with our American partners on a temporary ceasefire platform of 21 days to allow for negotiations,” Barrot told the emergency meeting in New York.

“This platform will be made public very soon, and we are counting on both parties to accept it without delay.” Barrot added that he will go to Beirut by the end of the week to work on negotiations there.

US hopes to release Israel-Hezbollah ceasefire proposal as soon as tonight

Senior United States officials who have been furiously working to hammer out a framework for a ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah are hoping to announce a proposal as soon as tonight, sources tell CNN.

One of those sources also said that the effort to mediate a ceasefire began in earnest for the Biden administration after President Joe Biden’s national security adviser, Jake Sullivan, spoke on the phone with top Israeli official Ron Dermer on Monday.

The proposed ceasefire plan, when announced, is expected to come from the US and other nations. It would then require agreement from Israel and Hezbollah.

A European diplomat expressed skepticism about the prospects of the efforts succeeding, saying they see “no reason to be optimistic right now.” The diplomat added that ongoing talks are pushing ahead but the “situation is deteriorating and escalating by the hour.”

Biden has been discussing the escalating hostilities in the Middle East with various world leaders this week on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York City. On Wednesday, Biden discussed the matter with French President Emmanuel Macron, the White House said.

Israeli fighter jets forced to flee Lebanon airspace: Hezbollah

Hezbollah says its air defence units engaged and successfully forced two Israeli aircraft to leave Lebanese airspace “using appropriate weapons” near the Lebanese towns of Hula and Meiss el-Jabal.

Fighters also targeted the Kiryat Motzkin settlement with a barrage of rockets and carried out a second round of strikes with Fadi-1 missiles.

Israel has launched waves of deadly air strikes on Lebanon since Monday, killing nearly 700 people. The international community has warned against Israeli attacks on Lebanon as they raise the spectre of spreading the Gaza war regionally.

IMF says Israel-Hezbollah conflict inflicting heavy human, infrastructure toll

The International Monetary Fund says it’s closely watching the escalating Israel-Hezbollah conflict’s impact on Lebanon, which is already suffering heavy human and infrastructure costs.

“We are monitoring with grave concern the escalation of conflict in the region,” an unnamed IMF spokesperson said in an emailed statement to the Reuters news agency.

“The current conflict is inflicting a heavy human toll, damaging physical infrastructure in southern Lebanon, and exacerbating Lebanon’s already fragile macroeconomic and social situation.”

Mass displacement as Israel strikes Lebanon

Situation ‘very tense’ in Beirut as hundreds of thousands flee Israeli bombing

Hundreds of thousands of thousands of people have moved up here to Beirut. In Beirut itself, I have been speaking to people who are very worried about the situation. They’ve been thinking of moving out of Beirut and up to Mount Lebanon.

But then we had that strike today on the Keserwan district up on Mount Lebanon, so they are rethinking their plans. In fact, people have been talking to me about moving up further north, up to Tripoli – the city in the north of Lebanon.

The situation here in Beirut is very tense.

Every night, we can hear the Israeli drones flying overhead, and now there are these reports of the Israeli military saying there are plans for a possible ground offensive in Lebanon.

I think the situation is very tense and a lot of people are watching this UN General Assembly very closely because I think the next 24 hours are going to be very important for Lebanon.

UN Security Council meets after ‘bloodiest day in a generation’ in Lebanon

The secretary-general described Monday as the bloodiest day in a generation in Lebanon. But the whole point of this meeting, which was urgently convened at the request of France, is to establish some kind of consensus as to a way forward.

The United States made it clear it still continues to support Israel’s right to defend itself, as it puts it.

The one notable point though, in what was said is that the US is working on a proposal with other parties designed to bring this conflict to an end. We may hear more about that in the hours ahead.

We also heard from the US that, basically, Hezbollah is to blame for this ongoing conflict because of its attacks on Israel. But the Russian deputy ambassador earlier on made clearer the timeline of events that led to the crisis in Lebanon, making very clear that it all began with Israel’s war in Gaza.

Well it all began with the Balfour declaration in 1917 leading to the one-sided UN partition plan in 1947 while the indigenous people were already being massacred and displaced under UK occupation.

Israel envoy: Diplomacy on Lebanon preferred, but we’ll use ‘all means’ necessary

Israel’s ambassador to the United Nations says his country is open to a diplomatic solution on Lebanon but promised to use “all means” in its goal of stopping Hezbollah attacks on civilians in the north.

“We are grateful for all those who are making a sincere effort with diplomacy to avoid escalation, to avoid a full war,” Israel’s ambassador to the UN, Danny Danon, said.

But he added if negotiations fail: “We will use all means at our disposal, in accordance with international law, to achieve our aims.”

Danon said Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is set to arrive on Thursday and address the UN General Assembly on Friday.

That ship has sailed long ago, sunk to the bottom and covered with sand. Your interpretation of international law is, Israel can do no wrong.

Israel ‘spreading terror’ in Lebanon, PM tells UN Security Council

Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati has told an emergency meeting of the UNSC that Israel “is spreading terror and fear among the Lebanese citizens in full view of the world”.

“Israel is violating our sovereignty by sending their warplanes and drones to our skies,” he said. “Hundreds of civilians lost their life within a few days. Hospitals are overwhelmed, unable to accept more injured.”

“Lebanon is today victim of an electronic cyber aggression and of an air and maritime aggression that can turn into a ground aggression and can become an all-out regional war,” Mikati warned the council, before imploring its 15 members to respond.

“I hope to come back to my country armed with your explicit stance calling for the cessation of this aggression and for the respect of the sovereignty and safety of my country,” he said.

‘Hell is breaking loose in Lebanon,’ warns UN secretary-general

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres addressed an emergency UN Security Council meeting on the burgeoning conflict in Lebanon after days of deadly Israeli attacks.

The UN chief said Lebanon cannot become another Gaza and an all-out war must be avoided “at all costs”. “I implore the Council to work in lockstep to help put out this fire. The parties must immediately return to a cessation of hostilities,” Guterres said.

“Civilians must be protected. Civilian infrastructure must not be targeted. The safety and security of all UN assets must be ensured. International law must be respected,” he said.

“To all sides, let’s say in one clear voice: Stop the killing and destruction, tone down the rhetoric and threats, and step back from the brink,” he added.

To the UN, for once do your fucking job.
