Forums - Gaming - Let's Discuss! Top 10 gaming franchise of all time

I'm surprised people think sonic is top 10. It had its 15 minutes of fame back on the genesis but has been niche ever sense.  Metroid should be on the list before Sonic.  Metroid is still relevant and inspired an entire "metroidvania" genre.

Zelda has constantly been selling numerous big hits for 40 years now where as these mobile games have been available for about 5-10 years at best. Going by sales and influence, at least half the entire top 10 would be Nintendo games.

Pokémon must be in any top 10 lost.

True if we only compare Skyrim to BotW/TotK and the copies sold. But did you consider the price difference? You can get Skyrim for much cheaper than Botw and Totk. If we also look at the franchise as a whole, Zelda has about 140 million copies sold, Elder Scrolls about 90 million being optimistic. I agree Zelda wasn't mainstream until BotW, but I think you're underestimating the numbers a little bit. It had multiple entries that passed the 5 million mark.

Yeah Assassin's Creed and the Sims have respectful numbers, but I wouldn't consider them Top 10. I might as well put the Mii series if I were to put them on the list.

True. Of course, Switch cartridges are also more expensive to manufacture than Blu-Rays by an unknown but significant amount (given multiplatform game prices and NAND shortages that lasted all the way to 2022).

Anyway, since Zenimax was privately owned there's no way to estimate how much ES was making. The Zenimax purchase is widely believed to have been a steal, but we can't speculate much beyond that.

Also, I see your Mii series and raise a Candy Crush to meet it:

The interval between replies probably messed things up, but you're right. Fundamentally, getting the most accurate data is impossible for us to make this list. That's why I made it clear I was open to discuss as these are merely opinion based that uses data that relies on the vague official reports and evaluations online. When comparing Elder Scrolls and Zelda, my viewpoint was that Zelda most likely ranks above ES in everyway possible. Zelda as a franchise sold more copies according to multiple research, most likely generated more revenue, sold more merch, better global appeal, better status quo, longer history, and both impacted the industry.

Your counterclaim is probably saying that franchises like Assassin's Creed, the Sims, Mii, Candy Crush sold better and was most likely played by more people! True, franchise total wise they all sold more than Zelda and Elder Scrolls, but all of them loses in other aspects such as their status quo, history, impact, etc. All of these are from my judgement, but I can give details as to why and maybe there's some discussion to be made. That was my purpose of this forum.

Overall, I think Zelda is a much more balanced and powerful IP so that's why I put it in the Top 10 above others

Looks like everyone forgot that Gran Turismo was Playstation's best or tied-best selling games for two consecutive generations (3rd party games included). The genre isn't as relevant as it was (well... truth be told, the genre was never that big, GT was an outlier), but overall the series deserves a honorable mention and has sustained its popularity better than something like Halo despite the latter's genre being a lot more popular. GT5 also ended up selling about 12 million (18 counting Prologue) which was massive per PS3 standards.

To say nothing of the impact the series had on car culture and JDM.
