Israel to designate Egypt border area closed military zone

Defense Minister Israel Katz has ordered the military to designate an Israel-Egypt border area a restricted military zone and permit Israeli forces “to strike any unauthorised party” that enters.

The move is needed to crack down on drones smuggling weapons in the area, according to a statement from his office. The Times of Israel reported the military has yet to announce any new area under military closure along the 200km (124-mile) border.

Critics have accused Israel of seizing territory in Gaza as “buffer zones” where military installations are being established.

Israel’s Ben-Gvir lauds ‘military zone’ designation on Egyptian border

Israel’s far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir has praised the military’s move to designate the Egyptian border area a closed military zone, citing arms smuggling concerns.

“I commend my friend, Defence Minister Israel Katz, for the important decision to declare the Egyptian border a closed military zone – out of an understanding that the smuggling taking place there serves terrorist purposes,” said Ben-Gvir in a post on X.

“Minister Katz represents a determined security approach, one that breaks free from outdated conceptions and looks at reality with clear eyes.”

The policy change follows a move by military chief of staff Eyal Zamir to create a special unit to curb alleged weapons-smuggling drones from Egypt.

In a statement, Katz warned Israel’s rules of engagement near the border “will be changed accordingly”, and “anyone who breaches the forbidden area will be struck.”

Israeli MP demands police drop inquiry into Sde Teiman detention centre

Israeli lawmaker Zvi Sukkot is demanding police drop an investigation into his role in the storming of the Sde Teiman detention centre last year by protesters.

The incident occurred after Israeli soldiers were arrested following the leak of a video showing the rape of a Palestinian detainee.

According to Israel’s Channel 12, Sukkot’s lawyer has cited “corruption” at Sde Teiman in requesting the police cancel his questioning. The letter references the subsequent arrest of the Israeli army’s chief prosecutor, Yifat Tomer-Yerushalmi, who admitted to leaking the video before resigning.

Hezbollah insists it has ‘legitimate right’ to resist Israel

Lebanon’s Hezbollah says it has “a legitimate right to resist [Israeli] occupation”.

While Lebanon is bound by a ceasefire, it is not obligated to be drawn into political negotiations with Israel, the group said in a statement. “We affirm our legitimate right to resist occupation and aggression and to stand by our army and our people to protect the sovereignty of our country,” it said.

Last week, Lebanese President Joseph Aoun instructed the army to confront any Israeli incursion into southern Lebanon after Israeli forces crossed the border and killed a municipal employee despite a US-brokered ceasefire.

Lebanon’s government is pushing to disarm the group, a move rejected by Hezbollah. Israel, which still has soldiers stationed in five areas in southern Lebanon, has threatened to intensify attacks on Hezbollah if the Lebanese government does not succeed in disarming it.

“The issue of the exclusivity of arms is not to be discussed in response to foreign demands or Israeli blackmail, it must be addressed nationally through consensus on a comprehensive strategy for security, defence and the protection of national sovereignty,” Hezbollah said.

It also said it’s exercising its right to defend itself against “an enemy that imposes war on our country, does not stop its attacks, and seeks to subjugate our state”.

Israel’s military claims new attack on Hezbollah members in Lebanon’s Tyre area

Israel’s military says it has carried out an air raid in southern Lebanon’s Tyre area, targeting members of Hezbollah’s construction unit, which it accuses of trying to rebuild military infrastructure.

Israeli forces will “continue to operate in order to remove any threat to the territory of the state of Israel”, said the army in a statement.

The announcement comes shortly after Lebanon’s National News Agency reported an Israeli air raid near the southern towns of Toura and Aabbasiyyeh, both in the Tyre district. It did not list any casualties from the attack.

Israel issues urgent attack warning for southern Lebanon

Israel’s military has threatened a major attack on southern Lebanon and told residents to stay away from Hezbollah “terrorist infrastructure”.

“Urgent warning to residents of southern Lebanon. In the near future, the [army] will attack Hezbollah terrorist infrastructure throughout southern Lebanon to counter Hezbollah’s prohibited attempts to rebuild its activities in the area,” military spokesperson Avichay Adraee said in a statement.

Israel continues its near-daily attacks on Lebanon despite signing a November 2024 ceasefire with Hezbollah. Earlier, the armed group said it has a legitimate right to respond to Israel’s bombardment and occupation of Lebanese territory.

Israeli army launches ‘wave of strikes’ in southern Lebanon

In a post on X, the Israeli army says it has begun “a wave of strikes” targeting Hezbollah military sites in southern Lebanon.

It follows an earlier attack today in southern Lebanon’s Tyre area that the military claimed targeted a Hezbollah construction unit.

Israeli attacks hit several areas of southern Lebanon

Lebanon’s National News Agency reports attacks in several areas of the country’s south as Israel announced a “wave of strikes” in the area. One attack hit a building in southern Lebanon’s Tyre, while another occurred in the southern town of Taybeh, according to the agency.

It also reported an Israeli warplane flying at a low altitude over Beirut’s southern suburbs.

Israeli military carries out attack in southern Lebanon’s Aita al-Jabal

Lebanon’s National News Agency reports another Israeli attack in southern Lebanon, this one occurring in the town of Aita al-Jabal. It did not mention any casualties.

Earlier, Israel’s military threatened to target a building in Aita al-Jabal that it said had been utilised by Hezbollah.

Israeli army issues more warnings for residents in south Lebanon

The Israeli military’s Arabic-language spokesman, Avichay Adraee, has warned of another imminent attack in southern Lebanon – this one targeting a building in Zawtar al-Sharqiyah town.

In a post on X, Adraee called on Zawtar al-Sharqiyah residents who live in or near the buildings marked on a map he shared to immediately evacuate and stay at least 500 metres away.

No ground offensive on horizon, but Israeli attacks in Lebanon an escalation

It doesn’t seem that an Israeli ground offensive in Lebanon is in the immediate future. But these latest strikes are being presented as an escalation.

According to the Israeli statements, we heard from the prime minister saying, “Look, I told you, at the beginning of this war, Israel is going to change the face of the Middle East, and you didn’t believe me, but we are changing the face of the Middle East, and the American president shares my vision.”

And if you take a look around, you see Israel using fire, using air strikes, shaking the ground from under people across the region: in Lebanon, in Gaza, in Yemen.

Israel has a free hand, and it doesn’t feel restrained even by the US oversight mechanism.

In Lebanon, in particular, it is going to discuss what it views as Hezbollah rearming and regrouping. It has made it very clear that unless Hezbollah disarms, unless the Lebanese government strips the party of its arms, then it will move in and do it itself.

One killed, 9 wounded in Israeli air raids on southern Lebanon

A Lebanese man has been killed and eight others wounded in Toura, a town in southern Lebanon’s Tyre district, where Israeli warplanes struck residential areas, according to the National News Agency (NNA).

Another man was wounded in Israeli attacks on Tayr Debba, also in Tyre, according to NNA.

The towns of Taybeh and Aita al-Jabal were also struck.

As we’ve been reporting, Israel earlier announced a “wave of strikes” across southern Lebanon, claiming it was targeting Hezbollah sites despite a ceasefire agreed with the group last November.

UNIFIL says ramped up Israeli attacks on Lebanon ‘threaten civilians’

The UN peacekeeping force in Lebanon has called on Israel to immediately stop its attacks in the area after today’s intensified assault on several southern towns.

UNIFIL said in a statement that the bombardment violates UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which ended the 2006 war between Hezbollah and Israel and tasked the peacekeepers with serving as an observation force in the area.

“They come as the Lebanese Armed Forces are undertaking operations to control unauthorized weapons and infrastructure in the south Litani area,” UNIFIL said of Israel’s strikes.

“Any military action, especially on such a destructive scale, threatens the safety of civilians and undermines the progress being made toward a political and diplomatic solution.”

It also called on Lebanese actors “to refrain from any response that could inflame the situation further”.

Lebanese president condemns Israeli attacks on country’s south

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun has denounced today’s wave of Israeli air strikes as a “heinous political crime”.

“What Israel committed today in southern Lebanon constitutes a full-fledged crime under international humanitarian law, which criminalizes the targeting, terrorising, and forced displacement of civilians,” Aoun said in a statement.

“Nearly a year has passed since the ceasefire took effect, and during that period Israel has spared no effort in showing its rejection of any negotiated settlement between the two countries,” Aoun added.

The Lebanese army also condemned the Israeli attacks as “a continuation of the enemy’s destructive approach aimed at undermining Lebanon’s stability, expanding devastation in the south, and prolonging the war to maintain the threat against the Lebanese people”.

Tensions have been mounting in southern Lebanon for weeks, with the Israeli army intensifying near-daily air raids despite its November 2024 ceasefire with Hezbollah.

The Israeli army has killed more than 4,000 people and injured nearly 17,000 in its attacks on Lebanon, which began in October 2023 and turned into a full-scale offensive in September 2024.

‘Anxiety’ surrounds Syrian president’s upcoming visit to Lebanon

We have more from former US diplomat Nabeel Khoury, who has been speaking to Al Jazeera as Israel continues to attack both Gaza and Lebanon despite ceasefires in place.

Khoury said Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa upcoming visit to neighbouring Lebanon “is being looked at with a lot of anxiety” amid the attacks.

The issue has been widely debated in the media and political circles, especially in Lebanon, Khoury noted, with some of the rhetoric echoing claims by right-wing Israeli ministers suggesting possible Israeli-Syrian collaboration against Hezbollah in Lebanon.

He added that al-Sharaa has been “cozying up” to Israel, with discussions under way about possible normalisation.

“This cannot be good news for Lebanon,” Khoury said, explaining that it puts a lot of pressure – particularly from US President Trump’s administration – for Lebanon to follow suit.

“I see the visit, and the Israeli bombings, as more warnings,” he said.

UN Security Council lifts sanctions on Syria’s president

The council has voted to remove sanctions on Ahmed al-Sharaa, the Syrian president who is due to meet Trump at the White House on Monday.

The US-drafted resolution, which also lifted sanctions on Syrian Interior Minister Anas Khattab, received 14 votes in favour. China abstained.

“The US really wanted to push this through before al-Sharaa visits Washington next week,” Al Jazeera’s Gabriel Elizondo reported from UN headquarters in New York.

Al-Sharaa previously headed Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, an armed opposition group that led the uprising that ousted Syria’s longtime leader Bashar al-Assad in December of last year.

Formerly known as the Nusra Front, HTS was al-Qaeda’s official wing in Syria until breaking ties in 2016. The group had been on a UN sanctions list since May 2014.

Sde Teiman leak shows Israeli prisons are ‘torture camps’: B’Tselem

Israel’s prison system is a “network of torture camps for Palestinians”, says Israeli human rights organisation B’Tselem, amid upheaval over leaked footage showing Israeli soldiers raping a Palestinian detainee at the notorious Sde Teiman facility last year.

“The documented violence at Sde Teiman, and other incidents exposed by investigative journalists and human rights groups, reflect a broader reality: Israeli prison facilities have been turned into torture camps for Palestinians since 7 October 2023,” B’Tselem said.

In a social media post, the rights group noted that it had reviewed testimonies from 55 Palestinian men and women held in Israeli prisons and detention facilities after Israel’s war on Gaza began and were later released.

“Their testimonies reveal an institutional policy of abuse: deliberate humiliation, severe violence, starvation, sleep deprivation, and denial of medical care and religious practice,” it said, adding that at least 80 Palestinian prisoners have died in Israeli custody in the last two years.

Kazakhstan confirms it will join US-brokered Abraham Accords

The Central Asian country’s government has released a short statement, saying that its “anticipated accession to the Abraham Accords represents a natural and logical continuation of Kazakhstan’s foreign policy course”.

That policy is “grounded in dialogue, mutual respect, and regional stability”, the statement said.

As we’ve been reporting, the Trump administration has been pushing to get more countries to agree to join the Abraham Accords – a series of deals that saw Arab and Muslim-majority states agree to normalise relations with Israel.

Kazakhstan has had diplomatic ties with Israel for decades.

Some quick facts:

The U.S. and Kazakhstan are cooperating to develop the country's tungsten deposits, with a U.S. company receiving financing to develop the resources, which are critical for U.S. defense needs. Kazakhstan is the world's leading producer of uranium and is involved in nuclear non-proliferation efforts.

Kazakhstan is exploring Israeli technology to improve its agricultural sector, focusing on irrigation, water conservation, and other innovative agricultural practices. The countries established diplomatic relations on April 10, 1992. The embassy of Israel in Astana, Kazakhstan opened in August 1992. The embassy of Kazakhstan in Tel Aviv, Israel opened in May 1996.

Kazakhstan recognized the State of Palestine in 1992, establishing diplomatic relations and exchanging ambassadors. The two countries have an embassy in Astana and are represented by Kazakhstan's embassy in Amman, Jordan. Both countries are members of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation. Palestine's Foreign Minister has visited Kazakhstan, and academic and commercial cooperation agreements have been signed between the two nations.

SOAS University ‘concerned’ by reports of Sami Hamdi’s detention in US

The London university where British political commentator and journalist Sami Hamdi completed his studies has called for “full transparency and due process” regarding his detention in the US.

SOAS University of London said in a statement it was “deeply concerned” by reports of Hamdi’s detention, adding that “there is no indication that Mr Hamdi has violated any laws”.

“We urge the US authorities to ensure full transparency and due process in Mr Hamdi’s case, and to uphold his fundamental right to freedom of expression and movement.”

Hamdi, 35, was stopped at San Francisco international airport in California on October 26 and detained by agents from the Department of Homeland Security’s Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) condemned Hamdi’s detention as “a blatant affront to free speech”, attributing his arrest to his criticism of Israel’s war on Gaza.

Six people arrested at Maccabi Tel Aviv-Aston Villa football match

Police in the UK say six people have been arrested at the match between Aston Villa and Israeli club Maccabi Tel Aviv in Birmingham tonight.

West Midlands Police said three of those were arrested for “racially aggravated public offences” and another was detained for breach of the peace.

Police had deployed hundreds of officers ahead of the UEFA Europa League match three weeks after Aston Villa barred travelling Israeli club supporters from attending due to threats of violence.

Around 200 pro-Palestinian demonstrators waved flags outside the stadium while about 40 people also turned up for a smaller pro-Israel counter-protest.

A campaign to ban Israeli teams from European and global football has gained momentum amid the country’s war on Gaza, with rights advocates stressing that more than 400 Palestinian footballers have been killed in Israeli attacks over the past two years.

Still let the war criminals play their game... But at least they had a 3:1 ratio of police to protestors lol.

Six arrests were made amid a huge police operation, with more than 700 officers deployed for the Europa League match.

Katz setting the next unattainable goal

Israel’s defence chief orders military to destroy all Hamas tunnels

Defence Minister Israel Katz says he instructed the military to “destroy and annihilate” all tunnels used by Hamas in Gaza, saying this will lead to the group’s downfall.

“If there are no tunnels, there is no Hamas,” said Katz in a post on X.

Hamas is a resistance movement with or without tunnels. There's no way to stop people from digging or to verify there are no tunnels unless you plan on paving the entire Gaza strip in 10 ft concrete...

This is nothing but an excuse to sell to the western media to keep the occupation going indefinitely.

The other delusional clown

Trump: International stabilisation force to be in Gaza ‘very soon’

The multinational force – likely to include troops from Egypt, Qatar, Turkiye, and the UAE – is part of Trump’s post-war governance plan for Gaza.

“It’s going to be very soon, and Gaza is working out very well,” Trump said at a White House function with Central Asian leaders. “You haven’t been hearing too much about problems, and I’ll tell you, we’ve had countries that have volunteered if there’s a problem with Hamas.”

The force is supposed to train and support vetted Palestinian police in the Gaza Strip, with backing from Egypt and Jordan. “Peace in Gaza is strong, and if Hamas doesn’t play its part, it will reap the consequences of its actions,” warned Trump.

If you follow mainstream news... Problems in Gaza are unchanged, Israel has excluded Turkey from participating, Egypt is a corrupt dictatorship playing along with the US and Israel, UAE the same and has been / is supporting RSF's genocide in Sudan. Qatar also caved in to US/Israeli pressure, bombed by Israel with impunity.

And new problems

Hamas now battling Israeli-backed militias for Gaza territory

Since the ceasefire began in early October, Israeli forces have conducted about 190 attacks across Gaza, killing more than 240 Palestinians. The vast majority of this violence occurred close to the “yellow line” ceasefire demarcation.

In parallel, intra-Palestinian violence has increased to its highest levels since the war began in 2023.

“This [Hamas] campaign targeted at least three major clans that the group accused of collaborating with Israel or looting aid,” said Nasser Khdour, Middle East analyst with the Armed Conflict Location & Event Data (ACLED).

“Hamas forces also clashed with four other Israel-backed militias operating across four of Gaza’s governorates in Israel-controlled zones. As internal violence later declined, Hamas worked to regain control west of the Yellow Line and deployed thousands of fighters and police officers to restore security governance. But as Hamas works to regain control in this security vacuum, intra-Palestinian violence is very likely to continue.”
