Trump on killing of journalists by Israel: ‘I’m not happy about it’

When asked about the incident, the US president appeared to be unaware of the Israeli attack that killed 20 Palestinians, including five journalists, at Nasser Hospital in Gaza.

Pressed for comment, he said: “Well, I’m not happy about it. I don’t want to see it. At the same time, we have to end that whole nightmare.”

Trump then pivoted to talking about his efforts to release the remaining Israeli captives in Gaza.

Nasser Hospital bombing ‘horrifying atrocity’: Local US official

On the national level, hardly any US politician has addressed the Israeli attack on Nasser Hospital, which killed 21 Palestinians, including five journalists.

But some local officials are speaking out.

“Israel’s latest attack on Gaza is another horrifying atrocity – bombing a hospital, killing civilians and journalists, and then striking the rescue team sent to help the victims,” Sami Scheetz, a Democratic county supervisor in Iowa, said in a social media post.

“All of this is on top of a campaign of mass starvation against 2 million people after already killing over 20,000 children in the past two years.”

Trump predicts ‘conclusive ending’ to Gaza war within three weeks

The US president says the war in Gaza should end.

“I think within the next two to three weeks, you’re going to have pretty good, conclusive ending,” Trump told reporters.

The US leader has previously promised an end to the war, but his statements have not materialised. The Trump administration has supplied Israel with billions of dollars in weapons and rejected international efforts to recognise a Palestinian state.

“It’s got to get over with because between the hunger and all of the other problems – worse than hunger, death, pure death – people [are] being killed,” he said.

Earlier this year, Trump suggested removing all Palestinians from Gaza – a plan that would amount to ethnic cleansing, a crime against humanity.

Would that be before, after or together with ending the Ukrainian genocide? It's the always 3 weeks Trump deadline.

UN says ‘killing of Gaza journalists should shock the world’

The United Nations has issued a statement calling for “accountability and justice” after the killing of five journalists in an Israeli army attack on Nasser Hospital.

“The killing of journalists in Gaza should shock the world – not into stunned silence but into action, demanding accountability and justice,” UN rights office spokeswoman Ravina Shamdasani said in a statement.

“Journalists are not a target. Hospitals are not a target.”

Israel kills sixth Palestinian journalist

Israeli forces have killed Hassan Douhan, a journalist and academic who worked as a correspondent for Al-Hayat al-Jadida publication.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida reported that Douhan was killed by Israeli fire in Khan Younis, bringing the journalist death toll today to six.

In his final post on Facebook, Douhan paid tribute to the journalists killed earlier at Nasser Hospital.

“The martyrs of righteousness and conveying the truth, the word and the picture,” he wrote of the slain journalists. “The martyrs of national duty and journalism. To the eternal heavens, moons of the homeland and professional colleagues.”

MSF expresses outrage over Israel’s ‘impunity’

Doctors Without Borders, known by its French initials MSF, has denounced the “horrendous” Israeli attacks on Nasser Hospital.

Jerome Grimaud, MSF’s emergency coordinator in Gaza, underscored that journalist Mariam Abu Daqqa worked with the relief organisation.

“We are heartbroken by her death. Mariam leaves behind a son who must now grow up without his mother,” Grimaud said, adding that MSF staff members were forced to shelter in the laboratory of the hospital as Israel hit the building amid rescue efforts.

He expressed outrage at Israel’s continuing attacks on journalists and medical facilities “with impunity”. “As Israel continues to shun international law, the only witnesses of their genocidal campaign are deliberately being targeted. It must stop now.”

Israel is systematically killing witnesses to genocide: Journalist

Jeremy Scahill, co-founder of Drop Site News, says Gaza is enduring a “war of annihilation and extermination”.

“Israel is trying to systematically murder the witnesses to its genocidal actions, to the burning of children alive in tents, to the forced starvation of people and massive bombing of whole cities, razing them to the ground,” he told Al Jazeera from Zadar in Croatia.

Scahill said the “double tap” strike used by Israel to kill the journalists at Nasser Hospital was pioneered by the US during the infamous “war on terror” – when an initial drone strike would be followed by another attack to kill those trying to help the victims.

He said Western news organisations also contributed to “systematically dehumanising” Palestinians from the start of the war, and “serving as conveyor belts for the lies of an Israeli regime intent on wiping Palestinians off the map”.

British foreign secretary ‘horrified’ by Israeli attack on hospital

British Foreign Secretary David Lammy says he is “horrified” by Israel’s attack on Nasser Hospital that killed at least 20 people, including five journalists.

In a post on X, Lammy reiterated that “civilians, healthcare workers and journalists must be protected”.

“We need an immediate ceasefire,” he wrote.

Jeremy Corbyn slams UK government ‘complicity’ in Israeli abuses

The left-wing British politician has described Israel’s “double-tap” attack that killed 21 Palestinians at Nasser Hospital in Gaza to his 2.5 million followers on X.

“Israel bombed a hospital. Rescue workers and reporters rushed to recover the dead and the wounded. Israel bombed the hospital again. Live on TV,” Corbyn wrote.

“Read that again.”

He went on to denounce the UK’s support for Israel.

Although the government of Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced plans to recognise a Palestinian state, according to media reports, the UK has been flying spy planes over Gaza to help Israel with its military campaign.

“Our government’s legacy will be its complicity in crimes against humanity. End all arms sales to Israel, now,” Corbyn said.

Germany calls for investigation into attack on Nasser Hospital

Germany’s Foreign Ministry has called for an investigation into the recent attack on Nasser Hospital that killed five journalists.

In a statement on X, the ministry said the work of journalists was “indispensable for depicting the devastating reality” of the war in Gaza.

“We have repeatedly called on the Israeli government to grant access to media professionals and to provide protection to journalists operating in Gaza,” the ministry added.

In response, the German Ambassador to Israel, Steffen Seibert, wrote that it was “another day of deep sadness”.

“We are appalled at the killing of journalists, first responders and other civilians in an Israeli attack against Nasser Hospital. Our Foreign Ministry demands an investigation and access for international media to Gaza to show the reality of war,” he wrote.

RSF calls for accountability after Israel’s ‘massacre’ of journalists

Reporters Without Borders (RSF) has condemned Israel’s latest killing of journalists, which comes amid a string of assassinations, saying its information shows “all were deliberately targeted”.

“RSF is once again calling for an emergency UN Security Council meeting to end this massacre of journalists,” the organisation said in a statement.

RSF Director-General Thibaut Bruttin said the Israeli army is engaged in a “gradual effort to eliminate information coming from Gaza” in defiance of international humanitarian law.

Bruttin said the UN Security Council needs to ensure that “concrete measures are taken to end impunity for crimes against journalists, protect Palestinian journalists, and open access to the Gaza Strip to all reporters”.

‘Hunger and malnutrition among children are deepening’: UN

The UN humanitarian office (OCHA) is renewing calls for the unrestricted flow of aid into and within Gaza.

“With famine conditions now confirmed in Gaza governorate, hunger and malnutrition among children are deepening,” OCHA said.

“Partners working on nutrition note that in any food crisis, children with underlying health conditions are affected first – and without proper nutrition, water and care, their condition worsens more quickly.”

OIC urges increased efforts to stop Israel’s ‘continued crimes’

Hissein Brahim Taha, secretary-general for the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), calls for redoubled efforts to confront Israel’s “continued crimes” against Palestinians.

Taha condemned Israel’s plan to seize all of Gaza and Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu’s comments about pursuing expansionism under the vision of a “Greater Israel”.

“The international community is called upon to take concrete steps to break the blockade and allow the delivery of humanitarian aid,” Taha said at a summit of the OIC bloc, which includes 57 countries with large Muslim populations.

UN calls for accountability for killing of journalists in Gaza

Stephane Dujarric, spokesman for the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, says accountability over incidents like the killing of journalists in Gaza takes time, asserting that the United Nations chief does not have the authority to launch an international investigation without a proper legislative mandate.

“But there will need to be accountability. We once again call on Israel to cooperate with various mechanisms that exist and have been set up by different bodies to show they can be transparent,” Dujarric told reporters.

He highlighted that the UN Security Council’s Resolution 2222 calls for the protection of journalists and media facilities as parts of civilian infrastructure that need to be respected.

He said Guterres “will support any initiative that will help bring an end to the conflict and bring in humanitarian aid and see the release of all captives in Gaza”.

Dujarric also called on Israel to halt its expanding military offensive on Gaza as it plans to seize Gaza City.

“We’ve been very clear about the potential horrors that a new military assault on Gaza City could bring to the Palestinians who have sought safety there,” he said. “There is no safe place in Gaza.”

Saudi Arabia urges international community to put end to ‘Israeli crimes’

Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Ministry says it condemns Israel’s attack on medical personnel and journalists.

“The Ministry stresses the Kingdom’s rejection of Israel’s ongoing violations of international law and norms,” it said. “The Kingdom reiterates its call on the international community to put an end to these Israeli crimes and emphasizes the need to protect medical, relief, and media personnel.”

During a visit to Saudi Arabia in May, US President Donald Trump said it would be a “dream” to see the country establish formal diplomatic relations with Israel.

Riyadh has said it is committed to the 2002 Arab Peace Initiative, which conditions recognition of Israel on the establishment of a Palestinian state.

Countries condemn, UN and aid organizations call for accountability, nothing changes, the war crimes only keep getting worse. The international community does not exist. It's a lie meaning as much as 'United' does in the UN. Just a convenient way to absolve yourself from responsibility like Saudi Arabia here, you are part of the international 'community'.

Israel’s admission of ‘mistake’ can be investigated as war crime

British human rights lawyer Geoffrey Nice says Israel’s description of the attack on Nasser Hospital as a “mistake” is an “interesting admission” that means Israel should be investigated on what its army was trying to do.

“If they can’t then justify a mistake in terms of a proper target with assessed level of collateral damage, then they’ve committed a war crime,” Nice told Al Jazeera.

Don’t mourn the deaths of Palestinian journalists

Although the journalists killed today were protected civilians, although they were sheltering inside a medical facility that enjoys special protection under humanitarian law, no one will hold Israel accountable for what it claims was a “mistake”, and no one will investigate it.

This is what happened with the assassination of Anas al-Sharif, Mohammed Qreiqeh, Ibrahim Zaher, Mohammed Noufal, Moamen Aliwa, and Mohammed al-Khaldi two weeks ago, too. It was also gradually forgotten. Social media eulogies faded. Their killing, which was described as “unacceptable” and a “grave breach of international law”, is yet to be investigated, while Israel’s claims about Anas remain unchallenged.

Almost 23 months into this brutal war, and the whole world still only goes as far as offering condolences for dead Palestinians. It does everything it can to avert even the slightest feeling of responsibility for what is happening in Gaza.

If mourning Palestinian journalists allows you to feel less guilt, if it makes you feel as though you have fulfilled your duty towards them, then don’t mourn them. We do not need more eulogies; we need justice.

‘Shame on all journalists not raising their voice’: UN’s Albanese

Francesca Albanese, the United Nations rapporteur on the occupied Palestinian territories, says the camera of a journalist who was killed in Israel’s attack on Nasser Hospital “should be exhibited one day” in a memorial for the victims of the genocide in Gaza.

“Shame on all journalists not raising their voice against the massacre of their brave Palestinian colleagues while documenting the genocide,” Albanese wrote in a social media post.

Israeli forces targeting areas with civilians, journalists: UN expert

The UN special rapporteur on freedom of expression, Irene Khan, says journalists are being attacked in Gaza, whether they are being directly targeted or not.

“The casualties have been extremely high because of the very careless, reckless way in which the Israeli… forces have been carrying out this war,” Khan told Al Jazeera.

Khan said that after the first strike on Nasser Hospital, which killed one journalist, many other journalists rushed to the scene to take pictures and report on the attack, and then the second strike occurred.

“So this is, in a way, also targeting areas where there is disproportionate risk to civilians, including journalists,” Khan said.

Main events on August 25th

  • Since dawn, Israeli attacks across Gaza have killed at least 61 people, according to medical sources.
  • In southern Gaza, an Israeli attack on Nasser Hospital killed at least 21 people, including five journalists, receiving widespread global condemnation.
  • Al Jazeera’s cameraman, Mohammed Salama, was among the victims. The network accused Israel of waging a “systematic campaign to silence the truth”.
  • Israeli forces killed Palestinian correspondent Hassan Douhan in a separate incident in Khan Younis later today, bringing the death toll of journalists to six.
  • Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he “deeply regrets” what he called a “tragic mishap” at Nasser Hospital, as Israel continues to kill journalists with impunity.
  • US President Donald Trump said that within the next two to three weeks, we would have a “pretty good, conclusive ending” to the war in Gaza.
  • Hezbollah chief Naim Qassem said the Lebanese government’s decree to remove the group’s weapons was a grave mistake, calling for revoking the decision.

Norway’s soverign wealth fund divests from 5 Israeli banks, Caterpillar

Norway’s $2 trillion wealth fund, the world’s largest, has announced that it has divested from five Israeli banking groups, as well as the US construction equipment group Caterpillar Inc, on ethics grounds.

The five banks were excluded “due to an unacceptable risk that the companies contribute to serious violations of the rights of individuals in situations of war and conflict”, the fund said in a statement.

The fund’s ethics watchdog, the Council on Ethics, said: “There is no doubt that Caterpillar’s products are being used to commit extensive and systematic violations of international humanitarian law.”

Rights advocates have long called for boycotting Caterpillar due to the use of its equipment by the Israeli military, including to demolish Palestinian homes.

The council said that violations were taking place both in Gaza and the occupied West Bank.

“As deliveries of the relevant machinery to Israel are now set to resume, the Council considers there to be an unacceptable risk that Caterpillar is contributing to serious violations of individuals’ rights in war or conflict situations,” it added.

Israeli forces carry out raids, arrest 10 in West Bank villages

Israeli forces have carried out a familiar series of overnight and early-morning raids in the occupied West Bank, according to the Wafa news agency. During the operations, it reports, they:

  • stormed into numerous homes in Deir Abu Mishal village, near Ramallah, and arrested four people, including two 15-year-old boys;
  • stormed the Balata and al-Ein camps, as well as Balata village, near Nablus, and arrested six people;
  • brought military patrols into the city of Tubas;
  • stormed the village of Jorat al-Shamaa and raided a home, without making any arrests; and
  • stormed the city of Qalqilya and fired stun grenades, also without making any arrests.

Child among three Palestinians wounded in Israeli gunfire in occupied West Bank: Report

Israeli forces have stormed central Ramallah in the occupied West Bank and fired stun grenades as well as live shots towards people, according to the Wafa news agency. The shots wounded three people, including a 12-year-old child who was hit in the back, the agency reports.

It cites the Palestinian Red Crescent Society as saying its crew transferred the child to the hospital.

Tensions rise in Ramallah as Israeli raid escalates

An Israeli military raid in the occupied West Bank city of Ramallah appears to be escalating. Live footage from the city, carried by Al Jazeera, showed armed Israeli forces stationed on a building and near one of their military vehicles, amid explosive-like sounds in the background.

A crowd of Palestinians have gathered near where Israeli forces are positioned, some apparently throwing stones, the footage shows. At least one Palestinian man, apparently injured, is seen being taken away by an ambulance.

Ramallah raid part of ‘daily life of Palestinians’

Xavier Abu Eid, former communications director for the Palestine Liberation Organization, has said the tense raid in Ramallah has been ongoing for at least a few hours, with Israeli forces storming currency exchange shops in the city earlier.

The raid is happening in a very central area of Ramallah, home to three major schools and a market, Abu Eid told Al Jazeera from the city. “This is part of the daily life of Palestinians,” he added, noting that Israel is conducting a show of force to remind residents “who is actually ruling here”.

Israeli raid in occupied West Bank injures 24 Palestinians

At least 24 Palestinians have been wounded by Israeli gunfire during a raid on Ramallah and el-Bireh in the occupied West Bank, according to the Palestinian Red Crescent Society (PRCS).

Injuries resulted from the forces firing live bullets, rubber bullets, and tear gas, the report said. Among those injured is a 71-year-old man hit by rubber bullets and a 12-year-old child shot in the back near the local market, Wafa said.

The PRCS said its medical crews were repeatedly obstructed from reaching the wounded, with Israeli forces firing “warning shots” at ambulances.

Al Jazeera sources said Israeli forces stormed the governorate for several hours before pulling out, raiding a money exchange office in central Ramallah and el-Bireh, confiscating its contents and arresting several employees.

CCTV footage released by Gaza’s Government Communication Center showed Israeli soldiers throwing a smoke grenade into a hair salon in Ramallah, where civilians had taken shelter.

Al Jazeera sources said that Israeli forces deployed snipers on rooftops and brought in additional reinforcements during the raid. Separate reports said the army also stormed Hebron, closing off the area around the health roundabout in the city centre.

Israeli raid in Ramallah aims to weaken image of Palestinian Authority

Paris-based political journalist Faten Elwan says the ongoing Israeli raid in Ramallah appears to be more a show of force over the occupied West Bank rather than a targeted military operation.

“Israel is sending a clear message that Oslo is dead, that the Palestinian Authority is dead, and that there is no power on the ground but the Israeli forces and the settlers that now act as a shadow government for the vision of the Israeli army,” she told Al Jazeera.

“Definitely when they [Israeli forces] go into Ramallah, the political capital of the Palestinians, a few blocks away from the presidential office, it’s a clear message that ‘I can come in in broad daylight and show who has the power on the ground,'” she added.

“That also sends a message to the Palestinian people and weakens the image of the Palestinian Authority more and more.”

Violent West Bank raids part of ‘collective punishment of Palestinian people’

Israel’s latest military operation in Ramallah shows its war is not just with Hamas or Gaza but with “all the Palestinian people”, says Adel Abdel Ghafar, senior fellow at the Middle East Council on Global Affairs.

“We’ve seen increasing incursions of the Israeli military into the West Bank. We’ve seen the demolition of homes. We’ve seen demolition of properties,” he told Al Jazeera.

“This is all part and parcel of the collective punishment of the Palestinian people in the West Bank,” Abdel Ghaffar said, adding that part of the goal is to “financially strangle” people in the territory.

Because the Palestinian Authority (PA) is unable to respond effectively, Israel carries out its operations “with impunity across the West Bank”, said Abdel Ghafar.

“Unfortunately, the PA is really an authority in name. It doesn’t really fully control the West Bank, and really the West Bank is under Israeli occupation and has been since 1967,” he added.

And this is what Netanyahu has in mind for Gaza as well when he says the PA should take over the government there.

33 Palestinians injured in Israel’s Ramallah raid: Health Ministry

The number of people injured in the Israeli military raid in Ramallah and nearby el-Bireh in the occupied West Bank has risen to 33, the Palestinian Health Ministry says.

As we reported earlier, one of those injured is a child who was hit by live fire. The ministry says the 13-year-old is undergoing surgery after being injured in the abdomen.

Israeli destruction in southern Lebanon ‘must be investigated as war crimes’: Amnesty

The Israeli military’s extensive and deliberate destruction of civilian property and farmland in southern Lebanon must be investigated as a war crime, global rights group Amnesty International has said.

It comes after the group released a new report, Nowhere To Return: Israel’s Extensive Destruction of Southern Lebanon, which documents how Israeli forces used explosives and bulldozers to devastate homes, mosques, cemeteries, roads, parks and sports grounds across 24 municipalities.

Amnesty said more than 10,000 structures were heavily damaged or destroyed between the start of Israel’s ground invasion on October 1, 2024 and January 26, 2025. Much of the destruction took place after November 27, when a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hezbollah went into effect.

“The Israeli military’s destruction of civilian homes, property and land in southern Lebanon rendered entire areas uninhabitable and ruined countless lives,” said Erika Guevara Rosas, Amnesty’s senior director for research, advocacy, policy and campaigns.

“Their blatant disregard for the communities they have destroyed is abhorrent. Where these acts of destruction were committed intentionally or recklessly, they must be investigated as war crimes.”

Australia’s top diplomat says Israeli attack on Nasser Hospital ‘horrific’

Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong has called on Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to agree to a ceasefire in a statement released after Israel’s deadly attack on Nasser Hospital on Monday.

“What we’ve seen overnight with the attack on a hospital is horrific, and what we would say to Prime Minister Netanyahu is you should heed the call of the world and agree to a ceasefire,” the minister said in a statement, according to the ABC broadcaster.

“You should take the advice of your own military and agree to a ceasefire. This war must stop,” Wong added.

China condemns Israeli strike on Gaza hospital that killed 21 including 5 journalists

“We are shocked and condemn the fact that medical personnel and journalists have once again unfortunately lost their lives in the conflict,” China Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun told reporters. “We express our condolences to the victims and our sympathies to their families.”

“Israel should immediately stop its military operations in Gaza, achieve a comprehensive and lasting ceasefire as soon as possible, fully restore the entry of humanitarian supplies, prevent a larger-scale humanitarian crisis, and work to ease tensions as quickly as possible,” Guo added.

US risks liability for war crimes in Gaza: HRW

Human Rights Watch (HRW) has warned that US military and intelligence personnel assisting Israeli forces in Gaza could face legal responsibility for war crimes.

The group said Washington’s involvement in operations, including providing intelligence for Israeli attacks and conducting planning with Israeli forces, has made the United States a party to the conflict since October 2023.

“The direct US participation in military operations with Israeli forces means that as a matter of international law, the United States has been and currently is a party to the armed conflict in Gaza,” said Sarah Yager, HRW’s Washington director. “US military and intelligence personnel and contractors assisting Israeli forces who commit war crimes may at some point find themselves facing criminal prosecution for atrocities in Gaza.”

US officials have acknowledged supplying Israel with actionable intelligence for strikes and extensive coordination in targeting Hamas leaders. The Trump administration has also increased support, approving the release of 2,000lb bombs that had previously been withheld by President Joe Biden.

“International law holds a country legally complicit when it knowingly assists another nation to commit serious laws-of-war violations and other abuses,” Yager added.
