Israeli forces arrest mayor of Hebron: Report
Israeli forces have arrested the mayor of Hebron, Tayseer Abu Sneineh, during a raid on the city in the occupied West Bank, according to the Wafa news agency and the Palestinian Prisoners’ Media Office (ASRA).
Wafa quoted security and local sources who said Israeli forces stormed the mayor’s home in Hebron, searching it and ransacking its contents, before arresting him and taking him to an unknown location.
The Israeli military also set up checkpoints around the Hebron governorate and closed a number of main and secondary roads with iron gates, cement blocks, and earth mounds, according to Wafa.
ASRA cited Hebron’s Municipal Council as saying “this brutal attack does not only target the mayor himself, but also targets the will of the people of Hebron and its elected institutions, and constitutes a blatant assault on the democratic process and on our people’s right to manage their affairs and serve their city with freedom and dignity.”
The council called on “all international, human rights and humanitarian institutions to assume their legal and moral responsibilities and pressure for his immediate release, and to put an end to these escalating violations against the city’s leaders and citizens”.
