Death toll in Israeli attacks on southern Lebanon rises

Lebanon’s Health Ministry says the Israeli air strikes in Dheira killed four people and wounded two.

Two bombs hit the southern Lebanese village, three medics were also wounded and there was “significant damage” to the ambulance they were in when an Israeli air raid hit the Wadi Hamool area, according to the National News Agency.

The state-run agency also reported that Israeli jets carried out “three consecutive raids” close to midnight on the town of Aita al-Shaab in southern Lebanon.

It said an Israeli drone launched an attack in the town of Hula and the Israeli military fired artillery shells at two more towns in southern Lebanon.

Videos shared online also show a large explosion after an attack in Baalbek, deep inside Lebanon.

Hezbollah confirms four fighters killed in Israeli air strikes

Hezbollah says on its Telegram channel that four of its fighters, all from southern Lebanon, have been killed in Israeli attacks. As we reported earlier, Israeli warplanes attacked the village of Dheira with two bombs, with Lebanon’s Health Ministry also confirming four deaths.

Hezbollah claimed 12 attacks on Israeli positions today, which included multiple volleys of rockets and several drones.

The armed Lebanese group also said it fired a surface-to-air missile at an Israeli military jet that had violated Lebanese airspace, forcing it to return.

One killed, 20 wounded in Israeli attack on Lebanon’s Bekaa Valley

Lebanon’s Health Ministry said at least one person has been killed and 20 others wounded in an Israeli attack on the Bekaa Valley in eastern Lebanon at about midnight

The ministry said one person was in critical condition while “eight children and a pregnant woman were moderately wounded”.

A source from a local hospital told the AFP news agency that five children, no older than 10, all from the same family, were among the wounded. The attack came hours after another Israeli strike killed four Hezbollah fighters in southern Lebanon.

Hezbollah said it launched “explosive-laden drones” and “intense rocket barrages” at several Israeli positions in the occupied Golan Heights in response to Monday night’s strikes on the Bekaa Valley.

Canada refuses to comment on US sale of Canadian-made weapons to Israel

https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2024/8/20/canada-refuses-to-comment-on-us-sale-of-canadian-made-weapons-to-israel

Canada has refused to comment on a planned US sale of Canadian-made weapons to Israel, after news of the deal drew rebuke from rights advocates who argue the arms will help fuel Israeli human rights abuses against Palestinians.

Canada announced earlier this year that it would not authorise new export permits for weapons to Israel amid mass protests over the country’s war in the Gaza Strip, which has killed more than 40,000 Palestinians over nearly 11 months.

But rights advocates quickly noted that Canada has not revoked existing arms export permits, nor would the prohibition affect Canadian weapons and components that first go to the US before they are shipped to Israel.

Truce deal elusive as Blinken wraps up Middle East trip

In his ninth visit to the region since Israel’s war on Gaza began, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken made a last-ditch effort to secure a ceasefire.

On Tuesday, he landed in Egypt, where he sat down with President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi. The Egyptian leader warned of the growing danger of a wider regional conflict. And finally, to the Qatari capital, to consult with officials there.

Before leaving Doha, Blinken once again stressed the importance of getting a deal over the line, stating that “time is of the essence” not just for the Israeli captives and Palestinian civilians, but also to prevent a regional escalation.

Earlier, during his trip to Israel, Blinken said Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu agreed to the so-called bridging proposal presented by mediators last week, a proposal Hamas said has added conditions.

The Israeli premier has also since told family members of Israeli captives held in Gaza that he is still not sure about the possibility of a deal.

Meanwhile, Hamas says the latest proposal is a reversal from the original framework outlined by US President Joe Biden back in May, and as Blinken wraps up his latest round of shuttle diplomacy in the Middle East, more talks are expected in Cairo later in the week.

But a ceasefire deal is still nowhere in sight.

Casualties as Israeli forces attack Jabalia, Deir el-Balah, Rafah and Khan Younis

Our colleagues at Al Jazeera Arabic are reporting that several people were killed and wounded after Israeli forces bombed a residential building in the Tall az-Zaatar area of the Jabalia refugee camp in northern Gaza.

AJA also reported that Israeli forces blew up buildings in the southern city of Rafah and the Hamad neighbourhood in nearby Khan Younis.

It also said Israeli forces were shelling eastern parts of central Deir el-Balah.

Farmers killed by Israeli tanks near Rafah

Since the early hours of this morning, we have heard loud explosions in central Gaza, especially Deir el-Balah, where hundreds of thousands of Palestinians are seeking refuge.

Right now, the army is operating just a few kilometres from where we are. Explosions have been hitting houses and civil infrastructure in the eastern part of the city. Operations are also going on in Khan Younis city and show no sign of ending.

In Rafah, a civil defence crew recovered the bodies of four Palestinians. They were farmers working near al-Mawasi who were killed by Israeli tanks, which opened fire on them without warning.

The casualties come after our earlier reports of Israeli attacks on buildings in Rafah and Khan Younis’s nearby Hamad neighbourhood.

More Palestinians killed, wounded in Israeli attacks overnight

The Wafa news agency is reporting that at least one person was killed after Israeli jets bombed the home of the al-Khatib family in the Tall az-Zaatar area in the Jabalia refugee camp.

It said dozens more were wounded when Israeli forces opened fire on shelters in al-Mawasi in southern Gaza and bombed the house of the al-Salhi family in Block C of the central Nuseirat refugee camp.

Wafa also reported Israeli attacks in the following locations:

  • Air raid on Satar area in southern Khan Younis.
  • Artillery and missile attacks on the town of al-Qarara, north of Khan Younis.
  • Shelling and gun attacks in northern Gaza City’s Zeitoun, Sabra and Tal al-Hawa neighbourhoods.
  • Air attack on the Zeitoun neighbourhood.
  • Air attack near the al-Qastal Towers, east of the central city of Deir el-Balah.

New evacuation orders for Deir el-Balah

Israel’s military has ordered residents of several neighbourhoods in Deir el-Balah to flee.

In a post on X, the military’s Arabic-language spokesperson, Avichay Adraee, posted a map with designated blocks in the southern part of the city that are now considered a “dangerous combat zone”.

He said the military would soon “act forcefully” against fighters there, and urged residents to head westwards immediately.

Fifty killed, 124 injured in Israeli attacks on Gaza in last 24 hours

The latest casualties bring the total toll of the war to 40,223 killed and 92,981 injured, said the enclave’s Health Ministry. There are more unrecorded victims still trapped in areas inaccessible to ambulance crews and civil defence teams, the ministry added.

One killed in southern Deir el-Balah

Israeli artillery strikes have killed one person and injured others in the Abu ‘Arif area, southeast of Deir el-Balah, report our colleagues on the ground.

The casualties come shortly after Israel’s military promptly ordered several neighbourhoods of southern Deir el-Balah to evacuate, claiming it would launch “forceful” operations there.

Civilians come under heavy Israeli gunfire in Khan Younis

Video posted on Instagram, and verified by Al Jazeera, shows the moment a gathering of civilians came under attack by what they described as an Israeli army drone, a quadcopter.

The harrowing scenes show people fleeing by car, bicycle and donkey cart as the loud sounds of gunfire can be heard in the background. Our correspondents on the ground have been reporting heavy clashes in southern Gaza City all day.

Gaza Media Office says another journalist killed by Israeli attacks

The office has decried in a statement the killing of Hamza Abdul Rahman Murtaja by the Israeli army today.

It said that Murtaja worked as a photographer and reported for several different media outlets, and called on “the international community and international organizations and those related to journalistic work in the world to deter the [Israeli] occupation and prosecute it in international courts” for the killing of journalists in Gaza.

The office added that Murtaja’s death brings the number of journalists killed by the Israeli army in Gaza since October 7 to 170.

Palestinian man wounded as Israeli forces raid West Bank cities, towns

Our colleagues at Al Jazeera Arabic are reporting that Israeli forces have shot and wounded a young Palestinian man during a raid on the old city of Nablus in the occupied West Bank this morning.

AJA cited medics at the Palestinian Red Crescent.

The Wafa news agency also reported several Israeli raids across the occupied West Bank, including:

  • the suburb of Shuweika in Tulkarem, where Israeli soldiers arrested a young man
  • the village of Faroun, south of Tulkarem, where they arrested another young man
  • the villages of Beit Qad and Faqqua, where soldiers ransacked and searched a home
  • the town of Attil, north of Tulkarem, where soldiers stormed several homes and destroyed belongings.

Israeli banks rejecting shekel transfers from Palestinian banks

Israeli banks have stopped accepting shekel cash transfers from Palestinian banks in the occupied West Bank, say Palestinian officials, a policy that could block Palestinians from paying for crucial goods and services.

“In the next few days, banks in Palestine will be unable to finance trade operations between Palestinian and Israeli merchants, as their ability to make financial transfers is directly connected to shipping the accumulated shekel banknotes to their Israeli counterparts,” warned the Palestine Monetary Authority.

The office of Israel’s Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, who in June renewed a waiver enabling Israeli banks to work with their Palestinian counterparts in the West Bank, has not commented on the matter.

Smotrich, who leads a pro-settler party, has frequently utilised his ministry to apply financial pressure on Palestinians, including by signing an order in June to withhold tens of millions in tax funds owed to the Palestinian Authority.

Jordan warns of ‘dangerous deterioration’ in occupied West Bank

In a phone call with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi says there is a need for “effective, practical steps” to stop Israeli violations in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem.

Safadi also stressed the need to stop all illegal Israeli measures in the West Bank and Israeli violations of the historical and legal status quo at Islamic and Christian holy sites in occupied Jerusalem.

He stressed that Jordan would take all necessary measures to stop attacks on holy sites and is preparing to take the necessary legal measures in international courts against these attacks, “which constitute a clear violation of international law and a dangerous escalation that Jordan will confront by all possible means”.

Blinken stressed the US position on the necessity of respecting the historical status quo for the holy sites.

Hezbollah claims attack on northern Israel

The Lebanese armed group said it fired artillery shells at Israeli soldiers in the vicinity of the Zar’it military barracks in northern Israel. The claim came as Israel’s YNet News reported rocket warning sirens in Zar’it.

Earlier, YNet said Hezbollah had fired some 135 rockets at Israel on Tuesday.

Israel confirms attacks on Lebanon’s Bekaa Valley

The Israeli military says its fighter jets carried out attacks on Hezbollah’s ammunition depots and an air defence system in the Bekaa Valley, deep inside Lebanon. “Following the strikes, secondary explosions were identified, indicating the presence of large amounts of weapons in the facilities that were struck,” it said.

The military also claimed attacks on Hezbollah positions in southern Lebanon, including Abu Sash, Wadi Hamool, Aita al-Shaab, Ramiya and Talousa.

Earlier, we reported that Israeli attacks on Bekaa killed at least one person and wounded 20 others. Videos posted online, verified by Al Jazeera, showed the moment Israeli jets attacked Bekaa.

Rocket attack targets Golan Heights, one injured: Reports

Dozens of rockets, about 30, have been fired from Lebanon towards the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, reports our correspondent on the ground. Some of the rockets hit the Israeli settlement of Katzrin, damaging a building and causing fires to break out, Israeli media reported.

At least one person – a 30-year-old man – has been injured by shrapnel from the rocket barrage, according to Israel’s Army Radio.

Israeli shelling kills one in southern Lebanon

Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency reports that an Israeli army attack on the village of Khiam, which abuts the country’s border with Israel, has caused the death of one person. It said that the deceased is of Syrian nationality.

Video shows house hit by Hezbollah rocket in Golan Heights

At least 30 rockets were fired, according to our correspondent on the ground, in what Hezbollah said in an official statement was an attack targeted at the Israeli army’s Tsnobar logistics base. Israeli media is reporting the size of the salvo at about 50 rockets.

The group said that the attack was carried out with Katyusha rockets and was in retaliation for yesterday’s massive Israeli air strikes on the Bekaa Valley, which injured at least 20 people and killed one.

Video taken by Magen David Adom, Israel’s paramedic service, and posted by Israeli Army Radio, shows a house in the Israeli settlement of Katzrin burning after it was hit by one of Hezbollah’s rockets.

Government has ‘lost control’ of north, says Israel’s Lapid

Opposition leader Yair Lapid has blamed the government for “losing control” of the north after a barrage of missiles from Lebanon struck the illegal settlement of Katzrin, sparking fires and injuring at least one person.

In a post on X, Lapid, a critic of Prime Minister Netanyahu and his coalition government, wrote: “A direct hit in … Katzrin. The government has lost control of the north.”

Lebanon’s FM calls for investigation into Majdal Shams attack

Abdallah Bou Habib, Lebanon’s top diplomat, met today with Major General Patrick Gauchat, chief of the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO).

The country’s National News Agency (NNA) said that Bou Habib expressed hope that the UN would release a report on the Majdal Shams incident during the meeting, saying “This report would clarify the facts and discredit Israel’s justification of ‘self-defense’ for its assault on Beirut’s southern suburbs on July 30, 2024”.

In July, at least 12 people were killed and 30 others wounded in a rocket attack on a football pitch in the town of the Majdal Shams in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights.

Israel blamed Hezbollah for this attack and used it as justification for a strike on Beriut’s southern suburbs, which killed a senior military commander, dramatically escalated regional tensions and brought the Lebanese group and Israel closer to all-out war.

Hezbollah, which has been carrying out daily attacks on Israeli territory in sympathy with Palestinians since last October, denied responsibility for the deaths in Majdal Shams.

According to the NNA, the UN’s Gauchat warned of the increasing risk of escalation along the Lebanon-Israel border and affirmed that UNTSO is actively monitoring the situation on both sides.

One killed by Israeli strike on car in southern Lebanon: Report

A burned-out car hit by a strike on the outskirts of Lebanon’s southern port city of Sidon, on August 21

Lebanon’s National News Agency is reporting that an Israeli air strike has hit a vehicle near the southern Lebanese city of Sidon, killing one person. Lebanon’s An-Nahar newspaper reported several were injured by the attack.

Footage posted by Lebanese media, verified by Al Jazeera’s Sanad fact-checking agency, shows a car in the city engulfed in flames, with thick black smoke rising as a crowd gathers. The strike follows an earlier Israeli attack on the village of Khiam, which killed one person of Syrian descent, according to the National News Agency.

Fatah official killed in Lebanon car strike: Report

People and Lebanese army members gather near a burned-out car after a strike on the outskirts of Lebanon’s southern port city of Sidon, on August 21

The person killed in the attack has been named by Lebanese media as Khalil al-Maqdah, a Palestinian connected to the Fatah movement. Senior Fatah member Fathi Abu al-Aradat told AFP that al-Maqdah was an official with the group.

Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, an armed group in the occupied West Bank with ties to  Fatah, also described Maqdar as one of its leaders. Al-Maqdah’s brother, Munir, who is a brigadier-general in the group, was quoted in Lebanon’s Al Mayadeen as saying, “The path to victory or martyrdom, and assassinations only make us stronger.”

Israeli assassinations becoming near-daily in Lebanon

We are 40km (25 miles) south of Beirut, 55km (34 miles) from the [Israeli] border, the main battleground between Israel and Hezbollah. What we understand from security sources is that there was an apparent Israeli drone strike.

The strike targeted Khalil al-Maqdah, a commander in the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, a loose coalition of Palestinian groups that believe in armed resistance. The Martyrs Brigades issued a statement, calling [al-Maqdah] a commander who played a key role in supporting the Palestinian people and supporting Palestinian resistance in the West Bank.

A short while ago, we saw the Lebanese army take away the car that [al-Maqdah] was targeted in. Israel has been escalating its attacks as of late, expanding the scope of its attacks. And clearly there’s no front line any longer.

Targeted killings are becoming a near-daily occurrence.

Israeli military claims Lebanon car strike

The Israeli military has confirmed it carried out an air strike near Lebanon’s Sidon that killed Khalil al-Maqdah, a Palestinian linked to the Fatah movement and an armed group in the occupied West Bank.

In a statement, Israel’s military accused al-Maqdah of working with his brother, Mounir al-Maqdah, to smuggle weapons into the occupied West Bank, at the behest of Hezbollah and Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

The military said it would continue to strike at Lebanon-based targets who direct “terrorist activity” in the occupied West Bank.

Israel’s assassination of Khalil al-Maqdah aimed at starting ‘full-scale war’: Fatah official

A senior Fatah official has accused Israel of “assassinating” compatriot Khalil al-Maqdah in Lebanon in order to inflame regional conflict.

Speaking to the AFP news agency, Fatah official Tawfiq Tirawy said al-Maqdah’s assassination “is further proof that Israel wants to ignite a full-scale war in the region”.

Israel’s attacks in Lebanon during the Gaza war have killed in excess of 600 people, including more than 130 civilians.

Israel should ‘not miss opportunity’ to strike back at Hezbollah: Ben-Gvir

Israel’s far-right national security minister, Itamar Ben-Gvir, has visited the site of an earlier Hezbollah rocket attack in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights and called for an “unequivocal” response from Israel.

The attack damaged property and injured one person, according to Israeli media.

“You also have to attack, you also have to make a campaign,” Ben-Gvir said while visiting the settlement of Katzrin, according to The Times of Israel. “This is the opportunity we must not miss.”

“The State of Israel needs to respond in the most unequivocal, clearest way,” he said, while lobbying for more influence over Israel’s war policy.

UKMTO flags attack off Yemen’s Hodeidah

The United Kingdom’s Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) says it received reports of an attack some 77 nautical miles (143km) off the Yemeni port city of Hodeidah. It said authorities were still investigating the incident.

UKMTO says ship off Hodeidah hit with projectiles

Earlier, we reported that the United Kingdom’s Maritime Trade Operations said it received reports of an attack some 77 nautical miles (143km) off the Yemeni port city of Hodeidah.

In an update, the organisation says the shipmaster reported being hit by three unidentified projectiles but there were no casualties. The vessel is “not under command”, the UKMTO said, using a nautical term meaning the ship was unable to manoeuvre.

Yemen’s Houthis have launched attacks on international shipping near Yemen since November in solidarity with Palestinians amid Israel’s war on Gaza.

The rebels, who control much of Yemen’s heavily populated north and west, including the capital, Sanaa, have targeted more than 70 vessels with missiles and drones in a campaign that has killed four sailors. They have seized one vessel and sunk two.

Other missiles and drones have been either intercepted by a US-led coalition in the Red Sea or splashed down before reaching their targets.

Ship comes under attack again near Yemen’s Hodeidah

Earlier, we reported that the United Kingdom’s Maritime Trade Operations said it received reports of a ship being hit with three unidentified projectiles some 77 nautical miles (143km) off the Yemeni port city of Hodeidah.

The organisation reports that the ship was hit a fourth time and that ship is currently adrift and unable to move. There is also a fire on board.

The company operating the ship reports that it is a Greek-flagged vessel under the name Sounion.

US, UK ‘working in lockstep’ for a Gaza ceasefire

UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy said he spoke with Blinken to discuss ongoing negotiations for a ceasefire in Gaza and said that the US and UK are “working in lockstep to bring all parties to an agreement”.

“An immediate end to the fighting in Gaza and the release of all hostages is vital,” he added in a post on X.

US has not put enough pressure on Israel in ceasefire talks

Mohamad Elmasry, a professor at the Doha Institute for Graduate Studies, told Al Jazeera that Netanyahu has no intention of ending the war on Gaza and that the Biden administration has failed to press Israel to accept a ceasefire.

“The US has not put adequate pressure on Israel. They’re really not applying any pressure on Israel,” Elmasry said.

He said the current so-called bridging proposal is “an awful deal for the Palestinians” and that the only reason Hamas might accept it is for a few weeks “reprieve” from Israeli bombs.

“This deal is so bad that it’s almost as though the Israelis and the Americans want Hamas to say no, so that they can blame Hamas for holding up the peace process,” he said.

Elmasry added that former US President and Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump also had little interest in seeing a ceasefire soon. Trump “wants to be elected president and he believes that if a ceasefire deal is reached right now, it will help Kamala Harris’s campaign,” he said.

Iran hints at a possible ground attack on Israel

Iran’s mission to the UN has issued a statement reiterating a pledge to retaliate against Israel over the assassination of Hamas’s political chief Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran.

“Iran’s response should have two clear results,” it said, according to the Mehr news agency.

“First, it must punish the aggressor for terror and violation of Iran’s national sovereignty. Second, it should strengthen Iran’s deterrence power and bring the [Israeli] regime deep remorse to prevent any future aggression. Also, Iran’s response should avoid a possible negative impact on a possible [Gaza] ceasefire,” it said.

The statement added that Iran would respond in a time and manner that takes the Israelis by surprise. “Maybe when their eyes are on the sky and the radar screen, they are surprised from the ground, and maybe a combination of the two,” it said.

Blinken says ‘time is of the essence’ to end Gaza war

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken ended his latest regional tour to push for a ceasefire in Gaza in Qatar.

Blinken met Qatari leaders hours after talks with Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi. The US secretary of state said Israel has accepted a so-called bridging proposal and said he’d do everything he could to get Hamas on board.

No he's doing everything to get Netanyahu onboard while making sure Hamas can't accept the bridging proposal. It's not a bridge, it's a brick wall.

Why is Israel demanding to keep control of the Netzarim Corridor?

The Netzarim Corridor, a 7km (4.4-mile) stretch established by the Israeli military that divides northern and southern Gaza, has become a major point of contention in ceasefire negotiations. Israel is now insisting that its forces maintain control over this corridor, directly opposing one of Hamas’s central demands — Israel’s complete withdrawal from Gaza.

Hassan Barari, a professor of international affairs at Qatar University, told Al Jazeera that control of the corridor is crucial for Israel because it allows it to screen any Palestinians moving from south to north. Israel’s military fears that if Palestinians are able to move freely to the north, “it would be an opportunity for Hamas to regroup and attack Israel”, said Barari. “The memory of October 7 is still there.”

However, Barari stated that by including this stipulation in ceasefire demands, Israel is negotiating in bad faith, knowing it is a non-starter for Hamas.

“Hamas wants Israel’s full withdrawal from the entire Strip … and to make sure those who are displaced can return to their homes once and for all,” he said. “Anything short of that Hamas would interpret as a kind of capitulation.”

Bernie Sanders calls for ‘immediate ceasefire’ in DNC speech

The progressive US legislator received applause and cheers from the audience as he briefly addressed the war in Gaza during a speech at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago.

“We must end this horrific war in Gaza,” Sanders said on the second night of the convention. “Bring home the hostages and demand an immediate ceasefire,” he added.

Too bad Bernie can't do anything.

Delegates at DNC hold up names of Palestinians killed in Gaza

Delegates at this year’s DNC include 30 people representing the ‘uncommitted movement’ who hope to influence the Harris-Walz campaign to end unconditional US support for Israel’s war on Gaza.

One of the signs carried the name of Saifeddin Issam Ayad Abutaha, 25, who was among the seven World Central Kitchen workers killed in an Israeli attack on April 4, 2024. Another delegate held a sign with the name of Jihad Khaled Abu Amer, a two year-old killed in an Israeli attack on October 23, 2023.

This would have made an impact with 40,000 people holding up the names of all that have been confirmed killed so far. To visualize, that's the capacity of the Chigao United center and Milwauke Fiserv Forum combined.

That's how many people have been (confirmed) killed by Israel in Gaza so far.

Several pro-Palestinian protesters arrested in Chicago

The Associated Press news agency is reporting that dozens of pro-Palestinian protesters charged a line of police in an “intense standoff” with hundreds of police officers in the US city of Chicago on the second night of the Democratic National Convention.

The confrontations took place in front of a Chicago skyscraper that houses the Israeli consulate, the agency reported. More than a dozen protesters were arrested, it said.

There was no immediate comment from the Chicago Police Department.

The AP said at least 13 pro-Palestinian protesters were arrested in Chicago on Monday for breaching the outer security fence at the venue hosting the DNC.

Ultra-Orthodox protest at military recruitment office

A group of ultra-Orthodox Israelis have staged a protest outside a military recruitment office in Jerusalem where they have been summoned, according to Israeli media reports.

Footage verified by Al Jazeera’s Sanad fact-checking agency shows dozens of protesters shouting angrily, as several clash with police.

Demonstrators yelled phrases such as “We will die and not enlist,” “Nazis” and “To prison and not to the army”, according to The Times of Israel.

In late June, Israel’s Supreme Court ruled that the military must begin drafting ultra-Orthodox men, upending a longstanding arrangement under which they were exempt from compulsory military service.

The decision has antagonised many in the community who oppose conscription, which they believe goes against their way of life.

Three arrested as Israel’s ultra-Orthodox protest conscription

Three members of Israel’s ultra-Orthodox Jewish community have been arrested at a protest against compulsory military service, Israeli media outlet Kan reports.

Israel’s Supreme Court unanimously ruled in late June that the military must begin drafting ultra-Orthodox men for military service, overturning a longstanding practice under which Jewish seminary students were exempt from conscription.

Video from the ground posted on social media, and verified by Al Jazeera’a fact-checking unit, shows demonstrators clashing with police as they try to storm a military recruitment office in Jerusalem.

Translation: Demonstrators tore down fences, dragged rubbish cans and tried to get to the office. The policemen with batons and horsemen drove them away. Among other things, they dragged the rabbis to the centre of the riots and then shouted at the policemen, “Respect for the rabbis.”
