Forums - Politics - Israel-Hamas war, Gaza genocide

As if it couldn't get any weirder. Trump's White house is Netanyahu's house.

White House says it warned Qatar of Israeli strike

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt has told reporters that the Trump administration was notified by the US military that Israel was attacking Hamas, which “very unfortunately was located in a section of Doha, the capital of Qatar”.

“Unilaterally bombing inside Qatar, a sovereign nation and close ally of the United States that is working very hard and bravely taking risks with us to broker peace, does not advance Israel or America’s goals,” she said. “However, eliminating Hamas, who have profited off the misery of those living in Gaza, is a worthy goal.”

Leavitt said that Trump “immediately directed” Special Envoy Steve Witkoff to inform Qatar of the attack.

Trump spoke with Netanyahu after strike

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said that US President Donald Trump sees the attack as an “opportunity for peace”, despite widespread condemnation and speculation that the strike could deal a serious blow to any Gaza negotiation efforts. The White House says the two leaders spoke after the attack.

“The prime minister told President Trump that he wants to make peace, and quickly,” said Leavitt. “President Trump believes that this unfortunate incident could serve as an opportunity for peace.”

When asked, Leavitt would not expound on whether or not there would be consequences for Israel or its prime minister, nor whether Trump is upset with Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu.

US says strikes on Qatar ‘will not happen again’

The White House press secretary has also praised Qatar and said that Trump has assured Qatari officials that such attacks will not be repeated.

“The president views Qatar as a strong ally and friend of the United States, and feels very badly about the location of this attack,” said Leavitt.

“The president also spoke to the emir and prime minister of Qatar and thanked them for their support and friendship to our country,” she added. “He assured them that such a thing will not happen again on their soil.”

White House seeking to ‘bury bad news’

The Trump administration’s ambiguous stance towards the attack in Doha seems to indicate that the Israeli strikes were a failure that could embarrass both Israeli and US leaders, Rob Geist Pinfold tells Al Jazeera

“On the one hand, this press conference was about burying bad news,” the analyst said, noting that White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt did not mention the attack until prompted.

“The US does not want to talk about this. And it also tells you that this attack did not achieve its goals”, he added.

“I think we can infer that had this strike killed ‘Hamas terrorists’, then the US would be taking credit for it and saying they were involved in it. But the fact that doesn’t seem to have occurred, and, as we’ve heard, there’s at least one member of the Qatari security forces killed, suggests that they’re trying to distance themselves from it,” said Pinfold.

Qatar’s UN ambassador tells Security Council investigation under way

Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif Al Thani, Qatar’s permanent representative to the United Nations, has informed the UN Security Council in a letter that the Gulf country is “conducting investigations at the highest level” following Israel’s attack targeting a Hamas delegation in Doha.

Qatar “will not tolerate this aggressive Israeli behavior that undermines regional security, and will not accept any action targeting its security and sovereignty,” the letter said.

“Further details will be announced as soon as they become available, and we will keep the Council informed of the latest developments.”

Qatar denies being informed of Israeli attack

Majed al-Ansari, spokesperson for Qatar’s Foreign Ministry, denies the White House claims that the US informed Qatar about the Israeli strikes before they took place.

“The statements being circulated that the State of Qatar was pre-informed of the attack are completely false,” al-Ansari said in a statement. “The call that was received from an American official came during the sound of the explosions that resulted from the Israeli attack in Doha.”

White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt had said earlier that after being told about Israel’s plan, “Trump immediately directed Special Envoy Witkoff to inform the Qataris of the impending attack, which he did”.

Egypt’s el-Sisi speaks with Qatar’s Sheikh Tamim, condemns Israeli attack

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi has expressed his country’s “full solidarity” with Qatar during a call with its emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the Egyptian presidency has said.

“The president stressed Egypt’s strong condemnation and denunciation of the aggressive act committed by Israel against the brotherly State of Qatar, affirming Egypt’s categorical rejection of any violation of the sovereignty of the State of Qatar,” el-Sisi’s office said.

Qatar and Egypt have been leading mediation efforts to reach a ceasefire in Gaza.

OIC calls Doha attack a ‘blatant violation of international law’

The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation has condemned the Israeli strikes on the Qatari capital, calling them a “blatant violations of international law, UN Charter and global norms”.

“The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation once again calls on the international community, particularly the UN Security Council, to assume its responsibilities and compel Israel to end its dangerous and ongoing aggression in the region and to respect international law and relevant UN resolutions,” the 57-country bloc said in a statement.

Qatari PM calls the Israeli attack ‘state terrorism’

Qatari Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani says the Israeli strikes on Doha can only be interpreted as “state terrorism”.

Sheikh Mohammed says Qatar reserves its right to respond to Israel and will not tolerate any violations to its sovereignty.

He said Qatar will take a comprehensive approach to respond to the Israeli assault and deter future attacks.

The Gulf state is also forming a team under Qatari diplomat Mohammed bin Abdulaziz al-Khulaifi that will take legal actions in response to the Israeli attack.

Qatar calls for regional response to Israel

Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed says Netanyahu is taking the entire region to an irreversible point with his disregard for international laws and norms.

“Today, we have reached a turning point for there to be a response from the entire region against such barbaric conduct,” he said.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani says Israeli PM Netanyahu has been spoiling every attempt to find opportunities for peace. He said that beyond the illegality of the Israeli attack, attempting to kill negotiators in a country leading ceasefire negotiations is unethical and treacherous.

The Qatari PM added that Netanyahu “claims that he is achieving stability in the region, when he is only achieving instability in the region with narcissistic delusions for his personal gains”.

Qatar’s Sheikh Mohammed says Doha has been in touch with friendly countries and will soon announce action to confront the Israeli attack. “Working to violate the sovereignty of nations without any care must not be overlooked and must be confronted by all means,” he said.

Sheikh Mohammed dismisses claims and reports that the Hamas leaders may have survived because of a US tip about the Israeli strikes before they happened. “This was a treacherous attack, 100 percent, it was not known until it happened,” he told reporters.

Qatar says current ceasefire talks may no longer be ‘valid’

Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani says Qatar will continue to work to end Israel’s war on Gaza, but raised doubts about the viability of the most recent talks over the US proposal.

“When it comes to the current talks, I don’t think there is something valid right now after we’ve seen such an attack,” he said.

Strike could further Israel’s status as a ‘pariah’ with Gulf states

Andreas Krieg, a senior lecturer at King’s College London, has said that Israel’s attack in Qatar could have long-term consequences for its relations with Gulf states.

“If this comes to be true, that their [Hamas] leadership has survived, then what we’re seeing is a tactical disaster. Israel has certainly gambled, it took a massive risk, and, if they were unsuccessful with taking that risk, it comes with a massive cost,” Krieg told Al Jazeera.

“The primary cost is strategic and diplomatic. I think normalisation with Saudi Arabia was dead anyway, but I think a direct attack by Israel on the GCC countries will also put into question the Abraham Accords and the entire normalisation track that Trump has supported since 2020. It certainly puts to bed any normalisation between Saudi [Arabia] and Israel, and it will increase the fear within the Gulf States of Israel as a pariah state, which now rings very similar to the pariah status of Iran,” he added.

Doha attack shows Israel has no interest in ceasefire: US senator

Mark Warner, a top Democratic US lawmaker, has told Al Jazeera’s Fault Lines programme: “Attacking Qatar at this point, frankly, individuals that have been part of the negotiations team – this obviously, is even further indication that the Israeli government has no interest in any kind of ceasefire.”

‘Netanyahu must be held accountable’: Ilhan Omar

The Democratic US congresswoman has condemned the Israeli attack in Doha.

“This attack, which violates international law, not only further harms the possibility of a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas but it also jeopardizes the lives of the remaining hostages,” Omar wrote in a social media post.

“Netanyahu must be held accountable for his war crimes.”

Trump says US tip to Qatar was ‘too late to stop the attack’

In a long-awaited social media post, the US president echoes an earlier White House statement about the attack in Qatar – with a few edits.

The White House had suggested earlier that the US informed Qatar of the attack before it happened, a claim that Doha was quick to deny. Now, Trump appears to be backtracking on that statement.

“I immediately directed Special Envoy Steve Witkoff to inform the Qataris of the impending attack, which he did, however, unfortunately, too late to stop the attack,” the US president said.

Trump also said he directed Secretary of State Marco Rubio to finalise a defence cooperation agreement with Qatar.

‘Trump administration not coherent, rational in its foreign policy’

Former US intelligence officer Glenn Carle says that reflecting on why the US failed to stop Israel’s attack on Qatar relies on the assumption that the Trump’s administration is being rational.

“All of us who observe international relations, intelligence and US foreign policy tend to seek coherence coming out of Trump’s White House, but what we really should know is that it is capricious,” Carle told Al Jazeera.

“It’s a series of decisions that President Trump believes help him in a given moment that doesn’t last more than the next news headline. It’s not at all inconsistent to find inconsistency and irrationality in [his policies],” the analyst continued.

Carle added that while the attack in Qatar doesn’t help peace, Trump let it go forward “because he doesn’t have a grand strategy.” What drives the US president’s decisions is that “he wants to look good and get praised, and that leads to a series of rudderless decisions.”

Qatar’s PM warns of regional danger in first presser

Qatar’s prime minister has held the first official briefing about what happened, in which he called Israel’s attack “state terrorism” and said there is a rogue actor in the region – Israel’s Prime Minister Netanyahu – who is leading the region into chaos at an irreversible level …

He also talked about the timing of the attack… which coincided with a meeting of Hamas’s negotiating team discussing the US proposal for a deal to end the war on Gaza and reach a ceasefire deal, and said Israel had sabotaged that.

Sheikh Mohammed was asked if there was still room for diplomacy, and answered that after the attack, there was very little room left.

Commenting on the US’s role, whether the Israelis informed the Americans, the prime minister said American officials contacted Qatari officials 10 minutes after the attack …

He said the country was unable to thwart it because the drones were undetectable by the radar.

Iran calls on Muslim world ‘to act in unison’ against Israel

Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has reacted to the attack in Qatar, saying the “only way to decisively address the recklessness of the Israeli regime is for the Muslim world to act in unison.”

“Iran stands ready to deepen cooperation in the interest of confronting threats to international peace and security,” the foreign minister said on X.

Iran fought a 12-day conflict with Israel in June. Tehran’s relations with Gulf countries have been strained by geopolitical rivalries and ideological differences.

Israel’s attack in Qatar may bring war in Gaza to an end

The drone strikes targeting a Hamas delegation in Doha point to a premeditated attempt to derail negotiations and to make sure the ceasefire does not happen, Israeli former diplomat Alon Pinkas says.

The delegation was meeting in the Qatari capital to discuss a US proposal for a ceasefire deal. Instead of following Trump’s leadership, Netanyahu opted for striking the officials as they met with Qatari mediators.

“There is a breaking point even for Donald Trump,” Pinkas said, suggesting the US president may have run out of patience with the Israeli leader.

“Trump might pick up the phone and say: ‘Now I’ve had enough, I stood by you, I’ve supported you and risked political allies – enough is enough, you have 24-48 hours to end the war or there will be consequences’,” the analyst said.

“If he feels he’s being conned by Netanyahu, that could [bring about] the end of the war.”

Algeria asks UN Security Council to meet

Algeria has asked for the UN Security Council (UNSC) to meet, diplomats said. The country requested that the 15-member council meet on Wednesday. Earlier today, Qatar formally protested to the UNSC.

Israel wants to force Palestinians ‘to bend the knee’

Jeremy Scahill, cofounder of Drop Site News, says the attack in Doha is “yet another sign” that “neither the United States nor Israel are interested in actually having a negotiated end” to the war on Gaza.

Scahill underscored that Hamas made major concessions in accepting a ceasefire proposal last month, dropping demands for a timetable for Israeli withdrawal from the border area with Egypt and lowering the number of Palestinian captives it is requesting in exchange for Israelis held in Gaza.

The veteran journalist said Israel did not even respond to the Hamas-approved proposal, and instead pushed on with the assault on Gaza City in a plan to forcibly displace more than one million Palestinians.

“They want to try to force the Palestinians to bend the knee, liberate the Israeli captives and continue on with their war of annihilation,” Scahill told AJ+.

Israel bombed Qatar, attempting to assassinate senior Hamas leadership. How involved is the US in this major escalation? And what’s next? Mehdi Hasan sat down with foreign policy analyst Rula Jebreal and Gaza political analyst Muhammad Shehada to break everything down.

Watch the full video to hear Rula explain why Donald Trump likely knew about the strikes, hear Muhammad break down the way Israel targets peace negotiators over and over, and find out why this latest news could impact “every other country in the world.”

‘It is clear they have no interest in a ceasefire’: Rashida Tlaib

The Palestinian American congresswoman has renewed calls for ending US funding and the sending of weapons to Israel after the Doha attack. “The Israeli government is again attempting to murder ceasefire negotiators, now bombing the capital of a US ally with total impunity,” she wrote in a social media post.

“It is clear they have no interest in a ceasefire to end their genocide of Palestinians.”

Israeli politicians unite behind Doha strikes

Across the ideological spectrum, Israeli officials and opposition figures have praised the bombing of a residential area targeting Hamas leaders in Doha.

Far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir hailed the assault as a “historic decision”, while President Isaac Herzog – seen as a centrist by Israel’s standards – said the attack was “important and correct”.

Outside the government, opposition figures lined up to back the strikes.

“Congratulating the Air Force, [military], Shin Bet, and all security forces on an exceptional operation to thwart our enemies,” opposition head Yair Lapid wrote on X, despite the apparent failure of the assassination attempt.

Blue and White-National Unity alliance leader Benny Gantz was equally approving. “I commend the political echelon for the decision to carry out the targeted killing and the [military], Shin Bet, and all security forces for executing the operation,” he said.

Avigdor Lieberman, leader of Israel’s opposition Yisrael Beiteinu party, declared that “justice was served”.

“Thanks to the … security forces who made it clear to the entire world: Jewish blood is not cheap,” he wrote in a social media post.

US Muslim group slams Trump’s ‘Israel First’ policies

Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) highlights that with the assassination attempt in Qatar, Israel has attacked five Arab countries in the past days, including a suspected Israeli drone strike on a Gaza-bound humanitarian flotilla in Tunisia.

“We strongly condemn the out-of-control Israeli government’s bombings of Tunisia, Syria, Lebanon and even Qatar, all in the past few days,” CAIR said in a statement.

“The Trump administration’s Israel First policy is not only enabling the genocide in Gaza and ethnic cleansing in the West Bank, but violence across the region.”

US senator says Netanyahu government ‘completely out of control’

Leftist Senator Bernie Sanders has reiterated his call for the US to cut off weapons to Israel after today’s strike on Qatar.

“Netanyahu’s extremist government is completely out of control. Not only are they starving children in Gaza, they are now breaking international law by dropping bombs on Qatar, a US security partner,” Sanders wrote in a post on X.

“When is enough, enough? NO MORE US MILITARY AID TO ISRAEL.”

CNN is playing apologist for Trump and Israel

https://www.cnn.com/world/live-news/israel-qatar-attack-09-09-25

Israeli Prime Minister Benajmin Netanyahu portrayed the attack as a peacemaking action. In remarks at the US Embassy, he said that Israel has “accepted” the US’ latest proposed principles for a ceasefire. In an earlier statement, the prime minister’s office said the strike was “a wholly independent Israeli operation.”

Israeli settler ran over Palestinian man north of Hebron: Palestinian media

We have some news from the occupied West Bank, where settler attacks against Palestinians have surged in recent weeks.

The Palestinian news service Wafa is reporting that a Palestinian man was ran over by an Israeli settler in the town of Sa’ir, north of Hebron.

Wafa reported that the victim was a Palestinian man named Munadil Ali Qassem Kawazbeh, who suffered “bruises and wounds” after being struck by the vehicle. The report, which cited anonymous security sources, said that Kawazbeh was transferred to a medical centre.

At least nine aid seekers killed in Gaza today: Palestinian media

The Palestinian news service Wafa reports that at least nine Palestinian humanitarian aid seekers have been killed since the beginning of the day in Gaza, with a total of 52 Palestinians killed today in Israeli attacks.

The report, which cites medical sources, says that the nine aid seekers were killed in southern Gaza. Israeli forces have targeted and killed thousands of Palestinian aid seekers over the last several months.

Israeli bombardment hits mosque in Gaza’s Deir el-Balah

A video verified by Al Jazeera’s Sanad agency shows the moment an Israeli strike targeted the Ibn Taymiyyah Mosque in Deir el-Balah, in the central Gaza Strip.

The video shows a flash of light as the mosque’s minaret is engulfed in a thick cloud of smoke. It appeared to have remained standing despite the explosion.

What id like to know is how Netanyahu always seems to know precise locations about hezb and hamas , but for sone reason after all this time, apparently doesn't know where hostages are being kept
