Switch vs DS Sales Comparison in Japan - May 2023

This monthly series compares the aligned Japanese sales of the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo DS.

The DS launched in December 2004 in Japan and the Nintendo Switch launched in March 2017. Therefore, the normal holiday periods and the Japanese Golden Week holiday for the two consoles do not lineup.

Switch Vs. DS Japan:

Gap change in latest month: 252,906 - Switch

Gap change over last 12 months: 1,751,635 - Switch

May 2023 is the 75th month that the Nintendo Switch has been available for in Japan. During the latest month, the Switch has outsold the DS by 252,906 units when you align the launches.

In the last 12 months, the Switch has outsold the DS by 1.75 million units. The DS is currently ahead of the Switch by 3.20 million units.

The 75th month for the Switch is May 2023, while for the DS it is February 2011. The Switch has sold 29.33 million units, while the DS sold 32.54 million units during the same timeframe. The DS sold current Switch sales in month 61.

The DS has sold 32.99 million units lifetime in Japan. The Switch is currently 3.66 million units behind the lifetime sales of the DS.

What I find interesting is that there are even less people in Japan today than there was when the Nintendo DS was still going. Yet, the Switch still seems poised to take the crown from the DS.

PS5 vs PS4 Sales Comparison in Japan - May 2023

This monthly series compares the aligned Japanese sales of the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4.

The PlayStation 5 launched in November 2020 in Japan, while the PlayStation 4 launched in February 2014. This does mean the holiday periods for the two consoles do not lineup.

PS5 Vs. PS4 Japan:

Gap change in latest month: 95,011 - PS5

Gap change over last 12 months: 504,351 - PS5

Total Lead: 491,056 - PS5

PlayStation 5 Total Sales: 3,588,905

PlayStation 4 Total Sales: 3,097,849

May 2023 is the 31st month the PlayStation 5 has been available for. In the latest month, the gap grew in favor of the PlayStation 5 when compared to the aligned launch of the PlayStation 4 by 95,011 units.

In the last 12 months, the PS5 has outsold the PS4 by 504,351 units. The PS5 is currently ahead by 491.056 units.

The 31st month for the PS5 in Japan is May 2023, while for the PS4 it is August 2016. The PS5 has sold 3.59 million units, while the PS4 sold 3.10 million units during the same timeframe. The PS4 sold current PS5 sales in month 34.

The PS4 crossed 4 million in Japan in month 35, 5 million in month 41, and 6 million in month 47. The PS4 has sold 9.62 million units to date. The PS5 is currently 6.03 million units behind the lifetime sales of the PS4 in Japan.

Xbox Series X|S vs Xbox 360 Sales Comparison in Japan - May 2023

This monthly series compares the aligned sales of the Xbox Series X|S and Xbox 360 in Japan, as well as looking at lifetime original Xbox sales and Xbox One sales.

The Xbox Series X|S launched in Japan in November 2020, while the Xbox 360 launched in Japan in December 2005. The original Xbox launched in Japan in February 2002 and the Xbox One in September 2014.

XSX|S Vs. X360 Japan:

Gap change in latest month: 13,824 - X360

Gap change over last 12 months: 9,915 - XSX|S

Total Lead: 184,827 - X360

Xbox Series X|S Total Sales: 441,918

Xbox 360 Total Sales: 626,745

May 2023 is the 31st month the Xbox Series X|S has been available for in Japan. In the latest month, the gap grew in favor of the Xbox 360 when compared to the aligned launch of the Xbox Series X|S by 13,824 units.

In the last 12 months, the Xbox Series X|S has caught up to the Xbox 360 by 9,915 units. The Xbox 360 is currently ahead by 184,827 units.

The Xbox Series X|S has sold 441,918 units in 30 months, while the Xbox 360 sold 626,745 units. Month 30 for the Xbox Series X|S is May 2023 and for the Xbox 360 is June 2008.

The Xbox 360 crossed one million units in month 40 and 1.5 million units in month 67. The Xbox 360 sold 1.66 million units lifetime. The Xbox Series X|S is 1.22 million units behind lifetime Xbox 360 sales.

DS dominated but still had to compete against the PSP.

Don't be surprised if Switch ends up above 35 million, its all up to Nintendo at this point.

PS5 vs PS4 Sales Comparison in Europe - May 2023

This monthly series compares the aligned Europe sales of the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4.

The PlayStation 5 launched in November 2020, while the PlayStation 4 launched in November 2013. This does mean the holiday periods for the two consoles do lineup.

PS5 Vs. PS4 Europe:

Gap change in latest month: 10,855 - PS4

Gap change over last 12 months: 2,159,971 - PS4

Total Lead: 5,051,203 - PS4

PlayStation 5 Total Sales: 11,681,176

PlayStation 4 Total Sales: 16,732,379

May 2023 is the 31st month the PlayStation 5 has been available for. In the latest month, the gap grew in favor of the PlayStation 4 when compared to the aligned launch of the PlayStation 5 by 10,855 units.

In the last 12 months, the PS4 has outsold the PS5 by 2.16 million units. The PS5 is currently behind the PS4 by 5.05 million units.

The PS5 has sold 11.68 million units in 31 months, while the PS4 sold 16.73 million units. Month 31 for the PS5 is May 2023 and for the PS4 is May 2016.

The PS4 crossed 20 million units sold in Europe in month 37, 30 million in month 51, and 40 million in month 72. The PS4 has sold 45.84 million units to date in Europe. The PS5 is 34.16 million units behind lifetime PS4 sales in Europe.

Switch vs Wii Sales Comparison in Europe - May 2023

This monthly series compares the aligned European sales of the Nintendo Switch and the Nintendo Wii.

The Wii launched in Europe in December 2006, while the Nintendo Switch launched in March 2017. Therefore, the holiday periods for the two consoles do not lineup, which is why there are big increases and decreases.

Switch Vs. Wii Europe:

Gap change over last 12 months: 3,593,355 - Switch

Wii Total Sales: 32,240,730

May 2023 is the 75th month that the Nintendo Switch has been available for in Europe. During the latest month, the Switch outsold the Wii by 322,596 units.

In the last 12 months, the Switch has outsold the Wii by 3.59 million units. The Switch is currently ahead of the Wii by 60,377 units.

The 75th month for the Nintendo Switch is May 2023 and for the Wii it is February 2013. The Switch has sold 32.30 million units, while the Wii sold 32.24 million units during the same timeframe. The Wii sold current Switch sales in month 77.

The Wii sold 33.12 million units in Europe during its lifetime. The Switch needs to sell another 0.82 million units to outsell the Wii in Europe.

Well, this is it; with this month's numbers, Switch will finally have surpassed the Wii in Europe after a long, long chase. Crazy to think it was once tracking 7 million behind. Really goes to show the value of long legs.

After this it will be only NA left before Switch's victory is complete.

The DS launched in November 2004 in North America, December 2004 in Japan, and March 2005 in Europe, while the Nintendo Switch launched worldwide in March 2017. Therefore, the holiday periods for the two consoles do not lineup, which is why there are big increases and decreases.

Switch Vs. DS Global:

Gap change over last 12 months: 1,325,329 - DS

Total Lead: 15,045,465 - DS

Switch Total Sales: 126,512,699

DS Total Sales: 141,558,164

May 2023 is the 75th month that the Nintendo Switch has been available for. During the latest month, the gap grew in favor of the Switch by 0.42 million units when compared to the DS during the same timeframe.

In the last 12 months, the DS has outsold the Switch by 1.33 million units. The DS is ahead of the Switch by 15.05 million units.

The 75th month on sale for the Nintendo Switch is May 2023, while for the DS it is January 2011. The Switch has sold 126.51 million units, while the DS sold 141.56 million units during the same timeframe.

The Nintendo DS sold 154.02 million units lifetime. The Nintendo Switch is currently 27.51 million units behind the lifetime sales of the DS.
