Spanish PM welcomes pro-Palestine protests at cycling race as ‘source of pride’

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez says the pro-Palestine demonstrations at the Vuelta a Espana cycling race filled him with “pride”.

The protests, which have targeted the Israel-Premier Tech team over the war in Gaza, have disrupted several stages of one of cycling’s three grand tours and cast doubt on whether the 21-day race could be completed.

In his first comments on the actions, Sanchez shared his “recognition and full respect for the athletes, but also our admiration for a people like Spain’s which mobilises for just causes, like Palestine”.

“Spain today shines as an example and as a source of pride, an example to an international community where it sees Spain taking a step forward in the defence of human rights,” he told a Socialist Party gathering in Malaga.

Still, authorities have increased security for the final in Madrid today, with 1,100 police officers deployed.

Spain’s Vuelta a Espana cycle race ends early as police, pro-Palestine protesters clash

The finale of the cycling grand tour ended prematurely earlier today after pro-Palestine protesters clashed with riot police.

The protests – targeting the Israel-Premier Tech team over the war in Gaza – escalated when demonstrators knocked down barriers and surged onto the road during the last leg of the prestigious race in Madrid.

“Crowds ended up flooding onto the street, pushing down the barriers and clashing with police dramatically,” journalist Lily Mayers told Al Jazeera from the Spanish capital. She said that police also deployed tear gas.

Earlier, Spain’s socialist prime minister, Pedro Sanchez, expressed “admiration for the Spanish people mobilising for just causes like Palestine”.

Madrid Mayor Jose Luis Martinez-Almeida blamed Sanchez for “instigating the protests”.

Dolls wrapped in shrouds outside Swedish Parliament honour children killed in Gaza

Pro-Palestinian activists organised a symbolic event this evening in front of the Swedish Parliament in Stockholm to commemorate the children killed in Gaza.

Outside the parliament building, wrapped in shrouds drenched in red paint, were placed over the Palestinian flag, in a scene symbolising the children who have been reported killed by Israel since October 7, 2023.

According to the organisers, the event aimed to highlight Sweden’s continued arms trade, despite repeated calls from the UN and the international community to stop exporting weapons to Israel during the war.

Between November 1947 and May 1948, months before any Arab state intervened, Zionist militias launched a campaign of terror, massacres, and expulsions across Palestine. Using declassified Israeli archives and eyewitness testimony, this video traces the six months of systematic ethnic cleansing that forced 200,000 Palestinians from their homes and left entire cities and villages destroyed BEFORE any Arab state intervened.

What is THY bidding, my master?

The bidding is ignore the past (except Oct 7 of course), nothing to see here

Netanyahu, Rubio share no new information in press conference

The main takeaway from the press conference here was that no new information presented to the public regarding the attack on Gaza, regarding Israeli military expansion and regarding Israel’s attack that has now been widely condemned and criticised internationally in the Qatari capital Doha.

Now, Netanyahu didn’t exactly say he would rule it out in the future, but he didn’t confirm or deny the results of that attack.

Rubio was shying away from condemning it. He said they’re just trying to find a path forward, they don’t want to focus on the past but focus on the future as to what is going to happen next.

Rubio calls for elimination of Hamas and release of captives

US Rubio reiterated during a press conference with PM Netanyahu that Hamas “cannot exist as an armed element that threatens the peace and security, not just of Israel but of the world”.

Rubio said:

  • The US would maintain unwavering support for Israel
  • “The people of Gaza deserve a better future” without Hamas
  • Netanyahu is committed “firmly” to the objectives of the return of the captives, both dead and alive
  • Peace in Gaza is not possible until captives are released and Hamas is eliminated
  • The elimination of Hamas might require a “concise military operation”
  • The US is focused on what happens next after the Israeli attack in Qatar.
  • The US will continue to urge Qatar to play a constructive role in mediation efforts to conclude a ceasefire deal after the Israeli attack last week.
  • Recognition of Palestinian statehood at UN next week “largely symbolic” with it only making Hamas “feel more emboldened”.
  • Warned of Israeli “counter-reaction” to recognition of a Palestinian state.

Hmm yeah it's Hamas that's bringing down international law and threatening the world...
And foreshadowing the next escalation of war crimes.

Rubio claims Palestinian state recognition may hinder efforts to end Gaza war

During his press conference with Netanyahu, Rubio also said that the push to recognise a Palestinian state paradoxically makes it “harder to end the war” as it “emboldens” Hamas.

In recent months, the UK, France, Belgium and other European countries have expressed a willingness to recognise a Palestinian state as a threat to Israel if it does not end its war on Gaza.

Makes it harder to finish the genocide / ethnic cleansing he means.

Israel takes ‘full responsibility’ for attack on Hamas in Qatar, Netanyahu says

Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu has said the decision to attack Hamas leaders in Qatar was an independent Israeli decision and “we take full responsibility” for the attack.

Speaking at a joint news conference with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Jerusalem, Netanyahu also said Israel and the United States will continue to act together to protect the two countries.

Rubio’s visit to Israel comes amid tensions with fellow US allies in the Middle East over Israel’s strike on Hamas leaders in Qatar and expansion of illegal settlements in the occupied West Bank.

“Rubio’s visit is a clear message that America stands with Israel in face of terror,” Netanyahu said.

US President Donald Trump “is the greatest friend that Israel has ever had in the White House,” he added.

That's US' repercussion to the attack on Qatar, kiss Donald's feet.

Israel taking full responsibility with total impunity. Means absolutely nothing. Just trying to get the heat of the US.

Israeli actions risk ‘capsizing’ international legal order, Albanese says

Francesca Albanese, the UN special rapporteur for human rights in occupied Palestine, has called on the international community to put an end to Israeli impunity over its abuses against Palestinians.

Speaking to Al Jazeera’s Hashem Ahelbarra in Geneva, Albanese called on countries to hold Israel to account for its actions in Gaza and respect international law.

“I wish the international community came back to its senses and realised that in the continued granting of impunity to Israel … is the path for the capsizing of the international legal order,” she said.

The failure to act was having ramifications for the security of the Middle East, she said.

“[It’s] about the stability of the region. What’s happening clearly is connected to the Gaza Strip.”

She said Israel would not have been able to act as it has without the active support of other parties, including supportive allies and the private sector.

“This is a genocide that could have never happened without the support and involvement of a number of actors,” she said.

Netanyahu refuses to rule out further strikes against Hamas

At the news conference with Rubio, Netanyahu has refused to rule out further strikes against Hamas members.

Netanyahu’s push to conquer Gaza will ‘bring disaster upon Israel’: Opposition figure

Leading Israeli opposition politician Yair Golan says Netanyahu’s push to conquer Gaza against the wishes of the country’s security establishment will “bring disaster upon Israel”.

In a post on X, Golan said the push to occupy Gaza would be a catastrophe for Israel that would “kill the hostages, lead to the deaths of soldiers, and incur enormous economic costs”.

He was responding to Israeli media reports that the military’s chief of staff, Eyal Zamir, had told a Knesset committee that Netanyahu had not given the army clear guidance on what comes next in Gaza.

Golan said Netanyahu is “unfit and has no legitimacy to make significant operational decisions” and reminded Zamir that he bears “heavy responsibility for … soldiers he sends into battle”.

Ben-Gvir calls for Israeli ‘police district’ on Gaza coast

Far-right Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir has revealed his desire to establish a “police district” on the coast of the Gaza Strip after its full seizure.

“I hope the soldiers will complete their mission, occupy Gaza, and encourage voluntary migration,” he said during a police ceremony, referring to Israel’s forced displacement and ethnic cleansing of Palestinians.

“For the record, I want to establish a police district in Gaza as well, on the beach, which is an ideal location.”

UN Human Rights Council to hold urgent debate on Tuesday on Israeli attack on Qatar

The UN Human Rights Council will hold an urgent debate on Tuesday to discuss the “recent military aggression carried out by the State of Israel against the State of Qatar”.

The council said in a statement that the urgent meeting will take place after it received two official requests, one from Pakistan on behalf of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation and another from Kuwait on behalf of the Gulf Cooperation Council.

Last week, Israel launched an attack on Hamas leaders in the Qatari capital, Doha, which was widely condemned by world leaders.

Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani said during a preparatory meeting on Sunday before today’s Arab and Islamic countries summit that it was time for the international community to “abandon dual standards and to hold Israel accountable for all the crimes it has committed”.

Muslim world expects action against Israel from Qatar summit: Pakistan’s foreign minister

Pakistani Foreign Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar has told Al Jazeera that the world’s Muslim population expects concrete action against Israel out of the emergency summit in Doha.

“If the countries and the leaders and the statesmen who meet … just sit, make strong speeches without a very clear roadmap [of] how to deal with this situation, it will be very sad,” he said.

Ishaq Dar added that he believed the Arab League had already discussed “some sort of combined security force”.

Asked if Pakistan would support such an approach, he replied: “Nuclear-powered Pakistan obviously would stand as a member of the Muslim world and discharge its duty.”

Expectations for action out of Doha summit ‘too high’

Any measures against Israel decided on at an emergency summit in Doha are unlikely to satisfy public expectations for action across the Arab world, says Mohamad Elmasry, media studies professor at the Doha Institute of Graduate Studies.

He said potential outcomes that could be considered include a military alliance, economic sanctions, closures of airspace to Israeli aircraft and withdrawals from the Abraham Accords.

But expectations were “maybe a bit too high” before the summit, he said.

“It’s likely that things are going to fall well short of expectations primarily because there are too many countries,” he said. “They have diverging interests, and they don’t all agree on taking these kinds of actions.”

He said that while “it should be clear” that the Abraham Accords normalising relations between Israel and a number of Arab states had been a bad idea, he would be “very surprised” if countries agreed to pull out.

“I think it’s unlikely because there are actors, like the UAE, like Morocco, who value their relationships with Israel.”

Just like the EU... Israel only needs to keep a few countries on board as die hard supporters to sabotage any cooperation...

Israeli forces storm several areas in Bethlehem

Israeli forces have stormed several areas in the Bethlehem governorate in the occupied West Bank. Wafa, citing security sources, reported that soldiers stormed the areas of al-Ubeidiya, Harmala, Rafidia, and Zaatara in the east.

Israeli forces raided several homes belonging to the Ali family in the Rakhma area to the east. A factory in the industrial zone was also raided, and its contents vandalised.

Israeli forces storm el-Bireh in West Bank

Israeli forces stormed the Saht Marhaba neighbourhood in el-Bireh city in the occupied West Bank, Wafa reports. So far, no clashes or arrests have been reported.

The army announced yesterday that it would conduct a military exercise in various areas of the West Bank during the early hours of Monday.

Rubio to inaugurate controversial tunnel project under Palestinian neighbourhood

On his visit to Israel, Rubio is expected to attend the inauguration of a tunnel for religious tourists that goes underneath the Palestinian neighbourhood of Silwan to the holy sites.

The project has stirred fears among Palestinian residents that it could further dilute their presence and possibly put at risk the physical foundations of their homes.

Fakhri Abu Diab, 63, a community spokesman in Silwan, said Rubio should instead come see homes, such as his own, that have been demolished by Israel in what Palestinians charge is a targeted campaign to erase them.

“Instead of siding with international law, the US is going the way of extremists and the far right and ignoring our history,” he said.

Rubio played down the political implications, calling it “one of the most important archaeological sites in the world”.

Coalition demands global ban on trade with illegal Israeli settlements

A coalition of 84 humanitarian and human rights organisations is demanding countries ban trade with Israeli settlements after July’s ruling by the International Criminal Court that declared Israel’s occupation unlawful.

The report said Israeli settlements now control more than 42 percent of the West Bank’s land, which has been confiscated from Palestinian communities. It added that the occupation by Israel and the settlers has devastated the Palestinian economy, costing an estimated $50b from 2000 to 2020, while Israel provides generous subsidies to settlement businesses through tax breaks and grants.

The report said current European labelling policies have failed – 90 percent of settlement-produced wines sold in Europe are mislabelled as “Made in Israel” – and the EU imports 15 times more goods from settlements, which are illegal under international law, than from Palestinian producers.

The report also identified major European companies enabling settlements: JCB, which makes construction equipment used to demolish Palestinian homes; Siemens, which provides rail services to settlements; Carrefour, which operates stores in occupied territory; and banks like Barclays that provide billions in financing.

Netanyahu has given no clear guidance on Gaza future: Israeli army official

Israeli chief of staff, Eyal Zamir, has told a Knesset committee that the PM has not given the army clear guidance on what comes next in Gaza, according to a report by Israeli media outlet Ynet.

Zamir told the Knesset Subcommittee on Intelligence on Friday that “the prime minister is not telling us what comes next, we don’t know what to prepare for”.

“If they want a military government, then they should say military government.”

Ynet also reported that Zamir harshly criticised the controversial US and Israel-linked GHF, which has been tasked with distributing aid but has led to the killings of more than 1,000 Palestinians, calling it a “failure”.

The Israeli military has ordered residents of the al-Ghafri Tower and nearby tents housing displaced Palestinians at the intersection of Jaber bin Hayyan Street and Omar al-Mukhtar Street in Gaza City to leave immediately, pending an attack, on the grounds that “Hamas terrorist infrastructure exists inside or adjacent to” the area, according to a statement.

The statement also called on people who have not yet fled the Gaza City port area and Remal neighbourhood to leave.

Journalist among 2 people killed in Israeli attack on Gaza City

Two people have been killed, including journalist Mohammed al-Kouifi, and several injured in an Israeli attack on a tent on the rooftop of a residential building in the Nassr neighbourhood of Gaza City.

Al-Kouifi was working with the Safa news agency and Al-Aqsa TV channel.

An independent analysis by Al Jazeera has found that at least 278 journalists and media workers have been killed by Israel in Gaza since October 2023, including 10 from the Al Jazeera Media Network.

Palestianians enduring ‘unimaginable and unbearable’ journeys south

The situation is actually disastrous. What we’re hearing from Palestinians has been unimaginable and unbearable. Palestinians are telling us they have been walking for hours and hours on foot because there is no transportation and most of them are not able to afford the high expenses.

We have been seeing a lot of pregnant women, and we have been seeing children also walking this distance under the very, very strong sun.

Now people who make it to this area and make it safely come here very thirsty and do not have any food or shelter, and they need to start from scratch.

‘Families are sleeping in the open’ in al-Mawasi

Palestinians who have been displaced by Israel’s offensive in northern Gaza to the supposed humanitarian zone of al-Mawasi in the south say they face unbearable hardships in their new location.

Ahmed Awad said he had fled south from northern Gaza amid heavy military bombardment, hoping to find refuge in al-Mawasi. “We arrived here at midnight only to find no water, no toilets, nothing,” he said. “Families are sleeping in the open. The situation is extremely dire.”

Abedallah Aram said the tens of thousands of displaced people sheltering in al-Mawasi faced severe shortages of clean water and food.

“Inside these tents, people are hungry and malnourished. Winter is approaching, and we urgently need new tents,” he said. “On top of that, this area cannot handle more displaced families.”

Three people killed in al-Mawasi attack

At least three people have been killed by Israeli fire in the al-Mawasi area, southwest of Khan Younis, southern Gaza, sources at the Nasser Medical Complex told our colleagues.

Seven, including 3 premature babies, die of malnutrition

Due to malnutrition, the siege and a lack of a suitable environment, four fetuses and three premature babies have died in Nasser Medical Complex.

According to Gaza’s Health Ministry, at least 422 people, including 145 children, have died due to the ongoing hunger crisis. Since the UN-backed IPC report last month that officially declared famine in northern Gaza, at least 144 deaths have been recorded, including 30 children.

Israeli forces kill 5 aid seekers in southern Gaza

At least five Palestinians waiting for aid were killed by gunfire south of Khan Younis, Nasser Medical Complex has told Al Jazeera.

Israeli attacks hit 10 UNRWA buildings in 4 days

In the last four days, 10 UNRWA buildings in Gaza have been hit by Israeli forces, the head of the agency, Philippe Lazzarini, says.

This includes “seven schools and two clinics currently used as shelters for thousands of displaced people”.

In a post on X, Lazzarini added that UNRWA, responsible for distributing humanitarian aid across Gaza, was forced to close a clinic at the Shati Camp, one of Gaza’s largest refugee camps, and added that “vital water & sanitation services are now only at half capacity”.

Foreign doctors say Israel systematically targeting Gaza’s children

Foreign doctors who have volunteered in Gaza say they have treated more than 100 children shot in the head or chest, clear evidence, they argue, that Israel is deliberately targeting minors.

In testimonies collected by the Dutch daily Volkskrant, 15 out of 17 doctors described encountering children aged below 15 with single bullet wounds to the head or chest.

Together, they identified 114 such cases during their missions in Gaza. Many of the children died, while others survived with devastating injuries.

Gaza’s Health Ministry warns Palestinian patients trapped in ‘triangle of terror’

Gaza’s Health Ministry warns that patients in the enclave are stuck in a “triangle of terror: hunger, bombing and deprivation of treatment”.

In a statement, the ministry said the medical teams in hospitals cannot continue providing life-saving support with depleted stocks of crucial medicines and tests.

“The Ministry of Health is gasping its last breaths in urgent and life-saving medical needs. Many patients and wounded are facing critical moments with unpredictable outcomes,” the statement said.

The ministry also issued a call to all “concerned parties” to exercise their influence and ensure the entry of emergency medical supplies.

Israel displacing Palestinians to ‘concentration camps’ in al-Mawasi

Gaza’s Health Ministry says Israel is forcibly displacing Palestinians under the threat of air strikes to the overcrowded “concentration camps” in the southern area of al-Mawasi.

In a statement, the ministry warned that al-Mawasi lacks the “basic necessities of life, including water, food, health services” and is an area “where illnesses spread dangerously”.

“The forcibly displaced are subjected to direct targeting and killing both inside the camps and when attempting to leave them, constituting a blatant violation of all humanitarian and international laws,” it added.

As the army has continued with its plans to seize Gaza City, residents have been forced out under threat of attack to travel southwards to the area, which the army has designated as safe.

However, al-Mawasi has also come under attack by Israel, rendering no place in the enclave safe to live or free from attacks.

Palestinian Health Ministry reports 3 more hunger-related deaths

The Palestinian Health Ministry in Gaza says at least three people have died in the past 24 hours from hunger, bringing the total number of people killed during the war due to hunger and starvation to 425, including 125 children.
