Forums - Politics Discussion - Israel-Hamas war, Gaza genocide

Since the site has been down all day, I'll stick to a recap and some 'high' lights. Basically the same downward progression as every day.

A recap of recent developments

It is Sunday, June 2 in the occupied Palestinian territory and Israel.

    • Israeli forces continued to pound north and central Gaza as the WHO announced the closure of southern Rafah city’s last functioning hospital, the al-Helal al-Emirati Hospital. The global health agency said that “there are almost no health services available in Rafah”.
    • Thousands of Israelis have again taken to the streets, calling on Prime Minister Netanyahu to strike a deal with Hamas that will see the release of captives held in Gaza.
    • Qatar, Egypt and the United States urged Israel and Hamas to conclude an agreement that embodies the principles outlined by US President Joe Biden, but far-right ministers in the ruling Israeli coalition threatened to dissolve Netanyahu’s government if he accepts such a deal.
    • Yemen’s Houthis said they conducted six operations on Saturday, targeting a US aircraft carrier, a destroyer and three vessels in the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean.
    • Chile says it will back South Africa’s genocide case against Israel in the International Court of Justice (ICJ).

That 'Israeli deal' proposed by Biden isn't sitting well with the war cabinet

Israel’s far-right ministers threaten toppling government over ceasefire deal

Israel’s far-right ministers Itamar Ben-Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich have told Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu they will leave his coalition and topple the government if he accepts Biden’s ceasefire proposal, according to Axios’s political reporter, Barak Ravid.

“We will not allow the end of the war without the complete elimination of Hamas. If the prime minister implements the promiscuous deal under the conditions published today, which mean the end of the war and the renouncing of Hamas, Otzma Yehudit will dissolve the government,” Ben-Gvir said in a post on X, referring to his party.

So that means no ceasefire deal ever. First they can't eliminate Hamas, and even if they could, there would be no Hamas left to make a deal with... The intention is clearly the indefinite (re)occupation of Gaza and turning it into another West Bank Israel can raid daily at will.

The government will have to fall first before any deal gets made

Lapid slams threats by Ben Gvir, Smotrich over new truce deal

Israeli opposition leader Yair Lapid has denounced far-right ministers Itamar Ben Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich for threatening to dissolve Netanyahu’s government if he were to accept Biden’s new ceasefire deal.

Lapid said the threats “abandon national security, the hostages and the residents of the north and south”, according to the Times of Israel.

“This is the worst and most wanton government in the country’s history,” Lapid was quoted as saying. “As far as they’re concerned, there could be war here forever.”

And Gantz will gladly take over

Gantz calls for Israeli war cabinet to meet over new truce deal

Benny Gantz, a member of Israel’s war cabinet, has called for a meeting as soon as possible to discuss Biden’s new ceasefire proposal, according to the Times of Israel.

“The United States has proven over time consistently, exactly like it has since the war’s beginning under the leadership of President Biden, its commitment to Israel’s security and the efforts to return the hostages. We are deeply grateful to the president and all our American friends for their support,” Gantz was quoted as saying.

He stressed that Israel is “committed to continue advancing an arrangement to return the hostages” and that the war cabinet “must be convened as soon as possible together with the negotiating team to formulate the next steps”.

It's Biden's last straw rather than Israel having changed its mind.

Sorry Biden, you'll actually have to do something rather than saying you'll do something.

Biden needs a pause in Gaza as election season approaches

The joint statement by the US, Egypt and Qatar once again emphasises that this is an ongoing process. There has been a lot of confusion over the past 24 hours about how on earth it is possible that after Biden says this is an Israeli deal that’s on the table, that Benjamin Netanyahu can then make various comments that seem to say he does not really agree with what the US president said in his speech.

And I think that’s understandable because none of us have actually seen what this four-and-a-half page document actually is.

So a lot of today has been about trying to understand what has Netanyahu agreed to, what is the Israeli deal and how does it work?

What the Biden administration says has happened is that Netanyahu has agreed to the parameters of this three-phase deal. The first part of that deal is a six-week ceasefire with some sort of captive exchange, humanitarian relief and limited withdrawal of Israeli forces. But then all these other issues – such as the future of Hamas – they are all still to be negotiated in phase two. So, therefore, it can still be described as an Israeli deal that Netanyahu has signed off on.

There are differences between Biden and Netanyahu, which in itself is quite notable. Apparently, Biden has evolved on this issue, while Netanyahu is still using the same kind of eradication [of Hamas] language that he was talking about before.

But for Biden, what he wants is that six-week ceasefire, which then can be rolled over as negotiations continue about the other phases. Because you know, we heard this last year. A Biden administration official was quoted as saying that Israel can do pretty much what it wants until the heat of the election season.

And now that election season is approaching, the conventions are going to begin in a few weeks’ time, and Biden needs that pause, some kind of pause, a six-week pause. This isn’t about a permanent ceasefire yet. This is about a six-week ceasefire that can potentially roll over so that Biden can begin to rehabilitate himself with his base during the election season.

And the deal for Netanyahu is that by presenting this as an Israeli deal, he can start, perhaps, to rehabilitate himself as well as international law closes in.

Not surprising, but let everyone 'pressure' Hamas to accept the deal. I guess only Biden knows what's actually in the 'Israeli' proposal.

Hamas yet to receive Biden’s ceasefire proposal

Hamas spokesperson Osama Hamdan welcomed Biden’s proposal as “positive”, but said the group is yet to receive any written documents.

“We have not received anything written, and based on our experience what is verbally said is not what is usually documented. That is why we are ready to study any documents with all the details. However what is being broadcast in the media reflects positivity,” he told Al Jazeera.

“We can see that people are conscious that the continuous war and the killing of our people will not make us lose our steadfastness. So there are a lot of positive elements. However we need to see it documented on a piece of paper that should be sent to us.”

Mass protests against Netanyahu government again fill streets of Tel Aviv

Thousands of Israelis have again taken to the streets of the Israeli city, putting pressure on the government of Prime Minister Netanyahu to strike a deal with Hamas that will see the release of Israeli captives held in Gaza.

These protests have been occurring every weekend for months, with demonstrators also calling for early elections to replace Netanyahu.

Today, a large banner was carried by some members of the crowd, pleading with US President Joe Biden to “save” the captives from Netanyahu by exerting pressure on him to accept a ceasefire deal.

Chile backs South Africa case against Israel at ICJ

Chile will join South Africa’s case against Israel in the International Court of Justice (ICJ), Chilean President Gabriel Boric announced during his presidential address.

“I have the obligation to talk about the critical situation in Gaza. We will never stop feeling outraged over the indiscriminate and disproportionate actions against innocent civilians – especially Palestinian women and children – carried out by the Israeli army,” Boric said.

“These acts demand a firm and permanent response from the international community. Besides the humanitarian aid we’ve provided Palestine, recalling our ambassador to Israel for consultations, and along with Mexico submitting a referral of the situation in Palestine to the International Criminal Court, I have decided that Chile will back the case presented by South Africa to the International Court of Justice in the Hague, within the framework of the UN Genocide Convention,” he added.

‘Almost no health services available in Rafah’: WHO

Rafah’s last functioning hospital, the al-Helal al-Emirati Hospital, has gone out of service after being evacuated on May 30, according to the World Health Organization (WHO) office in the occupied Palestinian territory.

The two other main hospitals in Rafah, al-Najjar and Kuwait Specialty Hospital, stopped functioning on May 7 and May 28, respectively, the organisation said.

“There are almost no health services available in Rafah city. Only one field hospital remains partially functional, but it is currently inaccessible due to hostilities in the vicinity and can only provide basic services to patients inside.

Two field hospitals are functional in Rafah’s coastal area (al-Mawasi) but they are extremely overwhelmed given the scale of needs,” WHO said in a post on X.

The organisation urged for a ceasefire to restore hospitals there.

“With hostilities escalating due to the ongoing military operation, the lack of health care will lead to increased unnecessary deaths and suffering.”

UNWRA no longer operating in Rafah

The Commissioner-General of UNRWA, Philippe Lazzarini, posted on X about the situation in Gaza over the course of the month of May.

  • More than 1 million people – most displaced several times – were forced to flee.
  • All 36 UNRWA shelters in Rafah are now empty.
  • UNRWA has had to stop health and other critical services in Rafah.
  • The agency is now working from Khan Younis and central areas of Gaza where 1.7 million people are living.
  • UNRWA was allowed to pick up just under 450 trucks in the past three weeks in support of the humanitarian operation.
  • “This is nothing in the face of the needs: at least 600 trucks/day of commercial, fuel & humanitarian supplies. Fuel is running short: our teams are standing by to pick it up when the Israeli Authorities give the green light,” Lazzarini said.
  • “All eyes are on the proposal to reach an end to this war through a ceasefire, the release of all hostages + substantial & safe flow of urgently needed supplies into Gaza,” he added.

Imagine being parachuted all the way from Brooklyn, become a citizen of Israel because some religion makes you eligible, and then start stealing lands with the IDF protection, because again, some religion made these vile acts a demonstration of heroism? Messed up.

Indeed and this has been happening for decades, getting worse all the time

The frequency has gone up greatly since Oct 7, as of Februari 5th:

UN humanitarian office reports at least 800 Israeli settler attacks since Oct. 7

https://www.aa.com.tr/en/middle-east/un-humanitarian-office-reports-at-least-800-israeli-settler-attacks-since-oct-7/3207477

Attacks include killing of more than 30 Palestinians by Israeli forces, settlers, injury to nearly 500 others, according to OCHA

And then when you dare to say something or god forbid resist, next thing your town gets raided, people get shot.

Palestinian teen shot by Israeli forces dies of wounds

Israeli forces have shot and killed a 15-year-old Palestinian boy during a raid in the Aqbat Jabr refugee camp in the occupied West Bank, according to the Wafa news agency.

The soldiers shot at Ahmed Ashraf Hmedat near a cemetery in the camp, located south of Jericho, and prevented emergency crews from reaching and treating him and another wounded person, the agency reported.

Hmedat sustained critical injuries and died of his wounds later, Wafa said.

Israeli forces took Hmedat’s body and handed it over to the Palestinian Red Crescent Society, but the second wounded person remains with them and his health condition remains unclear, the agency reported.

Israeli forces demolish Palestinian home near Bethlehem

Israeli forces have demolished a house in the village of al-Walaja, northwest of Bethlehem, the Wafa news agency is reporting. The village is carved into hillside terraces and olive farms between the Israeli-occupied West Bank and occupied East Jerusalem.

In 2022, the Israeli Supreme Court froze demolition orders for 38 houses in al-Walaja, but many of its 3,000 residents fear losing their homes amid rising Israeli demolitions in East Jerusalem since October 2023.

Israel’s raids on Jenin fuel Palestinian resistance

https://www.aljazeera.com/features/2024/6/2/israels-violent-raids-on-jenin-only-fuel-palestinian-resistance

Israel has intensified raids in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem since it launched its war on Gaza on October 7. At least 516 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli raids and shootings in the occupied West Bank in the past eight months, according to the Palestinian Health Ministry.

The Jenin refugee camp has been the site of numerous Israeli incursions over the years. And after October 7, things have become worse for the Palestinians. The renewed Israeli violence has only fuelled Palestinian resistance in Jenin.

Israeli forces arrest 6 family members near Ramallah

Israeli troops have stormed a family’s apartment in the town of Beitunia, 4km (2.5 miles) from Ramallah, and arrested six relatives, reports the Wafa news agency. Those detained include a woman and three of her brothers, all originally hailing from the Gaza Strip, according to Wafa.

In a separate raid in the town of ad-Dhahiriya, near Hebron, Israeli forces arrested two more brothers in their homes, according to Wafa.

Israel has arrested 8,985 Palestinians in West Bank since October 7

Israeli forces have arrested at least 10 people, including a minor and several former prisoners, in their latest round of raids throughout the occupied West Bank, reports the Palestinian Prisoner’s Society.

The arrests started last night in the governorates of Jenin, Hebron, Bethlehem and Nablus, according to the group.

In total, Israel has made 8,895 arrests in the West Bank since Gaza’s war broke out, apprehending many in their own homes and at military checkpoints.

Casualties as Israeli forces bomb Rafah, Gaza cities

The Wafa news agency is reporting that several people were killed and wounded after Israeli forces launched air and artillery attacks on the cities of Gaza and Rafah overnight.

The agency did not give an exact toll for the attacks.

It reported deaths and injuries from Israeli air raids on homes in Gaza City’s Daraj neighbourhood and Old City, as well as artillery shelling of areas near the University College in the Sabra neighbourhood.

In Rafah, it said several people were wounded and several homes destroyed when Israeli forces carried air raids on the city’s Brazil neighbourhood.

Woman, infant among 3 killed in Israeli attack on Gaza City

The Wafa news agency is now reporting that the bodies of three people were brought to al-Ahli Arab Hospital following an Israeli attack on an apartment belonging to the Nabi family in Gaza City’s Daraj neighbourhood.

Parents fear sick, injured children will die without evacuation

Doctors at Al-Aqsa Hospital in Deir el-Balah are helpless, unable to provide patients with essential medical care. They say the vast majority of cases need to be evacuated for treatment abroad … but patients are unable to leave Gaza.

I saw children suffering from high rates of malnutrition, combined with different kinds of diseases. It was completely disturbing. This is due to the severe shortage of food supplies and deteriorating medical conditions.

Parents of sick and injured children express deep agony, saying they are helpless, that they can’t do anything for their kids. They are afraid they will lose their children as the situation worsens by the day.

Rescuers struggle to reach injured Palestinians in embattled Rafah neighbourhoods

We woke up today to the sound of heavy artillery bombardment in the northern part of Nuseirat refugee camp and the northern part of Bureij refugee camp.

The majority of the Israeli military operations are now concentrated on Rafah district, where there has been no letup in fighting. The military has been demolishing complete residential neighbourhoods and thrusting troops and tanks deeper into the Shaboura and Yibna neighbourhoods and close to the Tal as-Sultan neighbourhood.

Ambulances are struggling to rescue Palestinians who are injured in areas of confrontations. The vast majority of Rafah’s medical sector is out of service and they depend on field hospitals in the al-Mawasi area, which is a long distance away.

Ambulance found destroyed in Jabalia

The Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS) says it has found a second ambulance destroyed in northern Gaza’s Jabalia camp, after Israeli forces partially withdrew from the territory on Thursday.

Rescuers with PRCS attempting to reach killed and injured Palestinians have regularly faced threats and attacks from Israeli forces. Since October 7, the organisation says it has lost 30 of its staff members, including 17 killed while on the job.

Nearly 36,440 Palestinians killed in Israeli attacks since October 7: Health Ministry

Israel’s military offensive in the Gaza Strip has killed at least 36,439 Palestinians and wounded 82,627 since October 7, the Palestinian enclave’s Health Ministry said. There have been 60 Palestinians killed and 220 injured in the past 24 hours, the ministry statement added.

Palestinian rescuers recover 50 more bodies from Jabalia

Ambulances and civil defence crews have found 50 more bodies in northern Gaza’s Jabalia, bringing the total number uncovered there in recent days to 120, reports the Wafa news agency.

The rescuers are continuing to search for dozens of people who are missing in the area, which Israeli forces partially withdrew from on Thursday after a deadly 20-day operation.

As we’ve been reporting, Jabalia residents have returned to their hometown to find their homes and neighbourhoods wrecked, with many of their loved ones missing.

Chicago students walk out after university withholds diplomas from pro-Palestinian protesters

Students have walked out of a University of Chicago graduation ceremony in protest against the war in Gaza, after the university withheld diplomas from four graduating students who participated in a pro-Palestinian encampment.

“My diploma doesn’t matter when there are people in Palestine and in Gaza that will never walk a stage again, who will never receive a diploma. What about them? Who’s going to fight for them?” Youssef Haweh, one of the four students affected, said in a statement on Saturday.

October 7 survivors are suing pro-Palestinian groups. But what is the aim?

https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2024/5/31/october-7-survivors-are-suing-pro-palestinian-groups-but-what-is-the-aim

Nine survivors of the October 7 attacks on southern Israel have filed a civil suit against pro-Palestinian groups in the United States, alleging their advocacy work on college campuses constitutes “material support” for “terrorism”.

But the defendants have pushed back, warning that the case is part of a pattern of legal attacks meant to put pro-Palestinian groups on the defensive and curtail free speech at US universities.

“It is absolutely a threat to free speech and it’s a threat to free speech on any front, on any issue, not just on Palestine,” said Christina Jump, a lawyer for American Muslims for Palestine (AMP), one of the two defendants in the case.

Pro-Palestine book faces censorship calls in South Africa

The South African Jewish Board of Deputies has called for a ban on a book on Palestinian history, saying it is an attempt to “indoctrinate” children.

The book, From the River to the Sea, highlights the history of Palestine, including its multiethnic background and the 1948 Nakba, and celebrates key Palestinian figures and culture. Its writer and publisher, Nathi Ngubane, says he has been bombarded with hate messages over the book, despite simply telling “the story of Palestine and their fight for freedom”.

The South African Jews for a Free Palestine (SAJFP) backed up the book, saying it is an important resource for understanding Palestinian history amid the “ongoing genocide”, and denounced calls for it to be censored.

“It is imperative that parents and educators have tools like this well-researched and expertly produced publication to counter the persistent erasure and silencing of Palestinian voices in public discourse,” the group said.

The 'Biden proposal' makes clear who all the war mongers / one sided idiots are. Your buddy Netanyahu needs to be urged.

David Cameron again urges Hamas to accept ceasefire deal

The foreign secretary of the United Kingdom has released a video statement, again urging Hamas to accept the ceasefire proposal put forth by the US president.

“Israel, backed by President Biden has now made a new offer to Hamas to get the hostages released. I think this is an important moment and one that we should seize in order to bring this conflict to an end. Not just now, but permanently,” Cameron said.

“It’s clear that Gaza cannot be ruled by Hamas and that Israel needs guarantees about its security. But it’s also clear that we need to support the Palestinian Authority and set out the parameters for what a Palestinian state would look like,” he added.

The comments came as Hamas welcomed Biden’s proposal, but mixed messages emerged from Israel, with Netanyahu saying there would be no permanent ceasefire without the “destruction” of the Palestinian armed group.

Iran summons Swedish envoy over ‘baseless accusations’

Iran has summoned Sweden’s temporary charge d’affaires after a Swedish official made “baseless and spiteful accusations”, Iran’s Foreign Ministry has said, in a post on X.

The Swedish Security Service said on Thursday that Iran had “targeted representatives of other states, including Israel… with a view to harming Israeli and Jewish interests, targets, and activities in Sweden”, accusations that Iran’s embassy in Stockholm has already denied.

Resistance in the US against a permanent ceasefire

US senator wants to know what Biden’s plan means for Israel’s offensive against Hamas

Lindsey Graham, a South Carolina Republican, has called on Biden to clarify if his ceasefire deal for Gaza would allow the Israeli military to continue its operations against Hamas.

The “enduring defeat” of the Palestinian armed group “is not only in the region’s interests, it is in America’s interests”, Graham said in a post on X.

“President Biden needs to be crystal clear that this ceasefire proposal does not prevent Israel from continuing military operations to destroy Hamas and to ensure they have no role in the future,” he said.

Military operations will never defeat resistance to occupation and military raids. It's not just Hamas.

With Al-Qassam and Al-Quds Brigades, four other armed Palestinian factions are fighting Israel in Gaza

https://www.newarab.com/news/four-other-armed-palestinian-groups-fighting-israel-gaza

To support Hamas and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) and despite any ideological or political differences, thousands of fighters from four other Palestinian factions have been fighting against the Israeli occupation forces in Gaza since last October.

As well as al-Qassam Brigades — the armed wing of Hamas — and al-Quds Brigades — the armed wing of the PIJ and second-strongest armed faction in Gaza — these other armed factions fighters are actively participating in attacks on invading Israeli ground troops, launching rockets at the Israeli towns and even holding some of the Israelis that were captured last October, according to a senior Palestinian official, who preferred to remain anonymous.

Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades Despite being the main political rival to Hamas, fighters in Fatah's al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades in Gaza have joined "to confront the Israeli occupation forces in the Gaza Strip and carry out qualitative military operations in support of both Hamas and Islamic Jihad fighters", noted senior Palestinian officials.

Al-Nasser Salah al-Din Brigades Al-Nasser Salah al-Din Brigades is the armed wing of the Popular Resistance Committees. This Islamic-oriented group believes that only armed struggle is capable of liberating Palestine and preventing Israel from succeeding in its colonial ambitions in the Palestinian territories.

Abu Ali Mustafa Brigades Abu Ali Mustafa Brigades, the military wing of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), was formed as part of the Popular Resistance Forces in 2000. It was named after the party's former Secretary-General, Abu Ali Mustafa, whom Israel assassinated in 2001.

The Palestinian National Resistance Brigades The Palestinian National Resistance Brigades is the military wing of the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine (DFLP). Like others, it was formed during the Second Intifada in 2000 and has an armed presence in Gaza, the occupied West Bank and Jerusalem and has been able to carry out repeated raids on illegal Israeli settlements and outposts in the occupied West Bank and Gaza.

"Although the Al-Qassam Brigades and the Al-Quds Brigades are the strongest on the ground, fighters from other factions joining the fight has created a balance not only on the field but also politically, especially since Israel has always bragged since the beginning of its war that it is only fighting Hamas, which it described as similar to ISIS, to justify its crimes against all the Palestinian people," Wasef Erekat, a Ramallah-based Palestinian military expert, told TNA.

Only more resistance will spring up with no shortage of people, who lost everything already, to recruit. The only way to 'defeat' the resistance is take away the reason for the resistance and give people a better alternative.

The longer Israel stalls for a ceasefire, the more groups will join in, arising from local warlords for example. It will only get more difficult to get a general ceasefire, yet that's exactly what the war cabinet wants... International peacekeeping forces are needed. Indonesia is on the right track.

Top Netanyahu advisor: ‘A lot of details to be worked out’ in ceasefire deal

Ophir Falk, a foreign policy adviser to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, has spoken to the British Sunday Times about the latest ceasefire plan outlined by US President Joe Biden.

Falk said, “It’s not a good deal but we dearly want the hostages released, all of them.” He also emphasised that reaching a permanent ceasefire – called for in the deal’s second phase – should be conditional.

“There are a lot of details to be worked out and that includes there will not be a permanent ceasefire until all our objectives are met,” said Falk.

Your objectives (destruction of Hamas) can't be met, so no deal then...

Here come the twisting of words / 'the deal'. Nothing about a ceasefire.

Israeli president gives ‘full support’ to captive-prisoner exchange deal

In a post on X, Israeli President Isaac Herzog has extended thanks to US President Biden, who on Friday outlined a new Gaza ceasefire and captive-prisoner exchange proposal.

Herzog pledged he would fully back the government in striking a deal to release the captives, a task he said is Israel’s “inherent obligation”.

Israeli peace activist urges end to Gaza war

Israeli activist Maoz Inon, who lost both his parents in Hamas’s October 7 attack, has said it is time to “break the cycle of revenge” and for Israel to find a “diplomatic solution” to end the war.

“While our government cares about Jewish supremacy, we care about security and safety,” he tells Al Jazeera. “The only way to reach security and safety is a diplomatic solution and to sign a peace accord between nations”.
