‘Disgrace to humanity’: Rescuers still trying to reach people under rubble
The Palestinian Civil Defence agency in Gaza says that, despite a lack of resources, rescuers are working to try to recover the dead and wounded from under the concrete debris after Israel’s attacks.
“The teams are still making great efforts to reach citizens trapped under the rubble, while hospitals are overwhelmed with the wounded and those in critical condition,” spokesman Mahmoud Basal said.
“What is happening in Gaza today is a disgrace to humanity and highlights the international community’s complicity through its silence in these violations.”
The agency called for an end to Israel’s attacks on Gaza, the protection of civilians, rescuers and medical staff, and deliveries of fuel, equipment and other needed supplies.
“The continuation of these crimes amidst the world’s silence is an unforgivable moral and humanitarian failure,” Basal said.
Israeli public backs PM Netanyahu on ‘targeting Hamas’ in Gaza
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will “try everything” to restart Israel’s war on Gaza, including preventing countries such as Turkiye and Qatar from sending troops for an international stabilisation force, an analyst says.
“It depends on the amount of leverage that the American administration will put on him, but I think Hamas is also playing games, playing for time, because they know down the road they will have to share responsibility with the Palestinian Authority,” said Akiva Eldar, a political commentator from Tel Aviv.
“Will Hamas coordinate with them, and will Israel allow them to function?” are major questions about the governance of Gaza, he added.
After a night of deadly attacks that killed more than 100 Palestinians in Gaza, Eldar told Al Jazeera that people in Israel are OK with the military continuing to attack despite the ceasefire.
“I think there’s public support in Netanyahu’s narrative, and his targeting of Hamas is very popular in Israel. Even in the Knesset, there’s no opposition to the use of military force. The Israeli public is actually buying the narratives that Hamas is playing games with the Americans,” he said.
Strikes on Gaza followed days of hawkish rhetoric from Israeli politicians
Over the days leading up to the latest strikes on Gaza, we saw a build-up of rhetoric from Israeli politicians.
Those comments saw Hamas accused of manipulating the guarantors of the ceasefire agreement, of withholding the bodies of Israeli captives, of foot-dragging and not doing what it was supposed to.
Some went as far as falsely claiming that Hamas was supposed to hand over all the bodies the day that the living captives were handed over, and that’s simply not the case.
There was a competition between Israeli politicians for who could sound the toughest and who could promise the harshest retribution against Hamas.
All the while, opposition leaders were taunting Netanyahu and saying that he was on a leash, that it wasn’t really his call, and that it was Donald Trump who would determine what would and would not be allowed.
