Israeli tanks advance in Gaza City as scholars' association says Israel is committing genocide

https://www.cbc.ca/news/world/gaza-city-invasion-1.7622475

Israel pushed tanks deeper into Gaza City and detonated explosives-laden vehicles in one suburb as airstrikes killed at least 19 people across the city on Monday, Palestinian officials and witnesses said.

Israel is pushing ahead with a plan to take full control of the whole Gaza Strip, starting with Gaza City. Its stated goals are destroying Hamas and rescuing the remaining 48 hostages after nearly two years of war, even though the majority of hostages recovered have been through ceasefire exchanges and not military means.

Residents said Israeli forces sent old armoured vehicles into the eastern parts of the overcrowded Sheikh Radwan neighbourhood, then blew them up remotely, destroying several houses and forcing more families to flee.

Legal criteria met for genocide

The reports came as the president of the world's leading genocide scholars' association said it had passed a resolution saying the legal criteria have been met to establish that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza.

Eighty-six per cent of those who voted among the 500-member International Association of Genocide Scholars backed the resolution declaring Israel's "policies and actions in Gaza" had met the legal definition set out in Article II of the 1948 UN convention on genocide. The organization joins other major human rights groups, including two in Israel, in calling the country's actions in Gaza a genocide.

The three-page resolution from the International Association of Genocide Scholars, which includes Holocaust experts among its membership, calls on Israel to "immediately cease all acts that constitute genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity against Palestinians in Gaza." That includes starvation, deliberate attacks against and killing of civilians and depriving the population of humanitarian aid.

"This is a definitive statement from experts in the field of genocide studies that what is going on on the ground in Gaza is genocide," the association's president, Melanie O'Brien, told Reuters. O'Brien is also a professor of international law at the University of Western Australia and specializes in genocide.

"There is no justification for the commission of war crimes, crimes against humanity or genocide, not even self-defence."

The organization joins a growing chorus calling for Israel's campaign in Gaza to be described as a genocide as violations of international law pile up. Amnesty International, as well as Israeli human rights group B'Tselem, have already described Israel's actions in Gaza as such.

Deaths, starvation reported across Gaza

The Israeli military issued a statement saying its forces were fighting Hamas across the enclave and over the past day had struck several military outposts that had been used to stage attacks on its troops.

The Gaza Health Ministry said at least 98 Palestinians were killed by Israeli fire across the enclave in the past 24 hours. It added that nine more people, including three children, have died of malnutrition and starvation over the past day, raising deaths from such causes to at least 348, including 127 children.

More than 250 media outlets protest over Israel murdering Gaza journalists

More than 250 media outlets in over 70 countries have staged a front page protest highlighting the killing of more than 200 journalists in Israel’s war on Gaza, the Reporters Without Borders (RSF) media freedom group says.

“At the rate journalists are being killed in Gaza by the Israeli army, there will soon be no-one left to keep you informed,” the group’s general director, Thibaut Bruttin, said in a statement on Monday.

The protest, also supported by the global campaign movement Avaaz, was featured on the websites of news outlets including Al Jazeera, the British newspaper The Independent, French newspapers La Croix and L’Humanite, and the German newspapers Tageszeitung and Frankfurter Rundschau, according to RSF.

About 220 journalists have been killed during Israel’s war in Gaza since it began on October 7, 2023, according to RSF data. Independent analysis by Al Jazeera reveals that at least 278 journalists and media workers have been killed by Israel over the past 22 months, including 10 from the network.

Those participating in the protest “demand an end to impunity for Israeli crimes against Gaza’s reporters, the emergency evacuation of reporters seeking to leave the Strip and that foreign press be granted independent access”, the RSF statement said.

The media group said it has filed four complaints at the International Criminal Court for war crimes it said the Israeli army has committed against journalists in Gaza.

Sumud Flotilla for Gaza departs Barcelona again after delay due to storm

The Global Sumud Flotilla carrying aid to the Israeli-blockaded Gaza Strip departed Barcelona again on Monday evening, several hours after poor weather forced it to return to the Spanish port, according to a journalist travelling on one of the boats.

Earlier on Monday, the flotilla – which had set off from Barcelona on Sunday – said in a statement on X that strong winds of more than 30 knots (55.6 kilometres per hour, or 34.5 miles per hour) on the Mediterranean Sea could have posed a problem for smaller boats in the convoy.

The flotilla said that it conducted a sea trial and made the decision to return to port in Barcelona to allow the storm to pass.

Mauricio Morales, a journalist reporting for Al Jazeera from on board the Alma boat, said that the flotilla began moving out from the port again at about 7:30pm local time (17:30 GMT) on Monday following a general meeting of all volunteers.

The flotilla comprises dozens of small civilian vessels carrying volunteers and humanitarian supplies. It planned to meet up with a second wave of vessels in Tunisia on Thursday, but that plan has now been slightly delayed.

This is the third aid flotilla of its kind in recent months to attempt to break the Israeli siege on Gaza. Previous attempts have been unsuccessful, with Israeli naval forces illegally intercepting the boats in international waters.

Organisers said the Global Sumud Flotilla is the largest maritime mission to Gaza, bringing together more than 50 ships and delegations from at least 44 countries.

Israeli forces open fire on ambulance, family during West Bank raid

Israeli forces have opened fire on a family in the occupied West Bank town of Tammun, injuring five people, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health.

The soldiers also opened fire on an ambulance during the raid on Tammun, the Palestine Red Crescent reported, according to our colleagues at Al Jazeera Arabic.

The incidents took place yesterday evening.

Israeli military, police say they shot man during West Bank raid

We have reported earlier that Israeli forces opened fire on a family as well as an ambulance in the occupied West Bank town of Tammun yesterday, injuring five people.

Now, the Israeli military and police issued a statement saying Israeli forces shot a Palestinian man “involved in terrorist activities” yesterday while trying to arrest him during a raid on Tammun in the occupied West Bank.

“The security forces will continue to operate to thwart terrorism and to enforce the law against any terrorist who attempts to harm Israeli civilians,” the Israeli joint statement said.

Israeli forces issue demolition orders for Palestinian homes in occupied West Bank

Israeli forces have issued demolition orders against Palestinian homes in the village of al-Mughayyir, 27km (17 miles) northeast of Ramallah, our colleagues at Al Jazeera Arabic report.

Israeli forces arrest mayor of Hebron: Report

Israeli forces have arrested the mayor of Hebron, Tayseer Abu Sneineh, during a raid on the city in the occupied West Bank, according to the Wafa news agency and the Palestinian Prisoners’ Media Office (ASRA).

Wafa quoted security and local sources who said Israeli forces stormed the mayor’s home in Hebron, searching it and ransacking its contents, before arresting him and taking him to an unknown location.

The Israeli military also set up checkpoints around the Hebron governorate and closed a number of main and secondary roads with iron gates, cement blocks, and earth mounds, according to Wafa.

ASRA cited Hebron’s Municipal Council as saying “this brutal attack does not only target the mayor himself, but also targets the will of the people of Hebron and its elected institutions, and constitutes a blatant assault on the democratic process and on our people’s right to manage their affairs and serve their city with freedom and dignity.”

The council called on “all international, human rights and humanitarian institutions to assume their legal and moral responsibilities and pressure for his immediate release, and to put an end to these escalating violations against the city’s leaders and citizens”.

At least 25 Palestinians arrested in Israeli raids across occupied West Bank

Israeli forces have arrested 25 Palestinians in dawn raids across the occupied West Bank, according to the Palestinian Prisoners’ Media Office (ASRA).

The raids took place in numerous locations across eight governorates, the office reported, with the most arrests occurring in Nablus governorate, where 13 people were detained in Qusra, Kafr Qallil and other towns.

In the town of Bal’a in Tulkarem governorate, Israeli forces used a military bulldozer and police dogs during the raids, causing widespread property damage, the office reported, while clashes occurred with residents during raids in Kafr Thulth town in Qalqilya governorate.

Israeli settlers injure Palestinian man near occupied West Bank’s Nablus city

A Palestinian man has been transferred to hospital after being injured during an attack by Israeli settlers on the town of Deir Sharaf, west of Nablus in the occupied West Bank, according to the Wafa news agency.

In a separate attack, groups of Israeli settlers stormed the village of Kisan, east of Bethlehem, throwing stones at Palestinian homes, the agency reported.

In another incident, Israeli settlers stormed the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in occupied East Jerusalem under the protection of the Israeli police, performing rituals at the site, Wafa reported.

Belgium to recognise Palestinian state, impose sanctions on Israel

Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prevot has announced his country will recognise a Palestinian state at the United Nations General Assembly later this month, and is imposing sanctions on Israel.

Prevot said in a post on X the sanctions included a ban on the import of products from illegal Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank, “a review of public procurement policies with Israeli companies” and the designation of two Israeli government ministers and “several violent settlers” as persona non grata in Belgium.

He added that the recognition would only be formalised by royal decree once the last captive has been released from Gaza and “Hamas no longer has any role in managing Palestine.”

So they're not going to recognize a Palestinian state this month. It will take a lot longer for a new government to replace the current one. Those sanctions are also mostly meaningless, no sanctions on Israel, not even words of an arms embargo.

It is clear all those former colonial powers are not in it to stop this colonial genocide, only as far as to promote plausible deniability of complicity.
Mostly empty words for virtue signalling and distraction.

‘South Africa-style sanctions’ needed against Israel alongside recognition of Palestinian state

Moves by Belgium and other countries to recognise Palestinian statehood are a significant step in the right direction but need to be accompanied by further tangible actions to isolate Israel and help Palestinians, an academic says.

Tamer Qarmout, associate professor at the Doha Institute of Graduate Studies, told Al Jazeera that tough, comprehensive sanctions on Israel were required – as well as further pressure on Washington – “especially when we have this perfect alignment between the American administration and the Israeli government”.

“We want something similar to the South African model when the apartheid regime was isolated by international sanctions,” he said. “If this does not happen immediately after these recognitions, I’m afraid time is not on the Palestinians’ side.”

eDreams to keep blocking accommodation listings in Israeli-occupied West Bank

Spanish travel company eDreams ODIGEO has withdrawn and will continue to block listings of accommodation in illegal Israeli settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories, its chief financial officer says.

David Elizaga told the Reuters news agency that the company has always had a policy of not offering services in the illegal settlements in the Israeli-occupied territories, but said some listings automatically appeared on its website after owners uploaded them on platforms.

The issue came to the fore at an Annual General Meeting in July that attracted pro-Palestinian protests against the company after it was the only Spanish firm named on the United Nations High Commissioner of Human Rights’ list, published in 2023.

Elizaga said the company activated location screenings to filter out apartments and hotels offered in the illegal settlements.

In addition to its contact with the United Nations, eDreams has been in touch with NGOs and local organisations to ensure it does not again appear in lists of companies that provide “services and utilities supporting the maintenance and existence of settlements”.

UK’s top diplomat expresses ‘outrage’ at Israel, promises $20m in Gaza aid

British Foreign Minister David Lammy has said he is “outraged” by Israel’s refusal to allow sufficient aid into Gaza, in a statement announcing 15 million pounds ($20.1m) in aid and medical care.

“We need a massive humanitarian response to stop the famine in Gaza. I’m announcing further vital funding for aid, but it must all be let in,” he said in a post on X. The post included footage of Lammy’s statement to parliament, in which he expressed his anger at Israel for blocking the aid needed in response to famine in the territory.

“This is not a natural disaster, it’s a man-made famine in the 21st century and I’m outraged by the Israeli government’s refusal to allow in sufficient aid,” he said, promising “a flood of aid” to desperate Palestinians.

UK police arrest 5 for supporting Palestine Action

UK police have arrested five “key spokespeople” for Defend Our Juries, a group which has been campaigning for the British government to revoke its terror ban on Palestine Action, the group says.

Defend Our Juries has led protests against the UK government’s proscription of Palestine Action – which described itself as a non-violent pro-Palestinian direct action group – under anti-terror laws.

The proscription made support for Palestine Action a criminal offence, and police have arrested more than 700 people who have held up signs expressing support for Palestine Action at protests since the ban was implemented in July.

In a statement on X, Defend Our Juries said five key figures within the group had been arrested in dawn raids, including co-founder Tim Crosland, who was detained “just hours” before he was due to hold a press conference announcing a further protest on Saturday.

The group said Saturday’s protest would proceed despite the arrests.
