Forums - Politics Discussion - Israel-Hamas war, Gaza genocide

Not sure what even the point of even posting what biden or his administration say, the whole US government is in the pockets of the Israeli lobby and that basically means Palestinians lives don't matter and have no value.

The US holds the key, they're the only ones that can hold Israel back at this point. It's very important to see signs of Biden actually seeing the real scale of what's happening. Whether that be the humanitarian crisis or his eroding support at home. Biden getting more direct in his condemnation of what goes on gives me more hope than the eternal carrot that 'negotiations are close'. Those negotiations between Hamas and Netanyahu are going nowhere without some real pressure on Netanyahu to accept a pause, and only the US can provide any real pressure.

Netanyahu certainly isn't listening to the hostage families

Families of hostages in Gaza express frustrations over Israel's rejection of a deal with Hamas

Families of hostages held in Gaza by Hamas and other protesters take part in a demonstration outside the Israeli cabinet meeting on February 8, in Tel Aviv, Israel

The deadly Hamas attacks of October 7 united a shocked, grieving Israel behind its leaders, burying at a stroke the divisions that had riven the country for years. Four months into the war and with hopes for a new deal to return Israeli hostages from Gaza in doubt, those divisions are re-emerging – and Israelis are increasingly ready to speak their mind.

Many, including the families of those hostages still held by Hamas, direct their anger toward Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who dismissed the terms of a ceasefire and hostage deal put forward by Hamas in forthright terms. Survivors of the October 7 terror attack and the families of hostages were furious at the uncompromising repudiation of a deal that – ultimately – could have resulted in the return of all the remaining hostages in Gaza.

Adina Moshe, 72, who was released during a ceasefire deal agreed in November, was among five former hostages who spoke out against Netanyahu on Wednesday. "Mr. Netanyahu, I’m turning to you. It’s all in your hands. You are the one. And I’m really afraid that if you continue the way you do, the destruction of Hamas, there won’t be any hostages to release,” Moshe said at a news conference for the Hostages and Missing Families Forum.

Israeli defense minister briefs US on IDF operations and "efforts focused on the southern Gaza region"

Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant spoke with US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin on Thursday to discuss the ongoing operations in Gaza, including the military's "major efforts" focused on the southern part of the enclave, according to the readout from the Israeli Minister of Defense's office. The discussion between Gallant and Austin follows comments from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu earlier this week that Israeli soldiers will soon shift the focus of their offensive to Rafah, a southern Gaza Strip city close to the border with Egypt, despite US concerns.

"Minister Gallant opened the discussion by expressing his sincere condolences following the passing of five U.S. Marines," said the readout, released on Friday. "In this regard, he emphasized the importance of U.S. leadership in addressing Iran’s regional aggression and ambitions." Gallant also reiterated the Israeli military's war aims, "including the return of hostages and the destruction of Hamas’ military and governing capabilities," according to the readout. "Minister Gallant briefed the Secretary on developments in the war against the Hamas terrorist organization in Gaza, detailing the IDF’s ongoing operations above and under the ground, with major efforts focused on the southern Gaza region," the Minister of Defense's office added.

South Africa’s foreign minister seeks extra security after threats

South African Foreign Minister Naledi Pandor says she has been receiving threatening messages since her country filed a genocide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice. “I spoke to Police Minister Bheki Cele because of the various messages I am getting, and I felt that it was better we had extra security,” she said, adding that she was more concerned about her family because in some of the social media messages her children are mentioned.

Pandor accused the Israeli intelligence agency of using threats to intimidate those who take a stance against oppression. “The people of the world and Palestine didn’t draw back when the apartheid state [in South Africa] was at its worst. They stood with us in the liberation movement, so we can’t stand back now,” she said. “We must be with Palestinians, and one of the things we must not allow is a failure of courage,” she added.

Gaza Health Ministry: 340 medical personnel killed

Ashraf al-Qudra, spokesperson for Gaza’s Health Ministry, says that since October 7, Israeli forces have killed 340 health personnel and arrested 99. At least 123 ambulances have been destroyed in the same period, he added.

Number of Palestinian detainees increases to about 7,000 in the West Bank

The Commission of Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs and the Palestinian Prisoner’s Society say the Israeli army has arrested 15 people during raids in the occupied West Bank, bringing the total number arrests there since October 7 to 6,940. A joint statement from the two institutions said the latest arrest operations were concentrated in Ramallah, Jerusalem, Tulkarem, Nablus and Jericho.

PRCS: Israeli forces storm al-Amal Hospital in Khan Younis

Israeli occupation forces have raided the Palestinian Red Crescent Society’s headquarters in al-Amal Hospital in Khan Younis, the association says. The hospital has been under Israeli siege for the past 19 days.

UNICEF: Gaza witnessing worst level of child malnutrition worldwide

James Elder, spokesperson for UNICEF, tells Al Jazeera the Gaza Strip has the worst levels of malnutrition of any place in the world. “Gaza is now experiencing the worst level of malnutrition for children,” Elder said, speaking from Geneva. “There is no safe area in Gaza, and civilians must be provided with water and shelter. The [Israeli] restrictions imposed make it difficult for us to carry out our work in the Gaza Strip.”

Gaza media office: Famine worsening in north

The Government Media Office in the Gaza Strip holds the US and Israel responsible for the “escalating famine” in northern Gaza, saying it’s worsening day by day. “We immediately demand the entry of a thousand trucks daily into northern Gaza until it recovers from the famine and its effects,” the office said in a statement.

About 300,000 people face famine in northern Gaza. The extent of the population’s hunger eclipsed even the near-famines in Afghanistan and Yemen of recent years. According to UN figures, the entire population in Gaza is in food crisis with at least 576,600 at catastrophic or starvation levels.

Situation in Gaza worse two weeks after genocide ruling

Two weeks since the International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruling, the situation for civilians in Gaza has become even worse, according to humanitarian organisation Islamic Relief. The group warned Israel’s attack on Rafah “will have catastrophic consequences for civilians”.

Since the ICJ ruling, “thousands more people have been killed and injured, and famine is becoming more likely every day as the Israeli siege continues to cut families off from food, healthcare and water”, said Islamic Relief. “Israel is starving us. We either get killed by bullets or starvation. My children and I haven’t eaten fruit or vegetables for months, and people get killed when they try to meet aid trucks arriving from the UN.” Islamic Relief called on world leaders and governments to demand an “immediate ceasefire and implementation of the ICJ ruling”.

If attacks don’t kill Gaza’s people, starvation and disease will: Aid group

International aid organisations warn any major operation in Rafah would compound what is already a humanitarian catastrophe. “If they aren’t killed in the fighting, Palestinian children, women and men will be at risk of dying by starvation or disease,” said Bob Kitchen of the International Rescue Committee. “There will no longer be a single ‘safe’ area for Palestinians to go to.”

Israel’s four-month air, sea and ground offensive – among the most destructive in recent history – has driven most people from their homes and pushed one-quarter of the population towards starvation. Netanyahu says the offensive will continue and expand until “total victory” over Hamas.

Israel ramps up deadly attacks on Gaza’s Rafah despite warnings

Israel is ramping up its attacks on Rafah as it prepares to mount a ground offensive despite warnings of “catastrophic” consequences for displaced Palestinians. The military launched air strikes and tanks fired artillery on the southern city housing 1.4 million people, which has been described by Israel as a “safe zone“.

The United States, the main military and financial backer of Israel and its war on Gaza, has cautioned against a large-scale offensive into Rafah, warning of “disaster” because of the large number of civilians sheltering in the city.

‘Hunger and disease will skyrocket’ if Rafah is attacked: UNICEF

The UN children’s agency warned against an Israeli military escalation in Rafah noting there are more than 600,000 children in the area. UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell says an attack on Rafah would mark “another devastating turn in a war” that has killed nearly 28,000 people.

She said it could leave thousands more dead through violence or lack of essential services, and further disrupt humanitarian assistance. “We need Gaza’s last remaining hospitals, shelters, markets and water systems to stay functional,” Russell said. “Without them, hunger and disease will skyrocket, taking more child lives.” More than half of the Gaza Strip’s 2.3 million people have fled to Rafah, heeding Israeli evacuation orders ahead of the military’s expanding ground offensive.

Yes, but things are slowly changing. Whether it will be enough to actually get anywhere, I don't know.

Will Israel listen to the US?

We’re unlikely to see the United States give up on its support for Israel. But yesterday, Joe Biden’s White House issued a memorandum which tightens up the obligations of the White House and the Congress to ensure that international recipients of US military aid adhere to international law. And there are mechanisms in that to make sure that the president acts if he has been told by the US State Department that recipients are not compliant with international law. Will Israel listen to this?

We understand that the Rafah operation has been delayed. Is that because they’re still tidying up in Khan Younis? Is it because they were giving space for ceasefire negotiations to play out? Or, is it because they are listening to the United States.

We don’t know yet, but there are also reports in Israeli media, citing unnamed officials, saying that when Israeli forces do go into Rafah, it’s unlikely to be a wide-scale assault as they have done in previous parts of the Gaza Strip. It’s more likely to be targeted raids, but we’ll have to wait and see as to whether that plays out or not.

Even that still sounds too optimistic when this is reported right alongside

Bodies blown out of building bombed by Israel in Rafah: Witness

Salem Al Rayyes, a Palestinian freelance journalist living at a camp for displaced people in southern Rafah city, says children are among the dead when an Israeli missile slammed into a house in an area nearby. “They were asleep in the early hours of Friday around dawn,” he wrote on Facebook. “The explosion rocked the ground under our feet and the sound still echoes in our ears.”

He said the bodies of victims “flew from the third floor before they fell on the ground outside the building [and] on the cars inside the narrow alley and in the vicinity of nearby houses”.

Women and children main casualties of Israeli strikes

We’re seeing more targeting of residential homes in the eastern part of Rafah – an area that’s very close to the Egyptian-Gaza border. We also see targeting of the western part of the city, which is a densely populated area with buildings very close to each other and the evacuation zones to further the western part of the city.

So far, we’ve seen eight people from two families killed in residential homes where they had been sheltering. Most of the casualties now are women and children, and that’s the pattern that we’ve been seeing over and over. They are the dominating casualty figures right now compared to the overall casualties. But an even more shocking pattern that we’re witnessing is the fact that every day we’re seeing almost 120 people being killed, and this is something that’s been going on for quite a while.

Yea will israel listen to the US lol it's obviously just a act to no make the biden not look evil and try to get some votes. yea israel is gonna listen mean while they wanna rush billions in aid for weapons to kill more children.

Now this is delusional, there is no where left to go

Netanyahu directs military to draw up plan for "evacuation of the population" from Rafah

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has directed the military to plan for the “evacuation of the population” from Rafah alongside the defeat of Hamas in that southern Gaza city, his office said in a statement on Friday. More than 1.3 million people are believed to be in Rafah, the majority displaced from other parts of Gaza, according to the United Nations.

Netanyahu on Thursday said that the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) would “soon go into Rafah, Hamas’s last bastion.” In the statement issued Friday, the Israeli Prime Minister’s Office said that it was not possible to both eliminate Hamas and leave “four Hamas battalions in Rafah.” "On the other hand, it is clear that a massive operation in Rafah requires the evacuation of the civilian population from the combat zones,” it added. “That is why the Prime Minister directed the IDF and the defense establishment to bring to the Cabinet a dual plan for both the evacuation of the population and the disbanding of the battalions.”

Rafah is the last major population center in Gaza not occupied by the IDF.

NGOs warn Israeli ground offensive in Rafah could turn city into "zone of bloodshed"

As civilians brace themselves for a potentially imminent Israeli incursion into the border city of Rafah, several non-governmental organizations have issued warnings about the humanitarian consequences for the city. The Israel Defense Forces will “soon go into Rafah, Hamas’s last bastion,” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Thursday. The US would not support an Israeli military operation in Rafah “without serious planning,” US State Department deputy spokesperson Vedant Patel said Thursday.

An estimated 1.3 million people are currently in Rafah, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs has estimated.

The Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC): Rafah could soon turn "into a zone of bloodshed and destruction that people won’t be able to escape," it said in a press release Thursday. "Attacks in areas where they provide food, water and shelter means this life-saving support will be impeded, if not entirely stopped," cautioned Angelita Caredda, an NRC regional director.

United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF): The UN agency also shared its fears for the over 600,000 children sheltering in Rafah, many of whom have "been displaced from other parts of Gaza."

As months of heavy fighting in the north have practically wiped out healthcare and humanitarian facilities in the north, officials are calling for the scant services that remain in the south to be protected.

There is nothing to return to in the North, evacuation isn't possible

Israeli forces search hospital in Khan Younis, says Palestine Red Crescent Society

Israeli forces in Gaza on Friday entered and began to search Al Amal Hospital in Khan Younis, the Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS) said in a statement. “The occupation forces stormed Al-Amal Hospital and began to search it,” the PRCS said. The organization on Thursday reported “intense and continuous gunfire” near the hospital.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has not yet commented on the claim. CNN has asked the Israeli military about the operation. The IDF on Friday said that its troops were “continuing to conduct targeted raids in western Khan Yunis.”

Where things stand: Around 220 patients and staff remain at the hospital following an evacuation last week, according to the PRCS. “We are facing difficulty communicating with our crews inside the hospital, as they are not responding via wireless communication devices,” the PRCS said. “It’s crucial to highlight that Khan Yunis has been experiencing a communication blackout for about a month.”

Around 8,000 displaced people were last week evacuated from Al Amal Hospital and PRCS’ Khan Younis headquarters, according to the PRCS.

Red Crescent loses contact with its medical teams in al-Amal Hospital

The Palestinian Red Crescent Society says it has completely lost contact with its teams working at al-Amal Hospital in Khan Younis, as a result of the continuing Israeli raid on the facility that began two hours ago.

Al-Amal Hospital and the Nasser Medical Complex have both been targeted and besieged for the past 19 days, and doctors have warned of the depletion of medical supplies, fuel, and oxygen shortages.

Egypt responds to Biden remarks on Sisi stopping aid into Gaza, saying Israeli bombardment prevented aid entry

Israel had bombed Rafah four times and damaged the crossing, therefore preventing the entry of aid into Gaza, the Egyptian presidency said in a statement. “Egypt — from the first moment — opened the Rafah crossing on its part without restrictions or conditions, and mobilized humanitarian aid in large quantities … but the continued bombing of the Palestinian side of the crossing by Israel, which was repeated four times, prevented the entry of aid,” the statement said.

The statement was issued in response to US President Joe Biden's remarks on Thursday, saying that Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi Sisi did not want to “open up the gate to allow humanitarian material to get in” but he “talked to him.” The presidency said that once the Israeli bombing stopped, it repaired the crossing to allow the entry of aid into Gaza.

Half of UN requests to deliver aid in Gaza denied, UNRWA says

The UN's main relief agency in Gaza said Friday that half of its aid mission requests to deliver aid in Gaza since the beginning of the year have been denied. The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) has not been able to deliver aid in Gaza since January 23, agency Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini said on X, adding that people in the territory are on the verge of famine.

"The @UN has identified deep pockets of starvation and hunger in northern #Gaza where people are believed to be on the verge of famine," Lazzarini said. "At least 300,000 people living in the area depend on our assistance for their survival. Preventing access prevents lifesaving humanitarian aid. With the necessary political will, this can be easily reversed." The UN's World Food Program (WFP) warned Thursday on X that "2.2 million people in Gaza live in inhumane conditions, facing starvation, famine, disease" and "the winter cold is adding to their suffering."

CNN has reached out to Israel’s Coordinator of the Government Activities in the Territories and Israeli Defense Forces for comment on Lazzarini’s statement.

Mark Zuckerberg needs to be charged at the ICC as well. Meta has previously enabled genocide in Myanmar.

Meta may flag more social posts containing word ‘zionist’ as anti-Semitic

US newspaper The Washington Post says it has seen internal guidance from tech giant Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, that shows a debate is occurring within the company over how to flag user posts containing the word “zionist”. The Washington Post says the move would be to “counter a surge of anti-Semitism online”, and could set the company up for a clash over censorship, as users continue to post about Israel’s continuing war on Gaza.

To date, the war has killed at least 27,947 Palestinians and wounded 67,459 others.

The social media company has reportedly briefed some advocacy groups, both Jewish and Palestinian, on the possible change, which would expand “how it enforces its ban against hate speech to include more uses of the term, especially when it might appear as a hateful substitute for ‘Jews’ or ‘Israelis,'” the Post says, citing “people who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss internal matters” at Meta.

Yesterday, The Palestinian Digital Rights Coalition, a social media watchdog group, sent letters to Meta, X, Telegram and TikTok drawing attention to the proliferation of dehumanising rhetoric against Palestinians on their platforms amid the war on Gaza.

Gaza rights group says ‘time is running out’ to stop Rafah incursion

The Gaza-based rights group Al-Mezan Center has said that the international community must mobilise swiftly to stop an anticipated Israeli assault on Rafah, where more than one million displaced Palestinians are hemmed in with nowhere to flee. “For months, Al-Mezan Center warned of Israel’s evacuation orders as a pretext to push #Gaza’s population closer to the border with Egypt in preparation for their mass deportation,” the group said in a social media post today.

“Time is running out: the international community must act now to halt the ground invasion of Rafah.”

Rafah operation must be stopped ‘before it’s too late’

Al Jazeera senior political analyst Marwan Bishara says Israel’s planned operation in Rafah has revived fears of forced expulsion of Palestinians from Gaza and that countries, such as the United States, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia, must exert all possible leverage to prevent the assault from moving forward. “He [Netanyahu] is adamant about continuing to the southern tip of Gaza, where, as we’ve heard from our correspondent, over one million Palestinians are concentrated,” he said.

“This means so many things can go wrong now, in terms of the mass massacre of people, or, what we’ve been fearing all along, not just a massacre of people but the expulsion of the Palestinians into the Sinai,” he added. “This is the time for whoever has leverage, or for whoever cares, especially those in Washington, those in London, but also those in Riyadh and Cairo, to move now, before it’s too late,” he said.

Rafah invasion could lead to ‘military tension’ between Egypt and Israel

Sara Kira, founder and director at the European North African Centre for Research, told Al Jazeera that Egypt is trying to push Hamas to be flexible in their demands from an unwavering Israel. “Netanyahu has again become the hardliner for this peace plan,” she said, adding that the Israeli prime minister has called Hamas’s request for the destroyed hospitals and shelters in Gaza to be rebuilt “delusional”.

She added that if Israel starts bombarding Rafah, the people will have nowhere to go except for the Egyptian borders. “And that’s crossing the Philadelphia axis which Egypt has declared as a red line because that might cause, again, military tension with Israel,” she said.

Egypt stepping up security near border with Gaza: Report

The Reuters news agency has reported that Egypt has been taking steps to bolster security near the border with Gaza, deploying 40 tanks and armoured personnel carriers to northeastern Sinai over the last two weeks. The report, which cites two anonymous Egyptian security officials, comes as Israel prepares for an incursion into Rafah near the border with Egypt. Tensions between the two countries have also simmered over a possible Israeli effort to take control of the border area known as the Philadelphi corridor.

Since the beginning of the current war, Egypt has feared that Israeli forces may expel Gaza’s population into the Sinai.

Report: Israel has informed several countries of Rafah assault plans

Israeli broadcaster KANN says that the Israeli army has informed several countries in the region, and the US, that is preparing for a full-scale military operation in Gaza’s southernmost city. Top UN officials have sounded the alarm over a potential army assault on Rafah, citing the nearly two million displaced Palestinians sheltering there and Israel’s virtually indiscriminate bombing and shooting during past operations against Gaza’s other cities during the war.

Yesterday, a spokesperson for the US government said that it “would not” support an Israeli operation against Rafah without a clear strategy for civilian protection. Earlier, Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu ordered the army to prepare a plan to evacuate civilians there.

Jeremy Corbyn says Israel’s assault on Rafah will be act of ‘ethnic cleansing’

The British political figure has condemned what he calls the “complicity” of the British government in Israel’s ongoing war on Gaza “Palestinians risked life & limb to reach Rafah, the last designated safe zone in Gaza,” Corbyn said in a social media post. “Now they are being told to leave. Where are they supposed to go? This is not an “evacuation.” This is ethnic cleansing — and our government is complicit by letting Israel act with impunity.”

EU foreign policy chief expresses alarm over planned Israeli assault on Rafah

EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell Fontelles has said that reports of an anticipated Israeli assault on Rafah are “alarming”, as concern grows about high toll an Israeli incursion could take on civilians. “1.4 million Palestinians are currently in Rafah without safe place to go, facing starvation,” Borrell said in a social media post. “Reports of an Israeli military offensive on Rafah are alarming. It would have catastrophic consequences worsening the already dire humanitarian situation and the unbearable civilian toll.”

Amnesty International director says Palestinians in Gaza at ‘grave risk’ of genocide

Amnesty International’s Secretary-General Agnes Callamard has said that Palestinians in Gaza must be protected against potential acts of genocide as Israel prepares for an assault on Rafah, which is packed full with more than one million displaced people. “Evacuation?? BUT WHERE? There is nowhere to go to,” Callamard said in a social media post.

“Amnesty is reiterating that Palestinians in Gaza are at grave risk of genocide. The international community has an obligation to act to prevent genocide.”

PA President Abbas says Israel planning to force Palestinians out of Gaza with Rafah plan

President Mahmoud Abbas’s office has just released a statement calling Netanyahu’s comments on a planned assault on Rafah a “real threat” and part of an Israeli plan to forcibly remove Palestinians from their land. The statement added that the Israeli and US governments would be held fully responsible for the consequences of such a move, and called for the UN Security Council to act.

“It is now time for everyone to take responsibility in confronting the creation of another Nakba, which will push the whole region into endless wars,” the statement said.

Israeli military admits it killed captive in air strike, confirming Hamas claim

Israeli media outlets are reporting that the army has informed the family of Yossi Sharabi that their loved one, who was held captive in Gaza by Hamas, was killed by the military. Nearly one month ago, Hamas’s Qassam Brigades released a video showing Sharabi, along with two other captives, saying that he had been killed by Israeli bombs.

Israeli and Palestinian protest for ceasefire attacked by police, soldiers

“Palestinians and Israelis protesting for a ceasefire in the West Bank this morning were attacked by Israeli soldiers and police, who made arrests and confiscated banners,” Israeli journalist Haggai Matar said in a social media post. Videos of the event show Israeli forces putting a protester in a chokehold and ripping away posters.

Palestinian ambulance crew ‘detained’ while trying to help victims of Israeli West Bank shooting

Ahmed Jibril, the head of the Palestinian Red Crescent Society’s emergency and ambulance department, said that a two-man ambulance crew were in Beita trying to remove the wounded when they were detained, and then used as “human shields”. Jibril added that PRCS teams had repeatedly tried to save the life of Muath Ashraf Faleh, but had failed. He said that three others had been injured, one after being shot, and another after falling from a height while running away from Israeli forces.

The acting governor of Nablus, Ghassan Daghlas, told Al Jazeera that the raid in Beita was continuing. “The killings have been continuous for two years around Nablus and there are more than seven checkpoints around the city,” Daghlas said. “The closures increase day after day, and have caused an economic paralysis.”
